Factors Associated with High Blood Pressure and Diabetes Cormobidity in Littoral Department of Benin, in 2023

Introduction: The number of people suffering from diabetes and hypertension (HBP) is increasing worldwide and particularly in sub-saharan Africa, despite the fact that they are preventable. The aim of our study is to determine the factors associated with hypertension and diabetes comorbidity in the Department of Littoral in 2023. study setting and Methods: Our study took place in the Department of Littoral in Benin. It was a cross-sectional general population study conducted over a three-month period from April 10 to July 10, 2023. It included subjects aged 18 and over with or without a history of hypertension and/or diabetes. The sampling method was probabilistic and the technique used was a WHO three-stage cluster survey. The dependent variable is comorbidity of hypertension and diabetes. A logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with hypertension-diabetes comorbidity. Results: The study population was predominantly female (59.9%). The mean age was 44 ± 17. A total of 48 (8.8%) of the subjects in the study suffered from both diabetes and hypertension. Factors associated with comorbidity of hypertension and diabetes were age ≥ 50 years (OR: 5.48;95% CI: 2.69 - 12.20;p = 0.001);male sex (OR: 2.98;95% CI: 1.39 - 6.46;p = 0.005);too much salt or salty sauce consumed (OR: 6.06;95% CI: 1.56 - 22.20;p = 0.034);abdominal obesity (OR: 6.12;95% CI: 2.79 - 14.3;p = 0.001). Conclusion: Hypertension and diabetes are emerging as major public health problems in Benin. The main associated factors were age, gender, the amount of salt or salty sauce consumed and abdominal obesity. A response is urgently needed to act on the factors identified in order to avoid possible complications and an increase in prevalence.

Use of the “Veda-Lab Easy Reader+” for the Determination of T3, T4 and TsH Hormones in the Mountainous Population of Benin: Case of Natitingou

The thyroid, an endocrine gland located at the base of the neck, produces thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4)). The production of these hormones is possible by iodine and other nutrients such as selenium and certain vitamins. To assess the thyroid disturbances in the mountain population of Benin, a survey was conducted in Natitingou, a mountain town located in the department of Atacora, in the northwest of Benin, on a sample of thirty (30) adults (15 men and 15 women), most of whom are educated. The results of the questionnaire revealed that 43% of the surveyed population acknowledged having knowledge on the mentioned subject and have dietary habits based on the consumption of seafood, and also legumes (20%). The examination of the serum results of the dosage of T3, T4 and TsH hormones revealed cases of thyroid disturbances in the region (36.32% in men and 44.98% in women). The analysis of a comparative table including the “VEDALAB Easy Reader+” and five (05) other readers, presents the performance, reading techniques, principles, advantages and disadvantages of each device. Pending further studies, some recommendations were made at the end of this study to the academic authorities regarding probable cases of dysthyroidism for which additional examinations are required and an awareness for the improvement of dietary habits.

Characterization of Aquifers in Crystalline and Crystallophyll Basement Zones Using the Electrical Resistivity Method (Trails and Electrical soundings) in the Gagnoa Region, (Central-Western Côte d’Ivoire)

Introduction: Located in the central-western part of Côte d’Ivoire, the subsoil of the Gagnoa region is made up of sedimentary volcano formations and granitoids with developed fracturing. This complex Precambrian basement contains most of the region’s water resources. This is at the origin of the high failure rate during the various hydrogeological prospecting campaigns. Methodology: The database consists of resistivities from 42 holes and 51 trails drilled as part of the implementation of high-throughput drilling in the study area. The objective of this study is to deepen the knowledge of the fissured basement by interpreting profile curves and electrical soundings. It will be a question of classifying the different types of anomalies obtained on the profiles and their shapes. The orientation of the lineaments observed on the profiles was determined. Results: The interpretation of the geophysical data revealed various anomalies, the main ones being of the CC (Conductor Compartment) and CEDP (Contact between two bearings) types. These types of anomalies are mainly expressed in various forms: the “V”, “W” and “U” shapes. From these anomalies and the appearance of the electrical profiles, lineaments and their orientations were identified with N90-100, N130-140, N170-180 as major orientations. Conclusion: These results could contribute to a better understanding of the fractured environment of the Gagnoa region.

A 64-year-old woman with no particular history presented with chronic pelvic pain since November 2021. The ultrasound performed showed multiple right ovarian cystic ranging from 0.4 to 4 cm on the long axis. she underwent a right salpingo-oophorectomy in May 2022. The anatomical pathology result is in favor of a papillary carcinoma developed on stroma ovarii. No adjuvant treatment was necessary since the tumor was well limited, without capsular rupture, stage IA. The thyroid test was normal. The patient is currently being monitored. There is no sign of recurrence 20 months after surgery.

Characterisation of Human-Wildlife Conflicts around the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

The history of mankind contains so many illustrations of well-classified and violent struggles against various animals over crop production in agricultural fields, attacks on human life or competition in order to have access to certain natural resources. The aim of this study is to characterise the human-wildlife conflicts that occur around the KBNP, especially with regard to primates. surveys were carried out in 260 households selected using the snowball method. The results showed that human-wildlife conflicts around the KBNP are characterised by the destruction of crops in riparian fields by monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas, the destruction of houses, physical attacks and zoonoses. Despite the conservation and protection measures for wildlife and local populations put in place by the Park’s managers, conflicts between local populations and the Park’s wild animals are still visible. These conflicts lead to the detention of wild animals by local people roaming in the villages and to poaching on the Park’s boundaries. The weakness of the community management policy on the part of the park managers and the resentment of the indigenous peoples towards the restriction of their access to natural resources are the major constraints on the sustainable management of conflicts between the local populations and the wild animals in the KBNP. The strategies for the sustainable resolution of human-wildlife conflicts around the KBNP must be geared towards and integrated into a community conservation approach.

Granulometry Assessment of Lom Pangar Dam sediments (East-Cameroon)

The Lom Pangar dam, the largest reservoir in Cameroon with a storage capacity of 6 km3 and a 30 MW hydropower plant, primarily regulates the hydrologic regime of the sanaga River to maintain hydropower efficiency during dry seasons and enhance downstream hydropower plant performance. Understanding and managing sediments are crucial for the sustainability of dams, as indicated by numerous studies. This study assessed the granulometry of the sediments transported across the reservoir. For that purpose, 6 samples of fresh sediments were collected in the lacustrine and transitional sections of the reservoir using the standard method. Particles size was assessed using the laser diffusion technic after a 3 mm sieving. Various granulometric parameters were derived from the literature to analyze and characterize those sediments. Results show that silts are more than 70% of particles size and range between 2.19 - 60.26 µm. size distribution also shows the same trend with D75 less than 51 µm. This is confirmed by the low values of Inman skewness skΦ (−0.168 to 0.303). The sorting index s0 ranges from 0.31 to 0.53 µm, showing a very well-sorted sediments, aligning with low values of Krumbein index (0.906 - 1.683) that express the low heterometry of the particles. The consequence on the dam will be a quick clogging of the bottom of the reservoir. Their pH varies from 7.0 to 7.5. It also appears that the sandy fraction trend is higher in the right bank of the dam and reaches 22% on the right bank of Pangar River due to crystalline geology. Fraction greater than 3000 µm is negligible. The management of the dam has to keep attention to these results as siltation may close the safety outlet of the dam, damage turbines, and provoke recurrent technical and safety issues. Further, the clogging of the bottom of the reservoir may lead to an ecological problem with the limitation of hyporheic flow. Eudragit<sup>®sup>-PEG Nanoparticles: Physicochemical Characterization and Interfacial Tension Measurements

The objectives of this study are to understand the mechanisms involved in the stabilization of water/oil interfaces by polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) (Eudragit®). Eudragit L100 NPs of various sizes and Zeta potentials were studied and compared at a water/cyclohexane model interface using a droplet tensiometer (Tracker Teclis, Longessaigne, France). The progressive interfacial adsorption of the NPs in the aqueous phase was monitored by tensiometry. The model interface was maintained and observed in a drop tensiometer, analyzed via axisymmetric drop shape analysis (ADsA), to determine the interfacial properties. Given the direct relationship between the stability of Pickering emulsions (emulsions stabilized by solid nanoparticles) and the interfacial properties of these layers, different nanoparticle systems were compared. specifically, Eudragit NPs of different sizes were examined. Moreover, the reduction of the Zeta potential with PEG-6000 induces partial aggregation of the NPs (referred to as NP flocs), significantly impacting the stability of the interfacial layer. Dynamic surface tension measurements indicate a significant decrease in interfacial tension with Eudragit® nanoparticles (NPs). This reduction correlates with the size of the NPs, highlighting that this parameter does not operate in isolation. Other factors, such as the contact angle and wettability of the nanoparticles, also play a critical role. Notably, larger NPs further diminished the interfacial tension. This study enhances our understanding of the stability of Pickering emulsions stabilized by Eudragit® L100 polymeric nanoparticles.

Introduction: In serodiscordant couples, sharing serostatus is a crucial step in the HIV risk management process. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with serostatus sharing among HIV serodiscordant couples in the city of Parakou. setting and methods: This study was carried out in the city of Parakou, capital of northern Benin. It was a descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study with non-probability sampling for convenience. socio-demographic data, as well as data on antecedents, behaviours, social and marital life, were collected using a questionnaire gave to the participants. Clinical and therapeutic data were collected from patients’ medical records and follow-up charts. Data were analyzed and processed using R 4.3.1 software. The significance level was set at 5%, and logistic regression was used to identify potential predictors of shared serostatus among serodiscordant couples in the city of Parakou in 2022. Results: A total of 299 participants in long-term serodiscordant relationships were included in our study. The average age of the subjects was 37.55 ± 10.25 years. Women were the infected partner in 80.27% of cases. The most common level of education was secondary (33.45%). Most respondents (230 subjects, 76.92%) were married. The average duration of the couple’s relationship was 121.68 months ± 96.32. The most frequent screening circumstances were: Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) (50.84%) and hospital screening (26.09%). The infected partner shared his or her serostatus with his or her spouse in 47.83% of cases. Potential predictors of serostatus sharing within the couple were: marital status (p Conclusion: The sharing of serostatus within serodiscordant couples needs to be managed in a way that takes into account the social and marital characteristics of the couple.
