Excessive heavy metal concentrations in water can pose a threat to human *** research analyzed 160 groundwater samples used for hygiene and sanitation,of which 62 were used for consumption,and 98 other types of drinking water were *** research findings indicate that 6%of groundwater for hygiene and sanitation and 13%of drinking water(7.8%groundwater,5.2%refill water)were deemed unfit for use due to elevated concentrations of certain heavy metals surpassing the maximum ***,Cd,Co,Hg,mn,and Pb were detected in several drinking water samples deemed unsuitable for *** heavy metals suspected to originate from natural sources are Co,Fe,mn,As,and Zn,while Pb,Cd,Hg,and Co are suspected to have anthropogenic *** arsenic exposure through the ingestion pathway posed a non-carcinogenic health risk to the local *** were found to be more susceptible than adult males and *** estimated average non-carcinogenic risk levels based on the water sources were refill water>well water>rainwater>spring ***,it is essential to monitor raw water sources at refill water depots in the study area and implement policies related to the quality of raw water sources,technology maintenance processes,and the quality of processed water from refill water ***,the community should be educated about householdscale water treatment to minimize health risks and consider using untreated well water and rainwater for consumption.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS)is a well-established method for in-depth characterization of electronic *** practice hundreds of energy-points should be sampled during the measurements,and most of them are ***,it is also tedious to estimate reasonable parameters in the atomic Hamiltonians for mechanistic *** implement an Adversarial Bayesian optimization(ABO)algorithm comprising two coupled BOs to automatically fit the many-body model Hamiltonians and to sample effectively based on active learning(AL).Taking NiO as an example,we find that less than 30 sampling points are sufficient to recover the complete XAS with the corresponding crystal field and charge transfer models,which can be selected based on intuitive hypothesis *** applications on the experimental XAS spectra reveal that less than 80 sampling points give reasonable XAS and reliable atomic model *** ABO algorithm has a great potential for future applications on automated physics-driven XAS analysis and AL sampling.

Suitability of Hermetia illucens larvae meal and fat in broiler diets:effects on animal performance,apparent ileal digestibility,gut histology,and microbial metabolites

Background:The possibility of partially replacing soybean meal(SBm)with Hermetia illucens(HI)defatted larvae meal in broiler nutrition has frequently been *** sustainability reasons,however,the larvae fat produced during defatting should also be used and could be particularly beneficial regarding gut health due to its fatty acid *** evaluate the suitability of HI larvae as protein and fat source,a 2×3 factorial arrangement with two types of protein,***(S)or SBm and 15%of its crude protein replaced by HI larvae meal(L),and three levels of fat sources,namely 0(0 L),50%(50 L)or 100%HI larvae fat(100 L)at the expense of soybean oil was ***:In the starter phase,an interaction showed higher body weight(BW),average daily gain(ADG)and improved feed conversion ratio(FCR)if 50%or 100%HI larvae fat was fed with HI larvae ***,BW,ADG and FCR improved when feeding HI larvae meal as protein ***,we observed an increased average daily feed intake in the grower,finisher,and overall phase in the L groups and an improved FCR in 0 L compared to 50 L groups during the overall *** apparent ileal digestibility,HI larvae meal feeding increased dry matter,organic matter,and fat *** HI larvae meal as protein source decreased the concentrations of agmatine,spermidine,spermine and ammonia in the caecal digesta,whereas fat source affected agmatine with higher concentrations in 50 L compared to 0 L in the colonic *** contrast,caecal ethanolamine concentrations increased in HI larvae meal groups compared to *** butyric acid concentrations decreased with HI larvae meal *** interaction was found for the jejunal villus area,being higher in L+100 L compared to S+100 ***,L groups had greater villus ***:A partial replacement of SBm with HI larvae meal and soybean oil with HI larvae fat in broiler diets without impairing animal performance or gut health seems possible

management of cataract surgery in Lowe syndrome

AIm: To evaluate the ophthalmic and anesthesiologic management of cataract surgery in children with Lowe syndrome receiving lens removal, the development and management of secondary ***: This retrospective case series included 12 eyes of 6 children with genetically verified Lowe syndrome receiving cataract removal. Information regarding the type and duration of surgery and total anesthesia time were recorded. Additionally, intra-and postoperative complications were noted as well as clinical examinations such as visual acuity and funduscopy. RESULTS: All children received simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery at the mean age of 8.98±3.58 wk. Lensectomy combined with posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy was performed in all children. The mean time for cataract surgery per eye was 35.83±8.86 min, whereas the total time of surgery was 153.33±22.11 min. The mean extubation time and duration at recovery room was 42.33±22.60 min and 130.00±64.37 min, respectively. During surgery, a decrease of oxygen saturation below 93% was found in only one child. During the postoperative followup, nystagmus(6 children) and strabismus(5 children) was commonly found in contrast to no case of visual axis opacification. Secondary glaucoma developed in five eyes of three children, which was treated with topical eye drops in only one child. A trabeculectomy was performed in both eyes of one child, whereas removal of syechia and an iridectomy in one eye of one child. CONCLUSION: Bilateral simultaneous cataract surgery under general anesthesia is a safe surgical procedure in Lowe syndrome children. The glaucoma screening with intraocular pressure measurements is crucial in the postoperative management of Lowe syndrome patients to avoid additional visual impairment.

Comparing two IBm implementations for the simulation of uniform packed beds

Nowadays,the design of fixed packed bed reactors still relies on empirical correlations,which,especially for small tube to particle diameter ratios,are mostly too inaccurate because of the presence of wall ***,the simulation of fixed packed bed reactors plays an important role to predict and control the flow and process parameters in such,nowadays and in the *** of its straightforward applicability to non-uniform packings with particles of arbitrary shapes,the immersed boundary method(IBm)has advantages over other numerical methods and is used more and more *** paper compares two approaches of IBms for the simulation of fixed bed reactors with spherical shaped *** classic,smooth approach is compared to the straightforward to implement blocked-off method for velocity fields above the fixed bed for particle Reynolds numbers of 300 and *** from experimental inline PIV-measurements of the reactor to be simulated serve as a basis for *** good agreement with the experiment is found for both simulation methodologies with higher resolutions,considering the more stable flow at a particle Reynolds number of *** in the different IBm approaches occurred for the more unsteady flow at a particle Reynolds number of *** to the blocked-off method,the smooth IBm reflects the formation of additional jets and recirculation zones better right above the bed,though increasing the fluid mesh resolution improves the accuracy of the blocked-off ***,a more diffusive behaviour is found for the blocked-off simulations due to the stairstep representation,which is avoided by using interpolation stencils as in the smooth *** higher mesh refinement in the blocked-off IBm this effect can be reduced,but this also increases the computational effort.

Large-area nanopatterned graphene for ultrasensitive gas sensing

Chemical vapor deposited （CVD） graphene is nanopatterned using a spherical block copolymer etch mask. The use of spherical rather than cylindrical block copolymers allows homogeneous patterning of cm-scale areas without any substrate surface treatment. Raman spectroscopy was used to study the con- trolled generation of point defects in the graphene lattice with increasing etching time, confirming that alongside the nanomesh patterning, the nanopatterned CVD graphene presents a high defect density between the mesh holes. The nanopatterned samples showed sensitivities for NO2 of more than one order of magnitude higher than for non-patterned graphene. NO2 concentrations as low as 300 ppt were detected with an ultimate detection limit of tens of ppt. This is the smallest value reported so far for non-UV illuminated graphene chemiresistive NO2 gas sensors. The dramatic improvement in the gas sensitivity is believed to be due to the high adsorption site density, thanks to the combination of edge sites and point defect sites. This work opens the possibility of large area fabrication of nanopatterned graphene with extremely high densities of adsorption sites for sensing applications.

Can politically oriented interventions in built heritage contribute to its authenticity?Erbil Citadel's Babylonian Gate as a case study

Today,the concept of built heritage authenticity is a projection screen for conficting demands and thus a'contested field'.Short-sighted readings started to drag the concept behind different il-considered treatises,in which some heritage aspects loosely outweighed other *** perspectives that tend to freeze heritage structures in time,such as those that are privileged upon other contemporary socio-cultural issues,while political takes also overshadowed other epistemological prospects,and vice *** have made inclusion of what is regarded as inevitable changes'within the built context problematic as to the re-interpretation and thus assessment of its *** their possible momentary threat to the latter,these changes may add to the cultural value of the context over time,granting new potential that may instead boost its *** paper investigates the potential continuity of Erbil Citadel's Babylonian Gate as an inevitable change within the site's built context by studying the Gate's controversial political impacts on the context's *** study affirms that authenticity is a transcendental value of an open-ended progressive nature,which cannot be reduced to a specific period or properties within the historical chronology of built ***,authenticity should be approached as a meaningful existential issue,while revelation of its essence and thus its dimension entails precise scrutiny of both the tangibles and intangibles of the ***,to be part of its authenticity,any change in the context should be adaptable and possibly incorporated as a new value within its cultural strata,thus enabling progressive support for site authenticity.

Protein adsorption on biomaterials for bone substitution,such as calcium phosphates(CaP),evokes biological responses and shapes the interactions of biomaterials with the surrounding biological *** adsorb when CaP materials are combined with growth factor-rich hemoderivatives prior to implantation to achieve enhanced angiogenesis and stimulate new bone ***,the identification of the adsorbed proteins and their angiogenic effect on bone homeostasis remain incompletely *** this study,we analyzed the adsorbed complex protein composition on CaP surfaces when using the hemoderivatives plasma,platelet lysate in plasma(PL),and washed platelet lysate proteins(wPL).We detected highly abundant,non-regenerative proteins and anti-angiogenic proteins adsorbed on CaP surfaces after incubation with PL and wPL by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry(LC–mS)***,we measured a decreased amount of adsorbed pro-angiogenic growth *** formation assays with human umbilical endothelial cells demonstrated that the CaP surfaces only stimulate an angiogenic response when kept in the hemoderivative medium but not after washing with *** results highlight the necessity to correlate biomaterial surfaces with complex adsorbed protein compositions to tailor the biomaterial surface toward an enrichment of pro-angiogenic factors.
