Low-temperature synthesis of Fe_(2)(MoO_(4))_(3) nanosheets: A cathode for sodium ion batteries with kinetics enhancement

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are alternatives to lithium ion batteries (LIBs), and offer some significant benefits such as cost reduction and a lower environmental impact;however, to compete with LIBs, further research is required to improve the performance of SIBs. In this study, an orthorhombic Na super ionic conductor structural Fe_(2)(MoO_(4))_(3) nanosheet with amorphous-crystalline core-shell alignment was synthesized using a facile low-temperature water-vapor-assisted solid-state reaction and applied as a cathode material for SIBs. The obtained material has a well-defined three-dimensional stacking structure, and exhibits a high specific capacity of 87.8 mAh·g^(−1) at a current density of 1 C = 91 mA·g^(−1) after 1,000 cycles, which is due to the considerable contribution of extra surface-related reaction such as the pseudo-capacitive process. This material shows significantly improved cycling and rated behavior as well as enhanced performance under high- and low-temperature conditions, as compared to the same materials prepared by the conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction. This enhancement is explained by the unique morphology in combination with the improved kinetics of the electrochemical reaction due to its lower charge transfer resistance and higher sodium ion conductivity.

Clinical analysis of risk factors contributing to recurrence of pterygium after excision and graft surgery

Aim: To find the risk factors related to the reproliferation of the pterygial tissue after excision and graft ***: Charts of 130 eyes of 130 patients who had pterygial excision from March 2006 to April 2011 were reviewed. Preoperative pterygium morphology, surgical methods, and adjunctive treatments were statistically analyzed for their relationship with ***: During the follow-up period, recurrence was observed in 20 eyes(15.4%). None of the preoperative morphologic features were affected the rate of the recurrence. However, an age hat intraoperative mitomycin C(MMC)(P =0.072, OR 0.298, 95% CI 0.080-1.115)decreased the rate of recurrence. CONCLUSION: Younger age is a risk factor for reproliferation of pterygial tissue after excision and amniotic membrane transplantation(AMT) are less effective in preventing recurrence of pterygium after excision based on the comparison between conjunctival autograft and AMT. Intraoperative MMC application and conjunctival autograft reduce recurrence.

Anti-MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity of Salsola komarovii Iljin extract and its solvent fractions

Objective: To investigate matrix metalloproteinases(MMP)-2 and MMP-9 inhibitory effect of Salsola komarovii Iljin, an edible halophyte with health beneficial ***: Salsola komarovii crude extracts(SKI), and solvent(n-hexane, 85% aq. MeOH, n-BuOH, and H2O) fractionated extracts of SKI were prepared. Gelatin zymography was carried out to observe MMP enzymatic activity. The release of the MMP enzymes was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Expression of MMPs in m RNA and protein level were investigated by polymerase chain reaction analysis and immunoblotting, ***: SKI and SKI fractions inhibited active MMP-2 and MMP-9 amount in the treated cell culture medium. Also, SKI suppressed the release of MMP-2 and MMP-9 from stimulated HT1080 human fibrosarcoma cells. Furthermore, SKI suppressed the m RNA and protein expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9. SKI fractions showed parallel effects except for H2O fraction which did not yield any significant MMP inhibitory effect. Among fractions, 85% aq. Me OH was the most active fraction to inhibit both the enzymatic effect and expression of MMP-2 and ***: SKI may contain potential MMP release inhibitory compounds. Salsola komarovii is a promising source of compounds against MMP and could be utilized in the development of antitumor agents.

To overcome the serious technological issues affecting lithium-sulfur(Li-S) batteries,such as sluggish sulfur redox kinetics and the detrimental shuttle effect,heterostructure engineering has been investigated as a strategy to effectively capture soluble lithium polysulfide intermediates and promote their conversion reaction by integrating highly polar metal oxides with catalytically active metals ***,to fully exploit the outstanding properties of heterostructure-based composites,their detailed structure and interfacial contacts should be designed ***,optimally arranged TiO_(2)and MoS_(2)-based heterostructures(TiO_(2)@MoS_(2)) are fabricated on carbon cloth as a multifunctional interlayer to efficiently trap polysulfide intermediates and accelerate their redox *** to the synergistic effects between TiO_(2)and MoS_(2)and the uniform heterointerface distribution that induces the ideally oriented built-in electric field,Li-S batteries with TiO_(2)@MoS_(2)interlayers exhibit high rate capability(601 mA h g^(-1)at 5 C),good cycling stability(capacity-fade rate of 0.067% per cycle over 500 cycles at2 C),and satisfactory areal capacity(5.2 mA h cm^(-2)) under an increased sulfur loading of 5.2 mg cm^(-2).Moreover,by comparing with a MoS_(2)@TiO_(2)interlayer composed of reversely arranged heterostructures,the effect of the built-in electric field’s direction on the electrocatalytic reactions of polysulfide intermediates is thoroughly investigated for the first *** superior electrocatalytic activities of the rationally arranged TiO_(2)@MoS_(2)interlayer demonstrate the importance of optimizing the built-in electric field of heterostructures for producing high-performance Li-S batteries.

As a new class of two-dimensional materials, two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures constructed from metal chalcogenides (MCs) have been gaining tremendous attention due to their unprecedented physical and chemical phenomena, mainly originated from their distinct structural features such as composition, architecture type, spatial arrangement of each component, crystal structure, exposed facet and interface, dimensionality in their heterostructures. Towards the realization of practical applications, synthetic approaches need a rational design with a variety of architecture types including laterally-combined, vertically-aligned, and conformally-coated 2D MC heterostructures. Among various synthetic routes, solution-based synthesis is thought of as an alternative to fabrication through high-cost setups since it can control those structural features in a cheap fashion. This review presents recent progress on solution-based synthesis to produce various 2D MC heterostructures with a focus on the synthetic fundamentals in terms of thermodynamic and kinetic aspects related to the growth mechanism. Four different synthetic approaches are reviewed: seeded growth, cation exchange reaction, colloidal atomic layer deposition, direct synthesis including one-step process and modified electrochemical method. We also provide some representative applications of 2D MC heterostructures and their hybrid composites in various fields including optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, catalysis, and battery. Finally, we offer an insight into challenges and future directions in a synthetic improvement of 2D MC heterostructures.

BACKGROUND Recently,the exclusive use of mesenchymal stem cell(MSC)-secreted molecules,called secretome,rather than cells,has been evaluated for overcoming the limitations of cell-based therapy,while maintaining its ***,the use of na?ve secretome may not fully satisfy the specificity of each ***,it appears to be more advantageous to use the functionally reinforced secretome through a series of processes involving physico-chemical adjustments or genetic manipulation rather than to the use na?ve *** To determine the therapeutic potential of the secretome released from miR-122-transfected adipose-derived stromal cells(ASCs).METHODS We collected secretory materials released from ASCs that had been transfected with antifibrotic miR-122(MCM)and compared their antifibrotic effects with those of the na?ve secretome(CM).MCM and CM were intravenously administered to the mouse model of thioacetamide-induced liver fibrosis,and their therapeutic potentials were *** MCM infusion provided higher therapeutic potential in terms of:(A)Reducing collagen content in the liver;(B)Inhibiting proinflammatory cytokines;and(C)Reducing abnormally elevated liver enzymes than the infusion of the na?ve *** proteomic analysis of MCM also indicated that the contents of antifibrotic proteins were significantly elevated compared to those in the na?ve *** We could,thus,conclude that the secretome released from miR-122-transfected ASCs has higher antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties than the na?ve *** miR-122 transfection into ASCs provides a specific way of potentiating the antifibrotic properties of ASC secretome,it could be considered as an enhanced method for reinforcing secretome effectiveness.

A Remark on Strong Law of Large Numbers for Weighted U-Statistics

Let {wn,i1,i2 im ; 1 ≤ i1 〈 i2 〈 …… 〈im 〈 n, n ≥ m} be a matrix array of real numbers. Motivated by a result of Choi and Sung （1987）, in this note we are concerned with establishing a strong law of large numbers for weighted U-statistics with kernel h of degree m. We show that whenever SUP n≥m max1〈i1〈i2〈…〈im≤｜wn i1,i2 i,im｜〈∞, where 0 = Eh（X1, X2,..., Xm）. The proof of this result is based on a new general result on complete convergence, which is a fundamental tool, for array of real-valued random variables under some mild conditions.

Optimization of ionic liquid-based microwave-assisted extraction of polyphenolic content from Peperomia pellucida (L) kunth using response surface methodology

Objective: To optimize the ionic liquid based microwave-assisted extraction (IL-MAE) of polyphenolic content from Peperomia pellucida (L) Kunth. Methods: The IL-MAE factors as experimental design parameters, including microwave power, extraction time, ionic liquid concentration, and liquid–solid ratio had been involved. Response surface methodology and Box–Behnken design were used to obtain predictive model (multivariate quadratic regression equation) and optimization of the extraction process. The response surface was analyzed by using the yields of total polyphenolic content as response value. Results: Based on the obtained results the optimum extraction condition, including microwave power of 30% Watts, extraction time of 18.5 min, the ionic liquid concen-tration of 0.79 mol/L, and the liquid–solid ratio of 10.72 mL/g 1-Buthyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim]BF4) as a solvent was selected. The regression model was obtained to predicts the yields from Peperomia pellucida:Y = 30.250 – 1.356X1 + 2.655X2 + 2.252X3 – 0.565X4 + 0.990 X1X3 – 8.172 X1X4 – 3.439 X3X4 – 4.178 X12 – 3.210 X32 – 6.786 X42 – 7.290 X12X3 + 5.575 X1X32 – 4.843 X32X4 with R2 = 0.82519. Scale-up confirmation test was obtained the maximum yields of total polyphenolics content with the amount of 31.1725μg GAE/g. Conclusions: The IL-MAE method produced a higher extraction polyphenolic and performed rapidly, easily and efficiently.

CD24 expression predicts distant metastasis in extrahepatic bile duct cancer

Aim: To evaluate the prognostic significance of CD24 expression in patients undergoing adjuvant chemoradiotherapy for extrahepatic bile duct (EHBD) cancer. METHODS: Eighty-four patients with EHBD cancer who underwent curative resection followed by adjuvant chemoradiotherapy were enrolled in this study. Postoperative radiotherapy was delivered to the tumor bed and regional lymph nodes up to a median of 40 Gy (range: 40-56 Gy). All patients also received fluoropyrimidine chemotherapy for radiosensitization during radiotherapy. CD24 expression was assessed with immunohistochemical staining on tissue microarray. Clinicopathologic factors as well as CD24 expression were evaluated in multivariate analysis for clinical outcomes including loco-regional recurrence, distant metastasisfree and overall survival. RESULTS: CD24 was expressed in 36 patients (42.9%). CD24 expression was associated with distant metastasis, but not with loco-regional recurrence nor with overall survival. The 5-year distant metastasis-free survival rates were 55.1% and 29.0% in patients with negative and positive expression, respectively (P=0.0100). On multivariate analysis incorporating N stage, histologic differentiation and CD24 expression, N stage was the only significant factor predicting distant metastasis-free survival (P=0.0089), while CD24 expression had borderline significance (P=0.0733). In subgroup analysis, CD24 expression was significantly associated with 5-year distant metastasis-free survival in node-positive patients (38.4% with negative expression vs 0% with positive expression, P=0.0110), but not in nodenegative patients (62.0% with negative expression vs 64.0% with positive expression,P=0.8599). CONCLUSION: CD24 expression was a significant predictor of distant metastasis for patients undergoing curative resection followed by adjuvant chemoradiotherapy especially for node-positive EHBD cancer.
