Psychological predictors of bipolarity in panic disorder

BACKGROUND Panic disorders frequently occur with affective disorders,particularly bipolar disorder.Patients with panic disorder and bipolar disorder are more likely to present with severe symptoms,such as high rates of suicidal behavior,poor symptomatic and functional recovery,and poor drug responses.AIM To investigate the psychological characteristics of panic disorder patients related to bipolarity.METHODS A total of 254 patients(136 men and 118 women,mean age=33.48±3.2 years)who were diagnosed with panic disorder were included in the study.Panic disorder with bipolarity(BP+)was defined as a score of≥7 on the Korean version of the Mood Disorder Questionnaire(K-MDQ),and a score lower than 7 was considered as a panic disorder without bipolarity(BP-).Self-report questionnaires were analyzed to examine their association with bipolarity.Psychological tests used in the study were the Mood Disorder Questionnaire(MDQ),Panic Disorder Severity Scale,Beck Depression Inventory,State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(StaI),Temperament and Character Inventory(TCI),and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI).Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the correlation between bipolarity of panic disorder patients and various psychological test results indicative of psychological characteristics.RESULTS Patients with a K-MDQ score of 7 or more were considered to have a history of manic or hypomanic episodes(BP+group,n=128),while patients with K-MDQ scores below 7 were defined as those without bipolarity(BP-group,n=126).The BP+group were more likely to be unmarried(single 56.2%vs 44.4%,P=0.008)and younger(30.78±0.59 vs 37.11±3.21,Phad significantly higher scores on psychological assessment scales,such as the hypochondriasis,psychopathic deviate,masculinity-femininity,psychasthenia,schizophrenia,and hypomania(Ma)in MMPI,and novelty seeking,harm avoidance and self-transcendence in TCI,and StaI(state and trait)compared to the BP-group.In logistic regression analysis,depression in MMPI,selfdirec

Up-conversion photoluminescence(UCPL)refers to the elementary process where low-energy photons are converted into high-energy ones via consecutive interactions inside a medium.When additional energy is provided by intermnal thermal energy in the form of lttice vibrations(phonons),the process is called phonon-assisted UCPL.Here,we report the exceptionally large phonon-assisted energy gain of up to^8kgT(kg is Boltzmann constant,T is temperature)on all-inorganic lead halide perovskite semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals that goes beyond the maximum capabilty of only harvesting optical phonon modes.By systematic optical study in combination with a statistical probability model,we explained the nontrivial phonon-assisted UCPL process in perovskites nanocrystals,where in addition to the strong electron-phonon(light-matter)coupling,other nonlinear processes such as phonon-phonon(matter-matter)interaction also effectively boost the up-conversion efficiency.

The difference between visual and instrumental analyses of a shade selection on natural teeth was investigated. With visual analysis, five prosthodontist examined the middle third of the unrestored maxillary right central incisor of a patient using VItaPEN classical and Vita Toothguide 3D-MASTER tooth shade guide. In instrumental analysis, one prosthodontist examined the same teeth using a spectrophotometer （ShadepilotTM, Degudent, hanau-Wolfgang, Germany, software 2.40）. Overall, instrumental analysis is more accurate and reproducible than a visual assessment. However, the difference is clinically acceptable.

AIM:To clarify the short and long-term results and to prove the usefulness of endoscopic resection in type 3gastric neuroendocrine tumors(NETs).METHODS:Of the 119 type 3 gastric NETs diagnosed from January 1996 to September 2011,50 patients treated with endoscopic resection were enrolled in this study.For endoscopic resection,endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR)or endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)was used.Therapeutic efficacy,complications,and follow-up results were evaluated retrospectively.RESULTS:EMR was performed in 41 cases and ESD in 9 cases.Pathologically complete resection was performed in 40 cases(80.0%)and incomplete resection specimens were observed in 10 cases(7 vs 3 patients in the EMR vs ESD group,P=0.249).Upon analysis of the incomplete resection group,lateral or vertical margin invasion was found in six cases(14.6%)in the EMR group and in one case in the ESD group(11.1%).Lymphovascular invasions were observed in two cases(22.2%)in the ESD group and in one case(2.4%)in the EMR group(P=0.080).During the follow-up period(43.73;13-60 mo),there was no evidence of tumor recurrence in either the pathologically complete resection group or the incomplete resection group.No recurrence was reported during follow-up.In addition,no mortality was reported in either the complete resection group or the incomplete resection group for the duration of the follow-up period.CONCLUSION:Less than 2 cm sized confined submucosal layer type 3 gastric NET with no evidence of lymphovascular invasion,endoscopic treatment could be considered at initial treatment.

Dietary fat-associated osteoarthritic chondrocytes gain resistance to lipotoxicity through PKCK2/StaMP2/FSP27

Free fatty acids(FFAs), which are elevated with metabolic syndrome, are considered the principal offender exerting lipotoxicity. Few previous studies have reported a causal relationship between FFAs and osteoarthritis pathogenesis. However, the molecular mechanism by which FFAs exert lipotoxicity and induce osteoarthritis remains largely unknown. We here observed that oleate at the usual clinical range does not exert lipotoxicity while oleate at high pathological ranges exerted lipotoxicity through apoptosis in articular chondrocytes. By investigating the differential effect of oleate at toxic and nontoxic concentrations, we revealed that lipid droplet(LD) accumulation confers articular chondrocytes, the resistance to lipotoxicity. Using high fat diet-induced osteoarthritis models and articular chondrocytes treated with oleate alone or oleate plus palmitate, we demonstrated that articular chondrocytes gain resistance to lipotoxicity through protein kinase casein kinase 2(PKCK2)—six-transmembrane protein of prostate 2(StaMP2)—and fat-specific protein 27(FSP27)-mediated LD accumulation. We further observed that the exertion of FFAs-induced lipotoxicity was correlated with the increased concentration of cellular FFAs freed from LDs, whether FFAs are saturated or not. In conclusion, PKCK2/StaMP2/FSP27-mediated sequestration of FFAs in LD rescues osteoarthritic chondrocytes. PKCK2/StaMP2/FSP27 should be considered for interventions against metabolic OA.

VHF meteor radar at King Sejong Station,Antarctica

Since 2002, we have been observing the mesosphere and lower thermosphere （MLT） region over King Sejong Station （KSS; 62.22°S, 58.78°W）, Antarctica, using various instruments such as the Spectral Airglow Temperature Imager （SATI）, All Sky Camera （ASC） and VHF meteor radar. The meteor radar, installed in March 2007, continuously measures neutral winds in the alti- tude region 70-110 km and neutral temperature near the mesopause 24 h.d-1, regardless of weather conditions. In this study, we present results of an analysis of the neutral wind data for gravity wave activity over the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, where such activity is known to be very high. Also presented is temperature estimation from measurement of the decay times of meteor trails, which is compared with other temperature measurements from SATI and the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emis- sion Radiometry （SABER） instrument onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energy and Dynamics （TIMED） satel- lite.

Risk factors and prognostic value of acute severe lower gastrointestinal bleeding in Crohn’s disease

BACKGROUND Acute severe lower gastrointestinal bleeding(LGIB)is an uncommon but challenging complication of Crohn’s disease(CD).AIM To identify the predictors of acute severe LGIB and to evaluate the impact of acute severe LGIB on the subsequent clinical course in CD patients.METHODS A retrospective inception cohort study was conducted in 75 CD patients with acute severe LGIB and 1359 CD patients without acute severe LGIB who were diagnosed between February 1991 and November 2019 at Asan Medical Center,a tertiary university hospital in Korea.Multivariable analysis with Cox proportional hazard regression was performed to identify the risk factors for acute severe LGIB.A matched analysis using 72 patients with bleeding and 267 matched patients without within the cohort was also conducted to investigate whether acute severe LGIB is a predictor of clinical outcomes of CD.RESULTS Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that early use of thiopurines[hazard ratio(HR):0.23,95%confidence interval(CI):0.12-0.48;Phavioral progression and intestinal resection were not significantly different between the two matched groups(P=0.139 and P=0.769,respectively).The hospitalization rate was higher in the bleeding group than in the matched non-bleeding group(22.1/100 vs 13.2/100 patient-years;P=0.012).However,if hospitalizations due to bleeding episodes were excluded from the analysis,the hospitalization rate was not significantly different between the bleeding group and the matched nonbleeding group(14.5/100 vs 13.2/100 patient-years;P=0.631).CONCLUSION Early use of thiopurines may reduce the risk of acute severe LGIB.History of acute severe LGIB may not have a significant prognostic value in patients with CD.

Chemo-resistance has pushed cancer treatment to the boundary of failure.This challenge has encouraged scientists to look for nanotechnological solutions.In this study,we have taken this goal one step further without depending on chemotherapy.Specifically,hybrid metal,polymer,and lipid nanoparticles that formed an IR780-a photosensitizer and Zinc copper oxide incorporated nanoparticle(ZCNP)nanoparticles were utilized in a combined photothermal and photodynamic therapy.Through the mediation of triphenylphosphonium(TPP)as a mitochondria-targeting moiety,TPP-conjugated polymer-lipid hybrid nanoparticles containing ZCNP/IR-780 significantly enhanced cellular uptake by cancer cells and selectively targeted the mitochondria,which improved the induction of apoptosis.In tumor-bearing mice,the nanoparticles were detected predominantly in tumors rather than in the other principle organs,which did not show notable signs of toxicity.Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated a great improvement in photothermal and photodynamic efficacy in combination when compared to either one individually,and a significant inhibition of tumor growth was observed with the combined therapies.In summary,this study describes an effective mitochondria-targeting nanocarrier for the treatment of cancer using combined photothermal and photodynamic therapies.

A Potential Weed Control Using Robotic Implement

The research was conducted to develop a robot that can navigate a paddy in between rows or hills which were transplanted by the machine transplanter with equal distance. An initial prototype robotic battery-type weeder was manufactured and tested to navigate and control weeds in rice paddy fields, but a speed was so slow, and thus second engine-type prototype was developed. A working acreage for weed control has been attained at and up to 0.8 ha/day. Small and young weed seedlings were uprooted and destroyed by passive devices in between rows as well as hills. This robot was smoothly navigated in between rows on behalf of the guidance under camera and sensor systems and control weeds with mechanical by the use of implements such as passive rotary weeders and then weeds would be cut and buried into the soils. Also muddy water was generated during operation which was none penetrated by light for weed germination to occur. The authors concluded that the robotic was an effective alternative implement to control weeds in lowland rice paddy as long as this tool was systematically introduced into the rice fields at three time intervals, viz. 15-20 days, 25-30days, and 35-40 days after transplanting of rice seedlings.

Background: A phase II clinical trial of the comparison between eribulin plus gemcitabine (EG) and paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (PG) as first-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) found that the EG regimen was less neurotoxic, but was similar in efficacy to the PG regimen. In the present study, we analyzed functional assessment of cancer therapy-taxane (FACT-taxane) questionnaires from patients in this clinical trial to determine their quality of life (QoL). Methods: QoL was assessed using the Korean version of the FACT-taxane questionnaires. After baseline assessment, QoL was assessed every 2 cycles for 12 cycles and every 3 cycles thereafter. The linear mixed model was used to evaluate the difference in QoL between the EG and PG arms. Results: Of the 118 enrolled patients, 117 responded to the FACT-taxane questionnaires at baseline, 1 in the PG arm did not. Baseline QoL scores were not different between the EG and PG arms. During treatment, taxane subscale scores were significantly higher in the PG arm than in the EG arm after 2-13 cycles of chemotherapy (all P hat patients in the PG arm had earlier and more severe neuropathic symptoms than those in the EG arm (P taxel as first-line chemotherapy for MBC.
