Spatial pattern of landscape changes and consequence changes in species diversity between 1956-1999 of Pinus halepensis Miller plantations in Montes de Malaga State Park (Andalusia, Spain)

Changes in forest diversity and the transforma- tion of coniferous plantations into more natural woodlands are of special interest in the Medi- terranean. The aim of this study was to investi- gate changes in land use patterns and vegeta- tion cover from 1956 to 1999 in Pinus halepensis Miller plantations in Montes de Málaga State Park in southern Spain. At the landscape level, a FRAGSTAT analysis was performed using aerial photographs. At the community level, a total of 47 sample plots were analyzed. Field measure- ments indicated the presence of a total of 70 species in the different vegetation types sam- pled. Shannon-Wiener (H), and Simpson’s (D) diversity indices showed the greatest species richness in Aleppo pine plantations (H = 1.54 ± 0.2;D = 3.88 ± 0.6), while Holm oak stands in the forested areas (H = 1.37 ± 0.1;D = 3.35 ± 0.6) and agricultural land (H = 1.33 ± 0.01;D = 2.80 ± 0.03) had lower values. FRAGSTATS analyses at land- scape and community levels indicated increases in patch richness, patch number, and percent of landscape mainly for pine plantations, Holm oak forests and shrub habitats. Replacement of agri- culture by conifer plantations led to the homo- genization of landscape structure. This change has modified the landscape by facilitating the recovery of indigenous tree species including Holm oak, which will likely lead to the future establishment of native forests in this area. Our findings suggest that pine plantations could fa- vour woody species diversity by increasing abundance and species richness in contrast to the situation in non-forested agricultural land.

Background Proteome characterization of the porcine endometrium and extraembryonic membranes is important to understand mother-embryo cross-communication.In this study,the proteome of the endometrium and cho-rioallantoic membrane was characterized in pregnant sows(PS)during early gestation(d 18 and 24 of gestation)and in the endometrium of non-pregnant sows(NPS)during the same days using LC-MS/MS analysis.The UniProtKB database and ClueGO were used to obtain functional Gene Ontology annotations and biological and functional networks,respectively.Results Our analysis yielded 3,254 and 3,457 proteins identified in the endometrium of PS and NPS,respectively;of these,1,753 being common while 1,501 and 1,704 were exclusive to PS and NPS,respectively.In addition,we iden-tified 3,968 proteins in the extraembryonic membranes of PS.Further analyses of function revealed some proteins had relevance for the immune system process and biological adhesion in endometrium while the embryonic chorion displayed abundance of proteins related to cell adhesion and cytoskeletal organization,suggesting they dominated the moment of endometrial remodeling,implantation and adhesion of the lining epithelia.Data are available via Pro-teomeXchange with identifier PXD042565.Conclusion This is the first in-depth proteomic characterization of the endometrium and extraembryonic mem-branes during weeks 3 to 4 of gestation;data that contribute to the molecular understanding of the dynamic environ-ment during this critical period,associated with the majority of pregnancy losses.

Present and future of new systemic therapies for early and intermediate stages of hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a high mortality neoplasm which usually appears on a cirrhotic liver.The therapeutic arsenal and subsequent prognostic outlook are intrinsically linked to the HCC stage at diagnosis.Notwithstanding the current deployment of treatments with curative intent(liver resection/local ablation and liver transplantation)in early and intermediate stages,a high rate of HCC recurrence persists,underscoring a pivotal clinical challenge.Emergent systemic therapies(ST),particularly immunotherapy,have demonstrate promising outcomes in terms of increase overall survival,but they are currently bound to the advanced stage of HCC.This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the literature,encompassing studies up to March 10,2024,evaluating the impact of novel ST in the early and intermediate HCC stages,specially focusing on the findings of neoadjuvant and adjuvant regimens,aimed at increasing significantly overall survival and recurrence-free survival after a treatment with curative intent.We also investigate the potential role of ST in enhancing the downstaging rate for the intermediate-stage HCC initially deemed ineligible for treatment with curative intent.Finally,we critically discuss about the current relevance of the results of these studies and the encouraging future implications of ST in the treatment schedules of early and intermediate HCC stages.

Shop&Go:TSP heuristics for an optimal shopping with smartphones

Mobile technology has been under constant growth in last years.The emergence of smartphones has encouraged the development of a wide variety of mobile applications.Some of them are related to daily tasks.In this regard,we propose the Shop&Go mobile application which allows a supermarket customer to do the shopping covering the shortest distance1).An analysis of the routing problem applied to an efcient way of doing the shopping is made.A map with items distribution and distances between products is provided by the supermarket.Based on these information two heuristics have been proposed to do the shopping following the optimum path.Both heuristics have been compared,proving that neither of them can be defned as the best one in all cases.The products in the shopping list determine which is the best solution for each case.Therefore,both algorithms have been included in our application,letting the user decide which route he/she wants to follow.Shop&Go has also other functionalities which are extensively described in the paper.Simulations over an HTC Desire mobile are shown to demonstrate the proper tool operation.Finally,a study of consumer acceptance has been made to know its possibilities of success in the mobile technology market.

Use of ionizing radiation during cardiac catheterization interventions adversely impacts both the patients and medical staff.In recent years,radiation dose in cardiac catheterization interventions has become a topic of increasing interest in interventional cardiology and there is a strong interest in reducing radiation exposure during the procedures.This review presents the current status of radiation protection in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and summarizes a practical approach for radiation dose management for minimizing radiation exposure.This review also presents recent innovations that have clinical potential for reducing radiation during cardiac interventions.

Recovery of carbon monoxide from flue gases by reactive absorption in ionic liquid imidazolium chlorocuprate(I): Mass transfer coefficients

Recovery of carbon monoxide from flue gases by selective absorption of carbon monoxide in an imidazolium chlorocuprate(I) ionic liquid is considered in this work as an alternative to the use of molecular volatile solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons. The present work evaluates the CO mass transfer rates from the gas phase to the ionic liquid solutions in the absence of chemical reaction. To that end, carbon dioxide was employed as an inert model gas and absorption experiments were performed to assess the influence of different process variables in a batch reactor with flat gas–liquid interface. The experimental mass transfer coefficients showed significant variation with temperature,(3.4–10.9) × 10-7m·s-1between 293 and 313 K; stirring speed,(10.2–33.1) × 10-7m·s-1between 100 and 300 r·min-1; and concentration of copper(I),(6.6–10.2) × 10-7m·s-1between 0.25 and 2 mol·L-1. In addition, the mass transfer coefficients were eventually found to follow a potential proportionality of the type kL∝μ-0.5and the dimensionless correlation that makes the estimation of the mass transfer coefficients possible in the studied range of process variables was obtained: Sh = 10-2.64· Re1.07·Sc0.75.These results constitute the first step in the kinetic analysis of the reaction between CO and imidazolium chlorocuprate(I) ionic liquid that determines the design of the separation units.

Effects on physiologic measures of appetite from intragastric balloon and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty: results of a prospective study

Background: Endoscopic bariatric therapies can help address widening management gaps in obesity. Their ability to facilitate weight loss is largely tied to influences on appetite through perturbations of gastric emptying and accommodation. As these tools gain traction in obesity therapy, their physiologic underpinnings require exploration, which may enhance efficacy, tolerance, and patient-tailored care.Methods: We prospectively assessed consecutive subjects with fluid-filled intragastric balloons (IGBs) (n = 18) placed between October 2016 and June 2017 or underwent endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) (n = 23) from March 2018 to June 2018. Patients underwent physiologic appraisal at 3 months with13C-spirulina-based gastric emptying breath test to determine time to half emptying (T50), as well as maximum tolerated volume (MTV) of a standard nutrient drink test. Changes in T50 and MTV at 3 months were compared with percent total body weight loss (%TBWL) at 3 and 6 months using best-fit linear regression.Results: The change in T50 at 3 months correlated with %TBWL at 3 months for IGB (P = 0.01) and ESG (P = 0.01) but with greater impact on %TBWL in IGB compared to ESG (R2 = 0.42vs. 0.26). Change in T50 at 3 months was predictive of weight loss at 6 months for IGB (P = 0.01) but not ESG (P = 0.11). ESG was associated with greater decrease in MTV compared to IGB (340.25 ± 297.97 mLvs. 183.00 ± 217.13 mL,P = 0.08), indicting an enhanced effect on satiation through decreased gastric accommodation. Changes in MTV at 3 months did not correlate with %TBWL for either IGB (P = 0.26) or ESG (P = 0.49) but trended toward significance for predicting %TBWL at 6 months for ESG (P = 0.06) but not IGB (P = 0.19).Conclusion: IGB and ESG both induce weight loss but likely through distinct gastric motor function phenotypes, and gastric emptying may predict future weight loss in patients with IGB.

Plant survival depends on seed germination,progression through post-germinative developmental checkpoints,and adaptation to abiotic stresses.All these processes underlie a tightly controlled regulation by the stress hormone abscisic acid(ABA)at different levels,even though the main research focuses on changes in transcript and protein abundance.Nevertheless,protein fate undergoes complex readjustments that allow signal transduction to be integrated into physiological responses.Among them,protein redox status,stability,capacity of oligomerization,formation of complexes,and subcellular compartmentalization become key points for plant reprogramming against stresses to acquire an optimal development.In this Spotlight,we highlight and discuss the latest advances in dissecting the mechanisms driving protein dynamics of nucleocytoplasmic trafficking in the cell and its relevance for regulating the stability of ABI5 and the ABI5-dependent AB A signaling pathway(Figure 1).

Extreme preterm infants(60%)and lower(<30%)initial FiO_(2).Recent evidence and meta-analyses have underscored the predictive value for survival and/or relevant clinical outcomes of the Apgar score and the achievement of arterial oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry≥85%at 5 minutes after birth.New clinical trials comparing higher versus lower initial FiO_(2)have been launched aiming to optimize postnatal stabilization of extreme preterm while avoiding adverse effects of hypoxemia or hyperoxemia.

Three-dimensional trees for virtual globes

One of the problems in virtual globes technologies is the real-time representation of vegetal species.In forest or garden representations,the low detailed plants produce a lack of realism.Efficient techniques are required to achieve accurate interactive visualisation due to the great number of polygons the vegetal species have.This article presents a multi-resolution model based on a geometric representation of vegetal species that allows the application to perform the progressive transmission of the model,that is,the transmission of a simple representation followed by successive refinements of it.It has a hardware-oriented design in order to obtain interactive frame rates.The geometric data of the objects are stored in the graphics processing unit and,moreover,the change from one approximation to another is obtained by performing mathematical calcula-tions in this graphics hardware.The multi-resolution model presented here enables instancing:as many vegetal species as desired can be rendered with different levels of detail,while all of them are accessing the same geometric data.This model has been used to build a real-time representation of a not imaginary scenario.
