Prevalence and ecological factors affecting the distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes in Prunus groves in Spain

A wide survey was conducted to study plant-parasitic nematodes(PPNs)associated with Prunus groves in Spain.This research aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of PPNs in Prunus groves,as well as the influence of explanatory variables describing soil,climate and agricultural management in structuring the variation of PPNs community composition.A total of 218 sampling sites were surveyed and 84 PPN species belonging to 32 genera were identified based of an integrative taxonomic approach.PPN species considered as potential limiting factors in Prunus production,such as Meloidogyne arenaria,M.incognita,M.javanica,Pratylenchus penetrans and P.vulnus,were identified in this survey.Seven soil physico-chemical(C,Mg,N,Na,OM,P,pH and clay,loamy sand and sandy loam texture classes),four climate(Bio04,Bio05,Bio13 and Bio14)and four agricultural management variables(grove-use history less than 10 years,irrigation,apricot seedling rootstock,and Montclar rootstock)were identified as the most influential variables driving spatial patterns of PPNs communities.In particular,younger plantations showed higher values for species richness and diversity indices than groves cultivated for more than 20 years with Prunus spp.Our study increases the knowledge of the distribution and prevalence of PPNs associated with Prunus rhizosphere,as well as on the influence of explanatory variables driving the spatial structure PPNs communities,which has important implications for the successful design of sustainable management strategies in the future in this agricultural system.

A systematic review of salivary biomarkers in Parkinson's disease

The search fo r reliable and easily accessible biomarkers in Parkinson's disease is receiving a growing emphasis,to detect neurodegeneration from the prodromal phase and to enforce disease-modifying therapies.Despite the need for non-invasively accessible biomarke rs,the majo rity of the studies have pointed to cerebrospinal fluid or peripheral biopsies biomarkers,which require invasive collection procedures.Saliva represents an easily accessible biofluid and an incredibly wide source of molecular biomarkers.In the present study,after presenting the morphological and biological bases for looking at saliva in the search of biomarkers for Parkinson's disease,we systematically reviewed the results achieved so far in the saliva of different cohorts of Parkinson's disease patients.A comprehensive literature search on PubMed and SCOPUS led to the discovery of 289articles.After screening and exclusion,34 relevant articles were derived fo r systematic review.Alpha-synuclein,the histopathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease,has been the most investigated Parkinson's disease biomarker in saliva,with oligomeric alphasynuclein consistently found increased in Parkinson's disease patients in comparison to healthy controls,while conflicting results have been reported regarding the levels of total alpha-synuclein and phosphorylated alpha-synuclein,and few studies described an increased oligomeric alpha-synuclein/total alpha-synuclein ratio in Parkinson's disease.Beyond alpha-synuclein,other biomarkers to rgeting diffe rent molecular pathways have been explored in the saliva of Parkinson's disease patients:total tau,phosphorylated tau,amyloid-β1-42(pathological protein aggregation biomarkers);DJ-1,heme-oxygenase-l,metabolites(alte red energy homeostasis biomarkers);MAPLC-3beta(aberrant proteostasis biomarker);cortisol,tumor necrosis factor-alpha(inflammation biomarkers);DNA methylation,miRNA(DNA/RNA defects biomarkers);acetylcholinesterase activity(synaptic and neuronal network dysfunction biomarkers);Raman spectra,proteome,a

Significant advances in surgical techniques and relevant medium-and long-term outcomes over the past two decades have led to a substantial expansion in the indications for major liver resections.To support these outstanding results and to reduce perioperative complications,anesthesiologists must address and master key perioperative issues(preoperative assessment,proactive intraoperative anesthesia strategies,and implementation of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery approach).Intensive care unit monitoring immediately following liver surgery remains a subject of active and often unresolved debate.Among postoperative complications,posthepatectomy liver failure(PHLF)occurs in different grades of severity(A-C)and frequency(9%-30%),and it is the main cause of 90-d postoperative mortality.PHLF,recently redefined with pragmatic clinical criteria and perioperative scores,can be predicted,prevented,or anticipated.This review highlights:(1)The systemic consequences of surgical manipulations anesthesiologistsmust respond to or prevent,to positively impact PHLF(a proactive approach);and(2)the maximal intensivetreatment of PHLF,including artificial options,mainly based,so far,on Acute Liver Failure treatment(s),to buytime waiting for the recovery of the native liver or,when appropriate and in very selected cases,toward livertransplant.Such a clinical context requires a strong commitment to surgeons,anesthesiologists,and intensivists towork together,for a fruitful collaboration in a mandatory clinical continuum.

The microbiota impact on human diseases is well-known,and a growing body of literature is providing evidence about the complex interplay between microbiotaimmune system-human physiology/pathology,including cancers.Together with the defined risk factors(e.g.,smoke habits,diet,diabetes,and obesity),the oral,gut,biliary,and intrapancreatic microbiota contribute to pancreatic cancer development through different pathways including the interaction with the immune system.Unfortunately,a great majority of the pancreatic cancer patients received a diagnosis in advanced stages not amenable to be radically treated and potentially cured.Given the poor pancreatic cancer prognosis,complete knowledge of these complicated relationships could help researchers better understand the disease pathogenesis and thus provide early potential noninvasive biomarkers,new therapeutic targets,and tools for risk stratification that might result in greater therapeutic possibilities and eventually in a better and longer patient survival.

Dear Editor,The tumor suppressor gene CDKN1B,encoding for the p27^(Kip1)(p27)protein,defines the smallest region of deletion on chromosome 12p13 described in clonal hematopoietic disorders(CHDs)[1].Among them,myelodysplastic syndromes(MDSs)display typical onset in the elderly and an indolent behavior that may evolve in acute myeloid leukemia(AML)[2].Recent evidences support a model of parallel clonal evolution at the stem or progenitor cell level and implicate the need of more preclinical,translational and clinical research to identify better ways to timely target clones that may evolve toward malignancy[3,4].

Evaluating the best treatment for multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma:A propensity score-matched analysis

BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a common tumour often diagnosed with a multifocal presentation.Patients with multifocal HCC represent a heterogeneous group.Although Trans-Arterial ChemoEmbolization(TACE)is the most frequently employed treatment for these patients,previous data suggested that liver resection(LR)could be a safe and effective procedure.AIM To compare LR and TACE in patients with multifocal HCC in terms of procedurerelated morbidity and oncologic outcomes.METHODS All patients with multifocal HCC who underwent LR or TACE as the first procedure between May 2011 and March 2021 were enrolled.The decision to perform surgery or TACE was made after a multidisciplinary team evaluation.Only patients in Child-Pugh class A or B7 and stage B(according to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer staging system,without severe portal hypertension,vascular invasion,or extrahepatic spread)were included in the final analysis.Propensity score matching was used to adjust the baseline differences between patients undergoing LR and the TACE group[number and diameter of lesions,presence of cirrhosis,alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)levels,and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score].The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate overall survival(OS)and disease-free survival(DFS).The outcomes of LR and TACE were compared using the log-rank test.RESULTS After matching,30 patients were eligible for the final analysis,15 in each group.Morbidity rates were 42.9% and 40% for LR and TACE,respectively(P=0.876).Median OS was not different in the LR and TACE groups(53 mo vs 18 mo,P=0.312),while DFS was significantly longer with LR(19 mo vs 0 mo,P=0.0001).Subgroup analysis showed that patients in the Italian Liver Cancer(ITA.LI.CA)B2 stage,with AFP levels lower than 400 ng/mL,less than 3 lesions,and lesions bigger than 41 mm,benefited more from LR in terms of DFS.Patients classified as ITA.LI.CA B3,with AFP levels higher than 400 ng/mL and with more than 3 lesions,appeared to receive more benefit from TACE in terms of OS.CONCLUSION In a small

Newborn with Giant Non-Involuting Congenital Hemangioma: Mechanisms of Allodynia, Hyperalgesia and Treatment

In a newborn affected by a non involuting congenital hemangioma we measured allodynia through the application of a standard tactile stimulus and hyperalgesia through the regular administration of the Comfort scale which rates pain intensity. The baby presented signs of these pathological events over long periods of the disease. They may be attributed to the high amount of the nociceptive ligands in the hemangioma microenviroment and to the elevated concentration of TNF-alpha and IL-6 in the blood. For a long time, the pain was relieved by a combination of opioids, adjuvants and paracetamol, but also by thalidomide and unexpectedly by interferon alpha. A mechanism-based pain treatment needs to take into account the processes underlying pain and also the ongoing pathology.

Endoscopic fluorescent lymphography for gastric cancer

Lymphography by radioisotope or dye is a well-known technique for visualizing the lymphatic drainage pattern in a neoplastic lesion and it is in use in gastric cancer.Indocyanine green(ICG)more recently has been validated in fluorescent lymphography studies and is under evaluation as a novel tracer agent in gastric cancer.The amount and dilution of ICG injected as well as the site and the time of the injection are not standardized.In our unit,endoscopic submucosal injections of ICG are made as 0.5 mg in 0.5 mL at four peritumoral sites the day before surgery(for a total of 2.0 mg in 2.0 mL).Detection instruments for ICG fluorescence are evolving.Near-infrared systems integrated into laparoscopic or robotic instruments(near-infrared fluorescence imaging)have shown the most promising results.ICG fluorescence recognizes the node that receives lymphatic flow directly from a primary tumor.This is defined as the sentinel lymph node,and it has a high predictive negative value at the cT1 stage,able to reduce the extent of gastrectomy and lymph node dissection.ICG also enhances the number of lymph nodes detected during extended lymphadenectomy for advanced gastric cancer.Nevertheless,the practical effects of ICG use in a single patient are not yet clear.Standardization of the technique and further studies are needed before fluorescent lymphography can be used extensively worldwide.Until then,current guidelines recommend an extensive lymphadenectomy as the standard approach for gastric cancer with suspected metastasis.

Carbon capture and storage （CCS） have acquired an increasing importance in the debate on global wanning as a mean to decrease the environmental impact of energy conversion technologies, by capturing the CO2 produced from the use of fossil fuels in electricity generation and industrial processes. In this respect, post-combustion systems have received great attention as a possible near-term CO2 capture technology that can be retrofitted to existing power plants. This capture technology is, however, energy-intensive and results in large equipment sizes because of the large volumes of the flue gas to be treated. To cope with the demerits of other CCS technologies, the chemical looping combustion （CLC） process has been recently considered as a solution for CO2 separation. It is typically referred to as a technology without energy penalty. Indeed, in CLC the fuel and the combustion air are never mixed and the gases from the oxidation of the fuel （i.e., CO2 and H2O） leave the system as a separate stream and can be separated by condensation of H2O without any loss of energy. The key issue for the CLC process is to find a suitable oxygen carrier, which provides the fuel with the activated oxygen needed for combustion. The aim of this work is to explore the feasibility of using perovskites as oxygen carriers in CLC and to consider the possible advantages with respect to the scrubbing process with amines, a mature post-combustion technology for CO2 separation.

Gut microbiota and immune system in liver cancer:Promising therapeutic implication from development to treatment

Liver cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide,and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most frequent primary liver tumour,followed by cholangiocarcinoma.Notably,secondary tumours represent up to 90% of liver tumours.Chronic liver disease is a recognised risk factor for liver cancer development.Up to 90% of the patients with HCC and about 20% of those with cholangiocarcinoma have an underlying liver alteration.The gut microbiota-liver axis represents the bidirectional relationship between gut microbiota,its metabolites and the liver through the portal flow.The interplay between the immune system and gut microbiota is also well-known.Although primarily resulting from experiments in animal models and on HCC,growing evidence suggests a causal role for the gut microbiota in the development and progression of chronic liver pathologies and liver tumours.Despite the curative intent of“traditional”treatments,tumour recurrence remains high.Therefore,microbiota modulation is an appealing therapeutic target for liver cancer prevention and treatment.Furthermore,microbiota could represent a non-invasive biomarker for early liver cancer diagnosis.This review summarises the potential role of the microbiota and immune system in primary and secondary liver cancer development,focusing on the potential therapeutic implications.
