Peri-articular elbow fracture fixations with magnesium implants and a review of current literature: A case series

BACKGROUND In recent years,the use of Magnesium alloy implants have gained renewed popularity,especially after the first commercially available ConformitéEuropéenne approved Magnesium implant became available(MAGNEZIX®CS,Syntellix)in *** To document our clinical and radiographical outcomes using magnesium implants in treating peri-articular elbow *** Our paper was based on a retrospective case series ***-operatively,a standardized surgical technique was utilized for insertion of the magnesium ***–operatively,clinic visits were standardized and physical exam findings,functional scores,and radiographs were obtained at each *** complications were *** Five patients with 6 fractures were recruited(2 coronoid,3 radial head and 1 capitellum).The mean patient age and length of follow up was 54.6 years and 11 months *** fractures healed,and none exhibited loss of reduction or complications requiring revision *** patient developed synovitis of the elbow joint or suffered electrolytic reactions when titanium implants were used *** Although there is still a paucity of literature available on the subject and further studies are required,magnesium implants appear to be a feasible tool for fixation of peri-articular elbow fractures with promising results in our *** In recent years,the use of Magnesium alloy implants in orthopaedic surgeries have gained renewed *** from being bioabsorbable,negating the need for implant removal,magnesium also has good osteoconductive properties[1-4].Biomechanically,it exhibits greater biomechanical strength than any pre-existing polymers,and reduces the stress-shielding effect associated with titanium and steel implants as it has a Young’s modulus closer to bone[4].Currently,the main utility of magnesium implants in the orthopaedic community is within the foot and ankle community where satisfactory results have been reported

Survival of living organisms is fully dependent on their maintenance of genome integrity,being permanently threatened by replication stress in proliferating *** the plant DNA damage response(DDR)regulator SOG1 has been demonstrated to cope with replication defects,accumulating evidence points to other pathways functioning independent of ***,we report the roles of the Arabidopsis E2FA and EF2B transcription factors,two well-characterized regulators of DNA replication,in plant response to replication *** a combination of reverse genetics and chromatin immunoprecipitation approaches,we show that E2FA and E2FB share many target genes with SOG1,providing evidence for their involvement in the *** of double-and triple-mutant combinations revealed that E2FB,rather than E2FA,plays the most prominent role in sustaining plant growth in the presence of replication defects,either operating antagonistically or synergistically with ***,SOG1 aids in overcoming the replication defects of E2FA/E2FB-deficient ***,our data reveal a complex transcriptional network controlling the replication stress response in which E2Fs and SOG1 act as key regulatory factors.

The use of non-equilibrium plasmas for the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts is a field that has not been explored intensively. The main reasons for the recent increase of research activity in this field are related to the advantages that go with the technique of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition （PECVD）. The most principal of these advantages are the possibility to avoid the use of environmentally harmful solvents and the one-step nature of the procedure, making it very time and labor efficient. Non-equilibrium plasma technology, more in particular dielectric barrier discharge （DBD） technology, has been applied in this work for the synthesis of hybrid tin-silicate materials to be used as a heterogeneous catalyst in the isomerization of glucose into fructose. Atomizers, innovative devices which make it possible to inject nanosized precursor liquids into the plasma zone, are used instead of applying vapor phase techniques, where the amount of precursor is limited by the vapor pressure of the liquid. A design of experiments approach has been employed to investigate the effect of the plasma parameters, namely gas flow, frequency and power density, on the catalytic properties of the catalysts within a well-defined parameter field. It has been found that indeed these parameters, together with the molar ratio of Si/Sn, have an important influence on the activity, selectivity, and thus yield of the produced chemicals.

Late Presentation of Acardiac Twin: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Acardiac twinning or TRAP-sequence is a rare complication of monochorionic twin pregnancy. We present a case in which fetal demise of one fetus of a twin pregnancy had been wrongly diagnosed in the first trimester as a vanishing twin. This resulted in the unexpected occurrence of an acardiac twin in the third trimester, culminating in an acardiac twin with a birth weight higher than that of the normal twin. A review is presented on therapeutic opportunities including ligation of the umbilical cord under ultrasound or fetoscopy. This case report highlights the need for correct and early ultrasonographic diagnosis of chorionicity and detailed ultrasonographic follow-up of twin pregnancies.

Radiological study of the Asian coracoid process and clavicle: Implications for coracoclavicular ligament reconstruction

Purpose:Iatrogenic coracoid and clavicle fracture is a known complication of drilling bone tunnels during anatomic coracoclavicular ligament reconstruction(ACCR).This study aims to measure the dimensions of coracoid process and clavicle in an Asian population to evaluate the suitability of drilling coracoid and clavicle tunnels for ACCR in ***:Width measurements of 196 coracoids and 189 clavicles were obtained after reviewing all computed tomography(CT)scans of the shoulder performed over a 6 years *** measurements were made on the CT slice which showed the maximum cross sectional width of the coracoid *** to lateral measurements of the coracoid width were taken on an axial view,4 mm above the identified junction of the coracoid base and glenoid ***-posterior clavicle width was measured through a point directly above the midpoint of the coracoid and perpendicular to the long axis of the ***:The overall mean coracoid width was 14.8 mm±2.54 mm(range 9.2e23.3 mm)and clavicle width was 17.1 mm±2.72 mm(range 11.1e25.3 mm).Conclusion:The Asian coracoid process is smaller than its Western *** research is required to validate this conclusion as no cadaveric studies with equivalent measurement techniques have been performed on *** the potentially narrower dimensions of the Asian coracoid process,extra precautions are required to minimize the risk of iatrogenic coracoid and clavicle fractures.

Fluorescence microscopy is the method of choice for studying intracellular ***,its success depends on *** of specific and stable markers.A prominent example of markers that are rapidly gaining interest are nanobodies(Nbs.-15 kDa),which can be functionalized with bright and photostable organic *** to their relatively small size and high specificity,Nbs offer great potential for high-quality long-term subcellular imaging,but suffer from the fact that they cannot spontaneously cross the plasma membrane of live *** have recently discovered that laser-induced photoporation is well suited to deliver extrinsic labels to living cells without compromising their *** a laser-based technology,it is readily compatible with light microscopy and the typical cell recipients used for *** by these promising initial results,we demonstrate here for the first time successful long-term imaging of specific subcellular structures with labeled nanobodies in living *** illustrate this using Nbs that target GFP/YFP-protein constructs accessible in the cytoplasm,actin-bundling protein Fascin,and the histone H2A/H2B *** an efficiency of more than 80%labeled cells and minimal toxicity(-2%),photoporation proved to be an excellent intracellular delivery method for ***-lapse microscopy revealed that cell division rate and migration remained unaffected,confirming excellent cell viability and *** conclude that laser-induced photoporation labeled Nbs can be easily delivered into living cells,laying the foundation for further development of a broad range of Nbs with intracellular targets as a toolbox for long-term live-cell microscopy.

BACKGROUND Juvenile polyposis syndrome(JPS)is a rare hereditary polyposis disease frequently associated with an autosomal-dominant variant of the SMAD4 or BMPR1A *** often manifests with symptoms in children and adolescents and is infrequently diagnosed in asymptomatic *** the diagnosis is important as patients with JPS have a high risk of developing gastrointestinal cancer and require genetic counselling and close routine *** SUMMARY We report on the case of a 56-year-old female diagnosed with JPS after genetic testing revealed a rare variant of the BMPR1A gene BMPR1A c.1409T>C(***470Thr).She was initially referred for colonoscopy by her general practitioner after testing positive on a screening faecal immunochemical test and subsequently found to have polyposis throughout the entire colorectum on her index screening *** patient was asymptomatic with a normal physical examination and no related medical or family *** tests revealed only mild iron deficiency without *** date,there has only been one other reported case of JPS with the same genetic *** colonoscopies were organised for complete polyp clearance and the patient was returned for surveillance *** JPS patients can present with no prior symptoms or family *** testing plays an important diagnostic role guiding management.

Blastocystis incidence, spontaneous clearance, persistence and risk factors in a rural community in Thailand: A prospective cohort study

Objective: To investigate the incidence, spontaneous clearance, persistence and risk factors of Blastocystis infection in a rural community in ***: In February 2016, a cohort study was conducted in a rural community of Thailand. Baseline information of intestinal parasitic infections and follow-up visits were conducted. Blastocystis infection was detected in stool samples examined with short-term in vitro cultivation using Jones’ medium supplemented with 10% horse serum. Participants were tested for Blastocystis infection at every study visit. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to evaluate co-variates to determine the incidence of Blastocystis infection. Results: Of 733 enrolled participants, 57(7.78%) were positive and 676(92.22%) were negative for Blastocystis infection. All 676 participants were followed-up for Blastocystis infection between December 2016 and January 2018. In all, 52 of 482 cases(10.79%) comprised individual Blastocystis infection. The incidence density rates of Blastocystis infection, of spontaneous clearance of the disease and of persistent infection were 8.13, 63.14 and 38.70 per 1 000 person-months of follow-up, respectively. Our multivariate analysis revealed that opened defecation in fields or bushes(HR=4.8;95% CI=2.1-10.4, P<0.001), raising cows(HR=2.8;95% CI=1.1-7.1, P=0.032), not washing hands after animal contact(HR=2.1;95% CI=1.0-4.2, P=0.044) and presenting symptoms of nausea or vomiting(HR=2.3;95% CI=1.0-5.3, P=0.047) were predictive associated risks for the incidence of Blastocystis infection. Conclusions: Our study indicates that the best way to prevent Blastocystis infection can be by maintaining good personal hygiene, hand washing after animal contact and improving sanitary facilities.
