The extraction of Bi(III) in nitrate media has been investigated using aminododecyldimethylenediphosphonic acid, ADDMDPA, which was previously synthesized and characterized. The extraction of the cation was carried out in different media with the addition of CH3COONa, KNO3 and HNO3. The maximum extraction yield for Bismuth is 70% after addition of 0.01 M of potassium nitrate at pHi = 2.9, in one step.

A numerical study of the parameters controlling the viscous penalty method is investigated to better set up Particle-Resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (PR-DNS) of particulate flows. Based on this analysis, improvements of the methods are proposed in order to reach an almost second order convergence in space. The viscous penalty method is validated in Stokes regime by simulating a uniform flow past a fixed isolated cylinder. Moreover, it is also utilized in moderate Reynolds number regime for a uniform flow past a square configuration of cylinder and compared in terms of friction factor to the well-known Ergun correlation.

Adsorption of Congo Red from Aqueous Solution Using CTAB-Kaolin from Bechar Algeria

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-modified kaolin (CTAB-kaolin or KC) was prepared and tested as an adsorbent for an anionic dye Congo red (CR) removal from aqueous solution in comparison with natural kaolin (K). The effect of various experimental parameters was investigated using a batch adsorption technique. In this manner, the adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics of CR on K and KC were examined. The isothermal data could be well described by the Langmuir equation and the dynamical data fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of modified kaolin KC (24.46 mg/g) was found to be around 4 times higher than that of natural kaolin K (5.94 mg/g). The KC demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity by removing over 98% of CR after ten minutes of contact. These results indicate that CTAB-kaolin could be employed as low-cost alternative to activated carbon in wastewater treatment for the removal of colour which comes from industrial effluents of textile activities, tanning or printing.

Removal of Zn (II) from Aqueous Solution onto Kaolin by Batch Design

The Algerian kaolin clay was investigated to remove Zn(II) heavy metal ion from aqueous solution. The effect of contact time, initial metal ion concentration, pH and temperature was experimentally studied in batch mode to evaluate the adsorption capacity, kinetic, thermodynamic and equilibrium. The extent of zinc adsorption increased with increasing initial concentration of adsorbat, pH and temperature. The linear Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied to describe equilibrium isotherms and both models fitted well. The monolayer adsorption capacity for Zn(II) ions was 12.23 mg per g of kaolin clay at pH 6.1 and 25°C. Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm model was also applied to the equilibrium data. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of Zn(II) onto kaolin clay was spontaneous and endothermic process in nature. Furthermore, the Lagergren-first-order and pseudo-second-order models were used to describe the kinetic data. The experimental data fitted well the pseudo-second-order kinetic. As a result, the kaolin clay may be used for removal of zinc from aqueous media.

Patellofemoral Outcome after Medial Unicompartmental Knee Replacement: A Retrospective Study of 25 Cases

Introduction: Osteoarthritis and impingement, in patellofemoral compartment after partial arthroplasty, have been rarely reported. The purpose of our study was to evaluate outcome at long-term follow-up. Methods: We have reviewed retrospectively twenty-five unicompartmental arthroplasties. The medial parapatellar approach was used in all cases. Patients have been evaluated with regard to patellar impingement and osteoarthritic changes revealed by radiographs. The mean follow-up was 10.4 years. The clinical scoring system of the Knee Society and specific questions regarding patellofemoral symptoms were used for functional outcome. Patellofemoral complications such as osteoarthritis, impingement and the position of the femoral component were diagnosed on X-ray views of the knee. Results: At the final follow-up, fifteen knees revealed lateral patellofemoral osteoarthritis and four knees had patellofemoral impingement. Excepted of two cases, all knees with patella impingement did not revealed degenerative modifications. Anterior pain of the knee was noted more frequently in knees with patellar complications. Patellar impingement was considered the first cause of knee pain, more than knees with degenerative modifications. Only one revision surgery was indicated in front of patellofemoral conflict. The occurrence of patellar impingement depends on the surgical procedure. The anterior position of the femoral component seems to increase the frequency of such complication. Conclusion: Several degenerative modifications may occur in the patello-femoral compartment following partial knee arthroplasty. Patellar impingement and total knee arthritis are the most reported modifications. Functional outcome may be affected progressively when these changes become obvious. Patellar impingement is the major cause of knee pain and needs revision.

Purpose: Shoulder replacement becomes more indicated in complex fractures of the humeral head. Indications depend on some factors especially age and fracture’s pattern. The aim of our study is to compare the functional results of both reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) and hemi-arthroplasty (HA) in complex proximal humerus fractures. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two shoulder arthroplasties (20 reverse shoulder arthroplasties, 38 hemiarthroplasties), were reviewed retrospectively, between January 2010, and December, 2015. Preoperative, operative, and postoperative evaluations were achieved based on medical observations. At last follow-up, functional outcomes were established according Constant-Murley Score and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score. Complications rates were well-defined and compared between the study groups. Results: The mean of follow-up was 41.5 months. Comparing the study groups, reverse shoulder arthrosplasties were significantly older (mean age: 76.3 versus 66). These fractures occur more in women (70% versus 57%). At last follow-up, functional outcomes were better in reverse shoulder arthroplasty group (Constant-Murley Score 76 versus 59;ASES score 56 versus 41). The mean anterior elevation and external rotation were better in reverse shoulder arthroplasty respectively (110°versus 88°;28° versus 19°). Revision was more required in hemiarthroplasty group than reverse shoulder arthroplasty group. Conclusion: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty seems to improve functional outcome at intermediate and long-term of follow-up of proximal complex humeral fractures on comparison to hemiarthroplasty.

Tuberculosis Arthritis of the Sternoclavicular Joint

Tuberculosis remains a public health problem in developing country particularly in Tunisia. Bone location of tuberculosis infection is increasing and is often misdiagnosed due to the weakness of clinical presentation in early stages. Sternoclavicular joint tuberculosis is rare and unusual location of this disease. However, antibiotherapy and surgical debridement is still the basis of treatment. We report a case of sternoclavicular joint tuberculosis with a follow up of four years. The patient was treated surgically and put under antibiotherapy during twelve months. The site was sterilized. We report this case to show that debridement and antibiotherapy still efficient in tuberculous bone affection no matters the location.

Neonatal anthropometric data is an important reflection of the growth and fetal development. Objective: Knowing the anthropometric standards of Moroccan newborns according to sex, gestational age, parity, age and corpulence of women. Materials and Methods: Prospective and cross-sectional study. The information forward newborns alive, healthy, Moroccan parents, from normal pregnancies, born in Rabat Souissi’s maternity between January 2008 and December 2013, was gathered. Results: 5000 births were recruited. The ratio was balanced. Anthropometric standards identified according to gestational age and gender were lower than the Frenchs (AUDIPOG) and Tunisians. With our curves, we determined new thresholds for SGA and macrosomia. Factors influencing fetal growth, it was verified, in addition to sex and gestational age of the newborn, age, parity and maternal body mass index (BMI), that have proven determinants of fetal growth in our context. Conclusion: The curves of birth weight, height and head circumference of Moroccan newborns recruited have determined a new thresholds for hypotrophy and macrosomia.
