Landslide susceptibility mapping is the first step in regional hazard management as it helps to understand the spatial distribution of the probability of slope failure in an *** attempt is made to map the landslide susceptibility in Tevankarai Ar subwatershed,Kodaikkanal,india using binary logistic regression *** Information System is used to prepare the database of the predictor variables and landslide inventory map,which is used to build the spatial model of landslide *** model describes the relationship between the dependent variable(presence and absence of landslide) and the independent variables selected for study(predictor variables) by the best fitting function.A forward stepwise logistic regression model using maximum likelihood estimation is used in the regression *** inventory of 84 landslides and cells within a buffer distance of 10m around the landslide is used as the dependent ***,slope,aspect,plan curvature,profile curvature,land use,soil,topographic wetness index,proximity to roads and proximity to lineaments are taken as independent *** constant and the coefficient of the predictor variable retained by the regression model are used to calculate the probability of slope failure and analyze the effect of each predictor variable on landslide occurrence in thestudy *** model shows that the most significant parameter contributing to landslides is *** other significant parameters are profile curvature,soil,road,wetness index and *** predictive logistic regression model is validated using temporal validation data-set of known landslide locations and shows an accuracy of 85.29 %.

The water chemistry of Bhimtal Lake revealed the dominance of Ca￣(2+) and HCO_3￣- *** lake water chemistry is controlled by the dominance of Ca-Mg silicate weathering(mainly pumpellyite and epidote-bearing rocks) supported by anthropogenic activity involving extensive road cutting and house holding activities, increased industrialization in the catchment area of the lake. On the basis of phosphate values. a transitional mesotrophic-eutrophic conditions exist in this *** observed chemical data of the Bhimtal Lake was used to predict the mineral assemblages in the carbonate and alumino-silicate system. It demonstrates that the calcite and dolomite are the possible minerals which are in equilibrium with the lake water system and that the lake water is in the range of stability of kaolinite.

The collision between and indian and Asian plate has not only give rise to some of the highest mountains of the world but also is responsible for the various global phenomena associated with paleoclimate and paleo\|*** indirect approaches have been employed in order to constrain the age of initiation of this collision (Beck et al 1995,*** 1996,Dewey 1989).Still it is being quoted anywhere between ca.60 to 40Ma in the *** main reason for the poor constraints on the age of the initiation of the collision is unavailability of a direct method to date *** this paper we present the Ar\|Ar ages of the ophiolites from the Indus Suture,Ladakh and discuss the scope of this approach in constraining the age of the collision more narrowly.1\ Samples and methodology\;Several ophiolitic melange occurrences have been reported belonging to the Indus Suture in the Ladakh *** are characterized by the typical oceanic floor assemblages like chert,limestone etc mixed with the peridotites,serpentinites,dolerites,basalts,and pillow lavas (*** 1990).We present here the 40 Ar\| 39 Ar age spectra of two volcanics from the Sumdo Nala section of central Ladakh and one pillow lava from Chiktan,which is about 100km west of the Sumdo *** samples were analysed using Ar\|Ar step heating method following the procedures described by Venketesan et al.1993.

Community-based natural resource management in northeast india has a long history. Indigenous knowledge and adaptation are the collective information, with improvement from generation to generation. The expectation is that under community control, local expertise on biodiversity will play a significant role in natural resource management through traditional practices. This paper discusses the characteristics and application of the traditional ecological knowledge of aboriginal peoples in northeast india and its role in natural resource management. Examples are provided in two different eco-cultural landscapes, i.e., Demazong (the Buddhist eco-cultural landscape in Sikkim Himalaya) and the Apatani eco-cultural landscape in Arunachal Pradesh, which illustrate the utility value of traditional ecological knowledge in sustainable natural resource management. Both eco-cultural landscapes are indeed very complex and highly evolved systems with high levels of economic and ecological efficiencies. The paper concludes that traditional ecological knowledge systems and institutions could serve as entry points into the sustainable utilization and management of natural resources. This could be achieved through the exploration of the cultural practices of the local people and integrating useful aspects into the modern natural resource management expertise. With rapidly depleting biodiversity in the developing tropic regions, there is a greater utilization today than ever before of the value of respecting the "Sacred" as a tool towards better conservation of natural resources.

Introduction\;A suture zone in an orogenic belt marks the paleo\|plate boundaries with its characteristic ocean floor assemblages. In Himalayas, the best and most spectacular example of the continent\|continent collision orogeny, the suture zone can be traced all along the 2500km long mountain chain and marks the boundary between the indian and Asian plates. Ladakh region of North\|West Himalaya probably presents the best preserved history of pre\|, syn\|, and post\|collision signatures. It has rocks ranging from Precambrian passive margin sediments to the post collision molasses. The suture zone in Ladakh, referred to as the Indus Suture Zone (ISZ), is characterized by the several occurrences of ophiolitic melange. (M.P. Searle et al, 1987) .Apart from these, various linear belts of the volcanic rocks have been found in the Indus Suture Zone, though their inter relationship is not very clear (*** 1990).

The present study was conducted in subtropical humid forests of Meghalaya to study the distributional pattern of species, floristic composition, community structure and tree population *** fragments of varying sizes(0.5 ha, 1 ha, 2 ha and 5 ha) were used in the *** of the forest fragments are distributed within the same altitudinal range, and had similar rainfall and temperature *** forest fragments were sampled using random quadrats to analyze the impact of fragment size on tree diversity and population *** were used to compare the dispersion pattern of plant species, species diversity among fragments, and the heterogeneity and homogeneity of the fragments.A total of 45 tree species were recorded from all the fragments and simple correlation showed that the species richness was positively related to fragment size(n = 4, P<0.05).Other measures such as stand density, basal cover, diversity and dominance indices were unrelated to fragment *** canopy was composed mainly of Castonopsis indica, ***, Schima khasiana and Engelhardtia spicata in all of the fragments.A majority of woody tree species were contagiously distributed which made the forest community highly patchy in *** values of Sorensen's similarity index and high values of Whittaker's β-diversity index between the fragments suggest marked difference in the species composition among the *** maximum stand density, basal area, Shannon diversity index and Simpson dominance index was recorded in a 5-ha *** in lower girth classes(15-55 cm circumference at breast height, CBH) accounted for 52-86% of stand density in all fragments except in 0.5-ha fragments where middle girth class(55-95 cm CBH) accounted for 47% of the total stand *** overall density of seedlings, saplings and adult trees formed a pyramidal structure, indicating that the period between the sapling and adult stage was a critical stage in tree life cycles, as the
