Recently,the term theragenerative has been proposed for biomaterials capable of inducing therapeutic approaches followed by repairing/regenerating the tissue/*** study is focused on the design of a new theragenerative nanocomposite composed of an amphiphilic non-ionic surfactant(Pluronic F127),bioactive glass(BG),and black phosphorus(BP).The nanocomposite was prepared through a two-step synthetic strategy,including a microwave treatment that turned BP nanosheets(BPNS)into quantum dots(BPQDs)with 5±2 nm dimensions in *** effects of surfactant and microwave treatment were assessed in vitro:the surfactant distributes the ions homogenously throughout the composite and the microwave treatment chemically stabilizes the *** presence of BP enhanced bioactivity and promoted calcium phosphate formation in simulated body *** inherent anticancer activity of BP-containing nanocomposites was tested against osteosarcoma cells in vitro,finding that 150μg mL^(-1)was the lowest concentration which prevented the proliferation of SAOS-2 cells,while the counterpart without BP did not affect the cell growth ***,the apoptosis pathways were evaluated and a mechanism of action was *** irradiation was applied to induce further proliferation suppression on SAOS-2 cells through *** inhibitory effects of bare BP nanomaterials and nanocomposites on the migration and invasion of bone cancer,breast cancer,and prostate cancer cells were assessed in vitro to determine the anticancer potential of nanomaterials against primary and secondary bone *** regenerative behavior of the nanocomposites was tested with healthy osteoblasts and human mesenchymal stem cells;the BPQDs-incorporated nanocomposite significantly promoted the proliferation of osteoblast cells and induced the osteogenic differentiation of stem *** study introduces a new multifunctional theragenerative platform with promising potential for simultaneous bone cancer t

Massive hepatic necrosis with toxic liver syndrome following portal vein ligation

Right portal vein ligation (PVL) is a safe and widespread procedure to induce controlateral liver hypertrophy for the treatment of bilobar colorectal liver metastases. We report a case of a 60-year-old man treated by both right PVL and ligation of the glissonian branches of segment 4 for colorectal liver metastases surrounding the right and median hepatic veins. After surgery, the patient developed massive hepatic necrosis with secondary pulmonary and renal insufficiency requiring transfer to the intensive care unit. This so-called toxic liver syndrome finally regressed after hemofiltration and positive oxygen therapy. Diagnosis of acute congestion of the ligated lobe was suspected. The mechanism suspected was an increase in arterial inflow secondary to portal vein ligation concomitant with a decrease in venous outflow due to liver metastases encircling the right and median hepatic vein. This is the first documented case of toxic liver syndrome in a non-cirrhotic patient with favorable issue, and a rare complication of PVL.

Phytases belong to the class of phosphohydrolases that begin the step-wise hydrolysis of phosphates from phytates. Phytates are a derivative of myo-inositol, which is the primary storage form of organic phosphorus in plant cells. Phytase has been used globally to diminish phosphorus pollution and to enhance nutrition in monogastrics. In this review, the classification, sources, and diversity of microbial phytases, and their practical applications, as well as supplementation of the soil with transgenic and wild types of microbial strains, which can release phytase to enhance phosphorus availability for plant uptake and reduce the need for fertilizers, are discussed. The overexpressed microbial phytases in transgenic plants enhance the growth capacity of co-cultivated plants and can therefore be employed in agricultural and biotechnological practices, such as intercropping. The introduction of phytases into the soil for improved plant growth and enhanced crop yield can be accomplished without extra cost. A diverse group of photoautotrophic microalgae can synthesize phytase and will likely be useful in many human food and animal industries.

XEN^(■) implant and trabeculectomy medium-term quality of life assessment and comparison of results

AIM: To evaluate and compare the quality of life of patients submitted to XEN~? implant or trabeculectomy and the relationship with potentially involved ***: A cross-sectional study of patients with advanced open-angle glaucoma who underwent implantation of XEN~?(group 1) and trabeculectomy(group 2) between October 2015 and February 2017. The studied variables were: age, gender, follow-up time, need of topical anti-hypertensive therapy, visual acuity and intraocular pressure(IOP). The quantification of the quality of life was attained through the Glaucoma Symptom Scale(GSS) questionnaire. RESULTS: Totally 34 eyes(34 patients) were included, 17 in each group. The mean GSS scores for group 1 were 42.6±6.8(median, 47; p25, 36.5; p75, 48.5) and for group 2 it was 41.6±7.0(median, 43; p25, 36.5; p75, 47.0; P=0.34). There was a strong negative correlation between the need for topical anti-hypertensive drugs and the GSS result in both groups(r=-0.88, P<0.01, r=-0.59, P=0.01, respectively) and a moderate negative correlation with IOP in group 1(r=-0.50, P=0.03).CONCLUSION: The analysis demonstrates the noninferiority of medium-term quality of life of one group in relation to the other(XEN~? implant and trabeculectomy). The number of topical anti-hypertensive drugs and IOP negatively influenced the quality of life.

Priority-Based Hybrid MAC for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks

This paper introduces I-MAC, a new medium access control protocol for wireless sensor networks. I-MAC targets at improving both channel utilization and energy efficiency while taking into account traffic load for each sensor node according to its role in the network. I-MAC reaches its objectives through prioritized and adaptive access to the channel. I-MAC performances obtained through simulations for different network topologies, scenarios and traffic loads show significant improvements in energy efficiency, channel utilization, loss ratio and delay compared to existing protocols.

In recent years,evidence supporting the theory of obesity paradox has increased,showing that obese/overweight people with prevalent chronic diseases experience lower mortality compared with patients of normal *** far,evidence is most comprehensive in cardiovascular and chronic renal diseases;however,published studies are prone to many biases,enabling us to reach a definite *** data in chronic liver disease is scarce and *** is traditionally associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and steatosis in viral hepatitis and as such one would not expect the obesity paradox to be a real possibility in liver ***,there seem to be new data indicating the opposite-the obesity paradox exists in severe and end-stage liver cirrhosis,which could be attributed to a better lean mass in patients with higher body mass index,meaning that sarcopenia,as one of the most important prognostic factors of survival,is less likely to be ***,the problem of various methodological problems addressing the association between body weight and mortality,which is present both in liver disease and other chronic diseases,are preventing us from attaining an unanimous ***,we should be aware that the obesity paradox might be true,especially in severe and end-stage *** suggests focusing our efforts toward preserving or building up fat-free mass and decreasing infiammatory activity responsible for catabolism and sarcopenia,and implying that the underlaying cause should be treated.

Topology Control and Routing in Large Scale Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, a two-tiered Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) where nodes are divided into clusters and nodes forward data to base stations through cluster heads is considered. To maximize the network lifetime, two energy efficient approaches are investigated. We first propose an approach that optimally locates the base stations within the network so that the distance between each cluster head and its closest base station is decreased. Then, a routing technique is developed to arrange the communication between cluster heads toward the base stations in order to guaranty that the gathered information effectively and efficiently reach the application. The overall dynamic framework that combines the above two schemes is described and evaluated. The experimental performance evaluation demonstrates the efficacy of topology control as a vital process to maximize the network lifetime of WSNs.

A P2P Platform for Collaborative Aggregated Multimedia Sharing

Peer-to-peer technologies have emerged as a powerful and scalable communication model for large scale content shar-ing. However, they are not yet provided with optimized heterogeneous aggregated content management functionality since they lack rich semantic specifications. To overcome these shortcomings, we elaborated a reference model of P2P architecture for a dynamic aggregation, sharing and retrieval of heterogeneous multimedia contents (simple or aggre-gated). This architecture was mainly developed under the CAM4Home European research project and is fully based on the CAM4Home semantic metadata model. This semantic model relies on RDF (Resource Description Framework) and is rich (but simple enough), extensible and dedicated for the description of any kind of multimedia *** this paper, we detail and evaluate an original semantic-based community network architecture for heterogeneous multimedia con-tent sharing and retrieval. Within the presentedarchitecture, multimedia contents are managed according to their asso-ciated CAM4Home semantic metadata through a structured P2P topology. This topology relies on a semantically en-hanced DHT (Distributed Hash Table) and is also provided with an additional indexing system for offering semantic storage and search facilities and overcoming the problem of exact match keywords in DHTs.
