Outcomes of surgical correction of Peyronie’s disease with plaque excision and grafting: Comparison of testicular tunica vaginalis graft versus bovine pericardium graft

Knowledge of the band gap and transmission and reflection spectrum of a photonic crystal is essential elements for their design. A graphical interface that quickly determines the banding pattern and spectrum based on the Plane Wave Method (PWM) and coupled modes method (CMM) respectively is created. It is used to explore the behavior of a Bragg structure with the ability to easily vary the important parameters such as refractive indices, number and thickness of layers.

Diabetes Risk Factor and Its Relationship to Increasing Coronavirus (COVID-19) Mortality Rate in United States in 2019-2022: An Epidemiological Study

As an effort to understand the effect of diabetes on the increasing rate of COVID-19 infection, we embarked upon a detailed statistical analysis of various datasets that include COVID-19 infection and mortality rate, diabetes and diseases that may contribute to the severity and risk factor of diabetes in individuals and this impact on COVID-19 and the mortality rate. These diseases include respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity. Equally significant is the statistical analysis on ethnicity, age, and sex on COVID-19 infection as well as mortality rate. Their possible contributions to increasing the severity and risk factor of diabetes as a risk to mortality to individuals who have COVID-19. Objectives: The ultimate objectives of this investigation are as follow: 1) Is there a risk factor of diabetes on COVID-19 infection and increasing mortality rate? 2) To what extent do other disease conditions that include, obesity, heart failure, and respiratory diseases influence the severity and risk factor of diabetes on increasing COVID-19 infection and mortality rate? 3) To what extent does age, race, and gender increase the mortality of COVID-19 and increase the severity and risk factor of diabetes on COVID-19 mortality rate? 4) How and why COVID-19 virus increases the risk of diabetes in children? 5) Diabetes and COVID-19: Who is most at Risk? Lastly, understanding the misconception of COVID-19 and diabetes.

Effects of GPU Structuring on Accelerated Schemes of LBM and Classical CFD for Flow over a Flat Plate

Current trends on CFD （Computational Fluid Dynamics） along with high performance computing are moving towards using modem GPUs （Graphics Processing Units） in order to achieve substantial execution speedup. Consequently, it is definitely crucial to have some understanding about execution time of different computational methods and parallelization procedures. In this study, two GPU accelerated schemes namely LBM （Lattice Boltzmann Method） and SFV （Stream Function-Vorticity） formulation are investigated and compared for simulation of flow over a fiat plate. The comparisons are based on solvers runtime and speedup and GPU type of structuring. On study the authors found that although the runtime for SFV formulation is less than LBM, LBM has greater potential to obtain higher speedup by using modern GPUs like NVIDIA GTX 480. In addition, a performance sensitivity is done to investigate for different GPU type of structures as a considerable parameter. The difference between GPU runtime in optimum and regular conditions indicates that using one-dimensional structuring can improve the GPU performance about 50 percent.

Isolation of Main Genes Involved in Flowering of Saffron （Crocus sativus L.） in Order to Study Effective Flowering Protein

Saffron （Crocus sativus L.） always is grown for using its flowers in nutrient industry, color industry and healthy compounds due to its flowers and specially stigmas. Because of its expensive flowers, surveying and recognizing on effective genes for flowering is very important and its results can help us to control rate and timing of flowering at an early stage of flowering. The gene and gene state meant Pistillata like MADS box （PIC2） were surveyed for recognizing its molecular mechanism. The molecular sequence at the genes has high similarity to members of family MADS that is a factor for controls of protein at flowering stage. PIC2 gene was studied by bioinforrnatics resources. Primers were designed for replicating the gene and DNA and RNA were extracted from saffron＇s leaves. The gene＇s eDNA was built by recopying enzyme and used such a pattern for replicating gene PIC2 at polymerase chain reactions （PCR）. Segments were replicated such 900 eDNA pair-nucleotides and a segment such 2,100 of DNA＇s pair-nucleotides. The gene codes a protein that was composed of 210 amino acids that has MADS sequence box. Analysis of protein＇s molecular structure and homological modeling of the protein indicated that it has a regular structure.

Severe Acute Malnutrition among Hospitalized Children, Aden, Yemen

Objective: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality among children under 5 years of age worldwide. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of SAM among hospitalized children at Al-Wahda teaching hospital in Aden, Yemen. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional hospital based study was conducted on 622 hospitalized children (336 males and 286 females) below 6 years of age during 2012-2013. SAM was defined as a very low weight for height (below-3 Z scores of the median WHO growth standards). Results: SAM was diagnosed in 622 children with prevalence rate of 5.2% from total 11,941 admissions during 24 months period. A higher proportion of patients were marasmus 586 (94.2%) and only 36 (5.8%) were kwashiorkor. Marasmus was common in <1 year of age in 347 (59.2%) while kwashiorkor between 1 - 5 years in 22 (61.1%) patients. Males (54%) predominated females (46%) with a male to female ratio of 1.18:1 in SAM but with no significant difference in sex. The highest comorbidities with SAM were gastroenteritis 442 (71.1%) and 103 pneumonia (16.6%) with a total cure of 492 (79.1%) patients. Conclusion: This high prevalence of SAM among males who were <5 years of age with high risk of gastroenteritis and pneumonia added weight to the urgent need to improve the nutritional status of children.

NavApp:A Mobile App as a Master's Thesis

This paper illustrates a project work made by graduate students in computer engineering at University of Pavia. The project concerns a mobile indoor navigation application, called NavApp, for the mobility of pedestrians inside a building. NavApp has been deployed in a real environment, namely the library of the University of Pavia. It supports the staff in picking, storing, moving and inventory operations. Indoor navigation relies on a cloud service that fuses data of magnetic fields, Wi-Fi and beacons, called Indoor Atlas. NavApp has a sufficient positioning precision(2 meters) with the relevant advance of being able of working without any pre-deployed infrastructure, a key point in an ancient library with many million books.

Detection of HER-2/neu Amplification on Fine Needle Aspirates of Breast Cancer Using Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization

The accuracy of diagnostic assays for HER-2/neu in breast cancer is extremely important as HER-2/neu status is essential in tailoring adjuvant and/or neoadjuvant treatment in every patient. FNAC is widely practiced in Egypt in preoperative diagnosis of breast cancer for its low cost and high diagnostic accuracy. Since the determination of HER-2/neu protein expression on cytological preparations was previously found to be unreliable for clinical use, we opted for the assessment of HER-2/neu status in fine needle aspirates using FISH. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of HER-2/neu status assessment by FISH on fine needle aspirates of breast cancers by comparing the results with IHC and FISH on FFPE tissue sections obtained from corresponding surgically resected specimens. Fine needle aspirates from 40 breast cancer patients with pathologically confirmed breast cancer were included in the study. They were submitted for HER-2/neu evaluation by FISH. After surgery, the corresponding FFPE sections were evaluated for HER-2/neu by FISH and by IHC. FNAs from 11 cases proved to be amplified by FISH, while 29 cases were not amplified. Apart from two cases that showed lack of signals, all specimens evaluated by FISH on the corresponding FFPE sections showed matched results. The Measurement of Agreement between FISH on FNAs and FISH on FFPE sections was 86.7%, while that between FISH on FNAs and IHC was 72.5%. The high concordance rate in the present study between FISH evaluation of HER-2/neu gene amplification on FNAC samples and their corresponding FFPE samples indicate that FISH may be a reliable technique for HER-2/neu assessment on FNAs. Furthermore, FISH on FNAs gave us better hybridization signals than their corresponding FFPE tissue sections. Finally, we also conclude that all score (2+) cases by IHC should be reevaluated by FISH which is crucial for the patient management.
