The Role of Information and Knowledge in Achieving Environmentally Sound Farming: A Chinese Case

The paper analyzes the role of information–knowledge for making farming environmentally friendly, using eutrophication of the main drinking water reservoir of Tianjin, China as a case. The analysis considers information and instruction sources used by farmers in relation to their farming and environmental issues, in particular application of fertilizers, and on this basis it discusses governance and policy measures. The study is interdisciplinary, covering both natural and social sciences, and it is based on quantitative methodology, employing descriptive and multivariate statistical methods. The main findings are:(i) farmers make use of a broad range of information and instruction sources, thereby confirming the claim that eutrophication and hence good farming practices are a “wicked” problem;(ii) the young and the members of the Communist Party are more active than others in using a broad range of information and instruction sources;(iii)different categories of farmers give priority to different information and instruction sources,providing a basis for tailor-made disseminations;(iv) the majority of farmers report receiving clear instructions for using fertilizers, yet half of them conceive using fertilizers correctly as difficult;(v) receiving instructions from other farmers and suppliers cater for high scores on clear instructions; and(vi) farmers are best seen as muddling through different pressures from above and different knowledge bases, and not just willy-nilly responding to top-down policy instructions.

The Pollution Caused by Protection: The Unintended Consequences of the Local Governance of the Urban Drinking Water Source Protection in Tianjin, China

This paper examines how the hierarchical way of governing erodes and distorts the function of environmental policies by analyzing the unintended consequences of the governance of the urban drinking water source protection in Tianjin, a mega-city in China, as a case study. Since the1990s, Tianjin Municipal Government and Jixian Government(China) have setup a series of local measures for environmental governance to protect Yuqiao Reservoir, which is the water source of Tianjin and its surroundings. In general, the measures fall into three categories: water management, residence management, and the waste management. The governing principle is “no use, no pollution”. However, according to the field study, unintended consequences come along:some new kinds of pollution, from both household and production, occur in this area as a result of the implementation of these measures. Through the combination of functional analysis and the unintended consequences approach, three responsible factors have been found: Firstly, the absence of local residents in the whole decision-making process leads to distrust of the government, especially at the grass-roots level. Secondly, the “no use, no pollution” logic vastly reduces the reservoir’s utility and significance to the local residents, which leads to “no use, no protection”. Thirdly, the collapse of the traditional rules of mutual supervision also contributes to the deterioration. In conclusion, the typically hierarchical way of governing in this area leads to inevitable unintended consequences. This paper starts by summarizing relevant literature on local protective governance of the environment, especially in China, focusing on the consequences and their causes, in relation to research done in the area of unintended consequences of purposive social action. Then, following the empirical objects and the data collection methods,we present the case study in Yuqiao reserve, Tianjin, China, and analyze the unintended consequences. Moving

Victimization and PTSD in an Indian youth sample from Pune City

Background: Indian adolescents are presumably exposed to a range of potentially traumatizing and negative life events. However, the knowledge on this area is relatively sparse. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of exposure to potentially traumatizing and negative life events and the occurrence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among a specific sample of Indian adolescents. Method: A sample of 411 Indian 9th graders, (M = 14.15 years) from two private schools in Pune City answered a questionnaire about 1) socio-demographical background and 2) the direct or indirect exposure to 20 specific, potentially traumatizing and negative life events. Also, they filled out Part IV of the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ-IV) to assess their level of PTSD-symptoms. Results: 70% of the females and 85% of the males had been exposed to or witnessed at least one traumatizing or negative life event. The mean number of experienced events was 2.5. The most common events were: death of someone close, traffic accidents, serious illness, witnessing the injury or killing of others, and coming close to being injured or killed. The prevalence of PTSD was 10%. Males reported higher direct as well as indirect exposure than females to all events, while no significant gender difference was found in the prevalence of PTSD. Living in a single-parent household meant increased risk of developing PTSD. Conclusion: Exposure to potentially traumatizing events was comparable to that seen in similar studies in Western European youth samples. Prevalence of PTSD was also in the same range. This may be attributable to a number of protective factors associated with the specific sample. Males were exposed to more potentially traumatizing events than females, but contradictory to most other studies, no gender difference in prevalence of PTSD was seen. These differences in comparison to earlier studies might reflect cultural and national circumstances that distinguish this Indian sample

Patients’ Experiences of Trust in the Patient-Nurse Relationship——A Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies

Aims and Objectives: To report a synthesis of the literature on the meaning of trust in the context of patients’ experiences of nursing. The review question was “How do patients describe the meaning of trust in the nursing relationship?” Background: Trust is essential in nursing as it has the potential to create opportunities for the human being to gain faith, hope and meaning in life as well as open up for new experiences. Trust is an interpersonal and essential element of all patient-nurse relationships and requires nurses to create a trusting relationship with the patients. Design: Systematic qualitative literature review. Methods: Systematic searches were conducted for the period January 2002 to December 2012, updated in January 2014. 20 papers were included. Results: Four categories emerged: Attitudes related to trust, indicating that trust is fundamental and existential;Experiences of trust, concerning how trust can be sensed;The patient-nurse relationship, revealing the qualities of the person who creates trust;and Where trust occurs, illuminating the contextual relevancies of trust. Conclusions: Patients’ experiences of trust in nursing are dependent on the nurses’ knowledge, level of commitment in the dialogue to creating and developing the relationship and contextual issues. Implications for nursing practice: Reflection on a trusting relationship with the patient is necessary for a deeper conceptual understanding of trust in nursing. Clinical nurse researchers nurse supervisors, managers and nurse educatorsshould discuss different areas of trust during nursing supervision and focus-group meetings as well as with nursing graduates to ensure that nurses develop knowledge of how to create a trusting patient-nurse relationship.

Transforming growth factor-beta(TGFβ)is a highly potent immunosuppressive *** TGFβis a tumor suppressor in early/premalignant cancer lesions,the cytokine has several tumor-promoting effects in advanced cancer;abrogation of the antitumor immune response is one of the most important tumor-promoting *** several immunoregulatory mechanisms have recently been shown to be targets of specific T cells,we hypothesized that TGFβis targeted by naturally occurring specific T cells and thus could be a potential target for immunomodulatory cancer ***,we tested healthy donor and cancer patient T cells for spontaneous T-cell responses specifically targeting 3820-mer epitopes derived from TGFβ*** identified numerous CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)T-cell responses against several epitopes in TGFβ.Additionally,several ex vivo responses were *** enriching specific T cells from different donors,we produced highly specific cultures specific to several TGFβ-derived *** CD8^(+)T-cell clones specific for both a 20-mer epitope and a 9-mer HLA-A2 restricted killed epitope peptide were pulsed in HLA-A2+target cells and killed the HLA-A2+cancer cell lines THP-1 and ***,stimulation of THP-1 cancer cells with cytokines that increased TGFβexpression increased the fraction of killed *** conclusion,we have shown that healthy donors and cancer patients harbor CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)T cells specific for TGFβ-derived epitopes and that cytotoxic T cells with specificity toward TGFβ-derived epitopes are able to recognize and kill cancer cell lines in a TGFβ-dependent manner.

目的:探索中德高级系统式家庭治疗督导师连续培训(简称督导班)的效果,分析讨论起效因素。方法:根据kirkpatrick培训效果4层次培训效果模型(反应、学习、行为、效果)和培训起效因素3分类方法 (学员特征因素、组织因素、培训系统因素)自编督导现状调查问卷、培训效果评价问卷和督导培训带来的改变访谈提纲。选取参加督导班的学员51名,首次培训前填写自编督导现状调查问卷,末次培训结束填写自编督导现状调查问卷和自编培训效果评价问卷。培训结束后1年,选取其中12名学员,使用自编督导培训带来的改变访谈提纲定性访谈。结果:培训后,学员对培训理论、实践、教师、难度、实用性认为满意的人数达到92. 2%～98. 0%;学员自评知识、技能、自信得分及提供督导小时数均较培训前提升(均P <0. 001)。培训结束后1年的深入随访显示,经过督导班培训,12名学员中9名学员在学术活动的参与度,督导实践的意愿、效果、频率,心理咨询与治疗实践的工作效率上均有提升和成长。理论与实践相结合侧重实践、恰到好处使用学员资源、充分利用教师资源的授课模式是重要的起效因素。结论:经过本培训,学员对学习过程的满意度和效果、学习后参与实践及实践效果方面显著提升,理论与实践相结合、使用学员资源和教师资源是本培训的起效因素。
