Background:Forests perform various important ecosystem functions that contribute to ecosystem services.In many parts of the world,forest management has shifted from a focus on timber production to multi-purpose forestry,combining timber production with the supply of other forest ecosystem services.However,it is unclear which forest types provide which ecosystem services and to what extent forests primarily managed for timber already supply multiple ecosystem services.Based on a comprehensive dataset collected across 150 forest plots in three regions differing in management intensity and species composition,we develop models to predict the potential supply of 13 ecosystem services.We use those models to assess the level of multifunctionality of managed forests at the national level using national forest inventory data.Results:Looking at the potential supply of ecosystem services,we found trade-offs(e.***.between both bark beetle control or dung decomposition and both productivity or soil carbon stocks)as well as synergies(e.***.for temperature regulation,carbon storage and culturally interesting plants)across the 53 most dominant forest types in Germany.No single forest type provided all ecosystem services equally.Some ecosystem services showed comparable levels across forest types(e.***.decomposition or richness of saprotrophs),while others varied strongly,depending on forest structural attributes(e.***.phosphorous availability or cover of edible plants)or tree species composition(e.***.potential nitrification activity).Variability in potential supply of ecosystem services was only to a lesser extent driven by environmental conditions.However,the geographic variation in ecosystem function supply across Germany was closely linked with the distribution of main tree species.Conclusions:Our results show that forest multifunctionality is limited to subsets of ecosystem services.The importance of tree species composition highlights that a lack of multifunctionality at the stand level can be compensated by managing forests at the

Using high energy accelerators for energy production by nuclear fission goes back to the 1950's with plans for“breeder accelerators”as well as with early ideas on subcritical reactors,which are currently pursued in China and other countries.Also,fusion came in,when the idea emerged in the mid 1970's to use accelerators and their highly time and space compressed beams in order to generate the extremely high density and temperatures required for inertial fusion energy production.Due to the higher repetition rates and efficiencies of accelerators,this was seen as a promising alternative to using high power lasers.After an introduction to nuclear fission applications of accelerators,this review summarizes some of the scientific developments directed towards this challenging application e with focus on the European HIDIF-study-and outlines parameters of future high energy density experiments after construction of the FAIR/Germany and HIAF/China heavy ion accelerator projects.

Choosing a mate is likely one of the most influential decisions any individual makes because it heavily influences their fitness. Going back all the way to the seminal work by Darwin (1871, 1859), we mostly think of females as choosing mates, whereas males compete over mating opportunities with females. This view is very well supported, but somewhat incomplete. As Darwin struggled to find a good explanation for the existence of ornamental traits in males, he proposed Sexual Selection and along with that theory he suggested 2 mechanisms that could lead to and maintain such extreme traits: Female Choice and Male Competition. Historically, male competition was quickly accepted, whereas acceptance of female choice was delayed until much later, coinciding with the rise of modern feminism (Zuk 1993).

Given a graph G and a positive integer k,define the Gallai–Ramsey number to be the minimum number of vertices n such that any k-edge coloring of Kn contains either a rainbow(all different colored)triangle or a monochromatic copy of G.In this paper,we obtain exact values of the Gallai–Ramsey numbers for the union of two stars in many cases and bounds in other cases.This work represents the first class of disconnected graphs to be considered as the desired monochromatic subgraph.

Although cancer immunotherapy has taken center stage,exhaustion of T cells is undeniably one of the major problems preventing it from being fully successful[1].Certainly,reversal of T-cell exhaustion or dysfunction is of great importance for developing new strategies and restoring immune function.Nevertheless,counterarguments about the adverse effect of reversing T-cell exhaustion(leading to overactivation of T cells and cytotoxicity)and even their irreversible properties have been quite common in scientific debates.With more to be discovered about the reasons for T-cell failure,a better understanding of the molecular factors/determinants[2,3]that shape/remodel“heterogeneous”dysfunctional T cells in cancer makes clear sense.Indeed,two recent publications in Nature immunology have described the intriguing perspective of T-cell exhaustion[4,5].Of interest,Vignali et al.focused on the hypoxia-driven CD39-dependent suppressor function of exhausted T cells,whereas Saadey et al.emphasized restoring the epigenetic balance of TGFβ1/BMP signaling in exhausted T cells to unlock responsiveness to immune checkpoint blockade therapy.

For the 2-D quasilinear wave equation （δt2-△x）u＋2∑i,j=0gij（δu）δiju=0 satisfying null condition or both null conditions, a blowup or global existence result has been shown by Alinhac. In this paper, we consider a more general 2-D quasilinear wave equation （δt2-△x）u＋2∑i,j=0gij（δu）δiju=0 satisfying null conditions with small initial data and the coefficients depending simultaneously on u and δu. Through construction of an approximate solution, combined with weighted energy integral method, a quasi-global or global existence solution are established by continuous induction.

Drug abuse has a long,but also different history in Germany and China.TheOpium War largely influenced the history of China in 19th century;however,China was once recognized as a drug-free nation for 3 decades from the 1950s tothe 1980s.Drug abuse has spread quickly since re-emerging as a national problemin China in the late 1980s.The number of registered drug abusers increased from70 000 in 1990 to more than 1 million by the end of 2005.In past decades,illicit drugtrafficking and production have swept most provinces in China,and drug abusehas caused many problems for both abusers and the community.One major drug-related problem is the spread of HIV,which has caused major social and economicdamage in China.Germany,the largest developed European country,also facesthe drug and addiction problem.Germany has about 150 000 heroin addicts,forwhom HIV/AIDS has become a serious threat since the mid 1980s.To control thedrug problem,the German Government adopted the"Action Plan on Drugs andAddiction"in 2003;the China Central Government approved a similar regulationin the antidrug campaign in 2005.Germany has experience in reducing drug-re-lated harm.The methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) program has run formore than 20 years and the public has become more tolerant of addicts.In 2003,China began the MMT program for controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS.It isnecessary for China to learn from developed countries to acquire success in itsantidrug campaign.In this review,we will go over the differences and similaritiesin drug abuse between Germany and China.The differences are related to history,population and economics,drug policy context,drug laws,HIV/hepatitis C virusinfection,the MMT program and so on.These 2 nations have drug abuse prob-lems with different histories and currently use different approaches to handleillicit drug marketing and use.The legal penalties for illicit drug offences reflectthe social differences of these 2 nations with respect to the seriousness of particu-lar types of crimes.The characteristics of th
