Core-shell particles of C-doped CdS and graphene: A noble metal-free approach for efficient photocatalytic H_(2) generation

To achieve efficient photocatalytic H_(2) generation from water using earth-abundant and cost-effective materials,a simple synthesis method for carbon-doped CdS particles wrapped with graphene(C-doped CdS@G)is *** doping effect and the application of graphene as cocatalyst for CdS is studied for photocatalytic H_(2) *** most active sample consists of CdS and graphene(CdS-0.15G)exhibits promising photocatalytic activity,producing 3.12 mmol g^-(1) h^-(1) of H_(2) under simulated solar light which is^4.6 times superior than pure CdS nanoparticles giving an apparent quantum efficiency(AQY)of 11.7%.The enhanced photocatalytic activity for H_(2) generation is associated to the narrowing of the bandgap,enhanced light absorption,fast interfacial charge transfer,and higher carrier density(N_(D))in C-doped CdS@G *** is achieved by C doping in CdS nanoparticles and the formation of a graphene shell over the C-doped CdS *** stability test,the spent catalysts sample was also characterized to investigate the nanostructure.

Infectious diarrhea is a major cause of infant mortality in most developing countries. In this research, we evaluated the potential of immobilized Lactobacillus plantarum NCImB 8826 on weanimix infant cereal and its effectiveness in reducing the severity of Citrobacter rodentium-induced diarrhea in weanling mice. Thirty-six C57BL/6 weanling mice were placed into four groups (n = 9 each;negative, positive, prevention and cure). mice received either L. plantarum (109 CFU/g) immobilized on weanimix infant cereal 3 days before C. rodentium (109 CFU/ ml) infection (Prevention) or 3 days after C. rodentium infection (Cure). A positive control group was infected with C. rodentium only, while a nega-tive control group received neither L. plantarum nor C. rodentium. Positive control mice showed colonic mucosal and submucosal inflammation, erosion, and mucosal epithelia hyperplasia with the C. rodentium infection. mice in the prevention and cure groups had less severe histologic alterations in the colon. Some beneficial effect of L. plantarum was observed in cecal short-chain fatty acid concentrations, which stimulates water and electrolytes absorption to reduce diarrhea. Our findings demonstrated that L. plantarum NCImB 8826 could be immobilized on weanimix infant cereal to help reduce diarrhea during weaning.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the best characterised cancers, with extensive data documenting the sequential gene mutations that underlie its development. Complementary datasets are also being generated describing changes in protein and RNA expression, tumour biology and clinical outcome. Both the quantity and the variety of information are inexorably increasing and there is now an accompanying need to integrate these highly disparate datasets. In this article we aim to explain why we believe that mathematical modelling represents a natural tool or language with which to integrate these data and, in so doing, to provide insight into CRC.

Cavities and fractures significantly affect the flow paths in carbonate reservoirs and should be accurately accounted for in numerical ***,we consider the problem of computing the effective permeability of rock samples based on high-resolution 3DCT scans containingmillions of *** use the Stokes-Brinkman equations in the entire domain,covering regions of free flow governed by the Stokes equations,porous Darcy flow,and transitions between *** presence of different length scales and large(ten orders of magnitude)contrasts in permeability leads to highly ill-conditioned linear systems of equations,which are difficult to *** obtain a problem that is computationally tractable,we first analyze the relative importance of the Stokes and Darcy terms for a set of idealized 2D *** find that,in terms of effective permeability,the Stokes-Brinkman equations are only applicable for a special parameter set where the effective free-flow permeability is less than four orders of magnitude different from the matrix *** other cases can be accurately modeled with either the Stokes or the Darcy end-member flows,depending on if there do or do not exist percolating free-flow *** insights obtained are used to perform a direct computation of the effective permeability of a rock sample model with more than 8 million cells.

AIm： To characterize the influence of diet-induced changes in body fat on colitis severity in SlVlAD3-/- mice.mETHODS： SmAD3-/- mice （6-8 wk of age） were ran- domly assigned to receive a calorie restricted （30% of control; CR）, control （CON）, or high fat （HF） diet for 20 wk and were gavaged with sterile broth or with Helicobacter hepaticus （H. hepaticus） to induce colitis. Four weeks after infection, mice were sacrificed and the cecum and colons were processed for histological evaluation.RESULTS： Dietary treatment significantly influenced body composition prior to infection （P 〈 0.05）, with CR mice having less （14%±2%） and HF-fed mice more body fat （32% ± 7%） compared to controls （22%±4%）. Differences in body composition were associated with alterations in plasma levels of leptin （HF 〉 CON 〉 CR） and adiponectin （CON 〉 HF 〉/ CR）（P 〈 0.05）. There were no significant differences in colitis scores between CON and HF-fed mice 4 wk post-infection. Consistent with this, differences in proliferation and in- flammation markers （COX-2, iNOS）, and infiltrating cell types （CD3^＋ T lymphocytes, macrophages） were not observed. Unexpectedly, only 40% of CR mice survived infection with H. hepaticus, with mortality observed as early as I wk following induction of colitis.CONCLUSION： Increased adiposity does not influence colitis severity in SmAD3-/- mice. Importantly, caloric restriction negatively impacts survival following pathogen challenge, potentially due to an impaired immune response.

AIm： To identify and characterize drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic （SmAD）3-dependent changes in immune cell populations following infection with He- Iicobacter hepaticus （H. hepaticus）. mETHODS： SmAD3/ （n = L9） and colitis-resistant SmAD3＋/ （n = 24） mice （8-10 wk of age） were in- fected with/-/, hepaticus and changes in immune cell populations [T lymphocytes, natural killer （NK） cells, T regulatory cells] were measured in the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes （msLNs） at 0 d, 3 d, 7 d and 28 d post-infection using flow cytometry. Genotype-dependent changes in T lymphocytes and granzyme B＋ cells were also assessed after 28 d in proximal colon tissue using immunohistochemistry. RESULTS： As previously observed, SmAD3＋, but not SmAD3＋/- mice, developed colitis, peaking at 4 wk post-infection. No significant changes in T cell subsets were observed in the spleen or in the msLNs between genotypes at any time point. However, CD4＋ and CD8＋/ CD62L＋＋ cells, an effector T lymphocyte population, as well as NK cells （NKp46/DX5＋） were significantly higher in the msLNs of SmAD3/ mice at 7 d and 28 d post-in- fection. In the colon, a higher number of CD3＋ cells were present in SmAD3＋ compared to SmAD3＋/- mice at base- line, which did not significantly change during infection. However, the number of granzyme B＋ cells, a marker of cytolytic lymphoo/tes, significantly increased in SmAD3＋ mice 28 d post-infection compared to both SmAD3＋/- mice and to baseline values. This was consistent with more severe colitis development in these animals. CONCLUSION： Data suggest that defects in SmAD3 signaling increase susceptibility to H. hepaticus-induced colitis through aberrant activation and/or dysregulation of effector lymphoo/tes.

At present,laminar airflow(LAF)systems and mixing ventilation(mV)systems are two commonly used ventila-tion solutions for operating rooms(ORs)to ensure the required indoor air ***,recent studies have shown that there is little difference in the prevalence of surgical site infection(SSI)for the LAF systems and mV *** objective of this study was to compare the performance of an LAF system with an mV system in ORs at *** hospital,*** this study,all the experimental measurements were conducted in real ORs with LAF and mV *** study found that the air velocity above the surgical incision is approximately two times higher in the OR with LAF than that in the OR with *** use of surgical lamps and different airflow patterns may contribute to the different surgical microenvironment of ORs with LAF and mV.
