Evaluation of an educational telephone intervention strategy to improve non-screening colonoscopy attendance:A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Colonoscopy attendance is a key quality parameter in colorectal cancer population screening programmes.Within these programmes,educative interventions with bidirectional contact carried out by trained personnel have been proved to be an important tool for colonoscopy attendance improvement,and because of its huge clinical and economic impact,they have been widely implemented.However,outside of this population programmes,educative measures to improve colonoscopy attendance have been poorly studied and no navigation interventions are usually performed.AIM To investigate the clinical and economic impacts of an educational telephone intervention on colonoscopy attendance outside colorectal cancer screening programmes.METHODS This randomized controlled trial included consecutive patients referred to colonoscopy from primary care centres from November 2017 to May 2018.The intervention group(IG)received a telephone intervention,while the control group(CG)did not.Patients assigned to the IG received an educational telephone call 7 d before the colonoscopy appointment.The intervention was carried out by two nurses with deep endoscopic knowledge who were previously trained for a telephone educational intervention for colonoscopy.The impact on patient compliance with preparedness protocols related to bowel cleansing,antithrombotic management,and sedation scheduling was also evaluated.A second call was conducted to assess patient satisfaction.Intention-to-treat(ITT)and perprotocol(PP)analyses were performed.RESULTS A total of 738 and 746 patients were finally included in the IG and CG respectively.Six hundred thirteen(83%)patients were contacted in the IG.The non-attendance rate was lower in the IG,both in the ITT analysis(IG 8.4%vs CG 14.3%,P<0.001)and in the PP analysis(4.4%vs 14.3%,P<0.001).In a multivariable analysis,belonging to the control group increased the risk of nonattendance in both,the ITT analysis(OR 1.81,95%CI:1.27 to 2.58,P=0.001)and the PP analysis(OR 3.56,95%CI:2.25 to 5.64,P<0.001).There was als

Despite the efforts devoted to the identification of new electrode materials with higher specific capacities and electrolyte additives to mitigate the well-known limitations of current lithium-ion batteries,this technology is believed to have almost reached its energy density limit.It suffers also of a severe safety concern ascribed to the use of flammable liquid-based electrolytes.In this regard,solid-state electrolytes(SSEs)enabling the use of lithium metal as anode in the so-called solid-state lithium metal batteries(SSLMBs)are considered as the most desirable solution to tackle the aforementioned limitations.This emerging technology has rapidly evolved in recent years thanks to the striking advances gained in the domain of electrolyte materials,where SSEs can be classified according to their core chemistry as organic,inorganic,and hybrid/composite electrolytes.This strategic review presents a critical analysis of the design strategies reported in the field of SSEs,summarizing their main advantages and disadvantages,and providing a future perspective toward the rapid development of SSLMB technology.

Functional explanation of extreme hatching asynchrony: Male Manipulation Hypothesis

Hatching asynchrony in birds is considered an adaptation to facilitate brood reduction because under conditions of food scarcity, the smallest nestling usually dies soon after hatching, thereby minimizing parental effort. However, in species with extreme hatching asynchrony, the last hatchlings paradoxically experience a very low probability of survival and death can take so long that it can hardly be considered an adaptation. Here, we propose and experimentally tested a new adaptive hypothesis explaining the brood reduction paradox, namely the“Male Manipulation Hypothesis”. Our hypothesis suggests that by inducing asynchronous hatching,females increase the feeding requirements of the brood, which will induce males to increase provisioning effort. In addition, females may extend the period of male manipulation by feeding the smallest nestling just enough to sustain life. Our study showed that male common blackbirds(Turdus merula) increased their effort(i.e., number of food items per hour) in experimental asynchronous broods compared to synchronous broods, while females reduced their contribution, as predicted by the hypothesis.

Quenching autofluorescence in the alimentary canal tissues of Bactericera cockerelli(Hemiptera:Triozidae)for immunofluorescence labeling

Immunofluorescence has been widely used to localize microbes or specific molecules in insect tissues or cells.However,significant autofluorescence is frequently observed in tissues which can interfere with the fluorescent identification of target antigens,leading to inaccurate or even false positive fluorescent labeling.The alimentary canal of the potato psyllid,Bactericera cockerelliŠulc,exhibits intense autofluorescence,hindering the application of immunolocalization for the detection and localization of the economically important pathogen transmitted by this insect,“Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum”(Lso).In the present study,we tested the use of irradiation,hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)and Sudan black B(SBB)treatments to reduce the autofluorescence in the B.cockerelli alimentary canal tissues.Furthermore,we assessed the compatibility of the above‐mentioned treatments with Lso immunolocalization and actin staining using phalloidin.Our results showed that the autofluorescence in the alimentary canal was reduced by irradiation,H2O2,or SBB treatments.The compatibility assays indicated that irradiation and H2O2 treatment both greatly reduced the fluorescent signal associated with Lso and actin.However,the SBB incubation preserved those target signals,while efficiently eliminating autofluorescence in the psyllid alimentary canal.Therefore,herein we propose a robust method for reducing the autofluorescence in the B.cockerelli alimentary canal with SBB treatment,which may improve the use of immunofluorescence labeling in this organism.This method may also have a wide range of uses by reducing the autofluorescence in other arthropod species.

Tight-binding models for ultracold atoms in optical lattices：general formulation and applications

Tight-binding models for ultracold atoms in optical lattices can be properly defined by using the concept of maximally localized Wannier functions for composite bands. The basic principles of this approach are reviewed here, along with different applications to lattice potentials with two minima per unit cell, in one and two spatial dimensions. Two independent methods for computing the tight-binding coefficients—one ab initio, based on the maximally localized Wannier functions, the other through analytic expressions in terms of the energy spectrum—are considered. In the one dimensional case, where the tight-binding coefficients can be obtained by designing a specific gauge transformation, we consider both the case of quasi resonance between the two lowest bands, and that between s and p orbitals. In the latter case, the role of the Wannier functions in the derivation of an effective Dirac equation is also reviewed. Then, we consider the case of a two dimensional honeycomb potential, with particular emphasis on the Haldane model, its phase diagram, and the breakdown of the Peierls substitution. Tunable honeycomb lattices, characterized by movable Dirac points, are also considered. Finally, general considerations for dealing with the interaction terms are presented.

The influence of bacteria on multitrophic interactions among plants, psyllids, and pathogen

The recent emergence ofseveralplant diseases caused by psyllid-borne bacterial pathogens worldwide （Candidatus Liberibaeter spp.） has created renewed interest on the interaction between psyllids and bacteria. In spite of these efforts to understand psyllid association with bacteria, many aspects of their interactions remain poorly understood. As more organisms are studied, subtleties on the molecular interactions as well as on the effects of the bacteria on the psyllid host are being uncovered. Additionally, psyllid-borne bacterial phytopathogens can also affect the host plant, which in turn can impact psyllid physiology and behavior. Here, we review the current literature on different aspects of the influence of bacteria on multitrophic interactions among plants, psyllids, and pathogens. We then highlight gaps that need to be addressed to advance this field, which can have significant implications for controlling these newly emergent and other plant diseases.

Effects of "Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum"(haplotype B)on Bactericera cockerelli fitness and vitellogenesis

"Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum"(Lso)are phloem-restricted and unculturable Gram-negative bacteria.Presently five haplotypes have been identified worldwide;but only haplotypes A and B are associated with the vector Bactericera cockerelli(Sulc.)in the Americas.Previous studies showed that Lso-infection reduces B.cockerelli reproductive output and that Lso haplotype B is more pathogenic than Lso haplotype A.To understand the interaction of Lso haplotype B and B.cockerelli,the fitness of Lso-free and Lso B-infected insects,and the expression of vitellogenin(5cKg7-like),a gene involved directly in the insect reproduction were analyzed.Statistical differences in the number of eggs oviposited,and the total number of progeny nymphs and adults were found among crosses of insects with or without Lso.Significant differences in sex proportions were found between Lso B-infected and Lso-free crosses:a higher proportion of Fi adult females were obtained from Lso B-infected mothers.A significant reduction of BcVgl-like was observed in crosses performed with Lso B-infected females compared to the Lso-free insects.In female cohorts of different age,a significant reduction of BcVgl-like expression was measured in 7-d-old Lso B-infected females(virgin and mated)compared with 7-d-old Lso-free females(virgin and mated),respectively.The reduction of BcVgl-like transcript was associated with a lower number of developing oocytes observed in female5s reproductive systems.Overall,this study represents the first step to understand the interaction of Lso B with B.cockerelli,highlighting the effect of Lso B infection on egg production,BcVgl-like expression,and oocyte development.
