Odour Impact Assessment by Means of Dispersion Modeling, Dynamic Olfactometry and Mobile Electronic Nose around Agadir Fishing Port in Morocco

Odorous emissions emitted from various sources including industrial and commercial activities have particular concerns about human health. These malodors emissions are an environmental concern that affects health status and social life of the neighbors. That requires the local authority to set up a management strategy to control this nuisance. The evaluation of odour emissions from fishing port is complex because these emissions depend on several factors such as multiple sources of odor emissions, meteorological conditions, topography and others. That imposes the use of complementary approaches to monitor odours. In this paper, the case of Agadir fishing port is studied, which is adjacent to the tourist area and residential neighborhoods and which hosts a number of points that can generate odors. To assess this odour impact, three methods are used such as dynamic olfactometry, dispersion modeling and mobile electronic nose (e-nose). The use of these three methods in a complementary manner to assess odour impacts around a fishing port allowed both the quantification of the emissions using dynamic olfactometry and the evaluation of their impact on the study area with model dispersion. The results enabled also to identify the most affected areas of the city by odor emissions and to recognize the meteorological parameters maximizing odor impact. The other goal of this work is to compare the results of the odour dispersion modeling and e-nose measurements for one year in terms of frequency of overtaking the set alert thresholds over the same period. Comparison highlights the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches. Modeling can be used predicatively but it does not take into account fugitive emissions reliably in the absence of data on these emissions, modeling based on the hourly average misjudges the odor peaks, while e-nose made it possible to obtain validated data and provides accurate, affordable and real-time odour measurement capability tacking in to account t

A Continuous Electronic Nose Odor Monitoring System in the City of Agadir Morocco

The city of Agadir is one of the best tourist destinations in Morocco, considered as one of the most beautiful bay in the world, which has a port infrastructure and strong industry based on the processing of seafood which often implicated as the source of odors. In order to identify in real time the sources responsible for the odors experienced in the city center and to act quickly in conjunction with industry, the Wilaya of Souss Massa Draa Region has implemented a continuous odor monitoring and tracking system using electronic noses. The treatment of meteorological data and data sent by electronic nose enables atmospheric dispersion modeling, which allows to follow instantly the odor level in the study area and to identify the sources responsible for odors with receiving warning of incidents odors, data analysis system generated every four minutes allowed to have results confirmed by companions of questionnaires to nearby residents. To reduce odors, recommendations have been suggested, which is to set up affordable and efficient practices.

Implementation of the Air Quality Monitoring Network at Agadir City in Morocco

Air pollution is a major global issue with widely known harmful effects on human health and the environment. This pollution is a very complex phenomenon given the diversity of pollutants that may be present in the atmosphere. The air quality in urban areas is of a great concern for residents living in cities and represents a current issue that requires an adequate management. So that air quality policy is driven by health concerns. In this paper, we present an overview on the experience of Agadir city to establish the air quality management policy, local authority on the whole have developed a good understanding of air quality in the area. Indeed for several years, efforts have been made to monitor the air quality in this city, this translated by air quality assessment since 2006 using mobile laboratory and fixed station. Our goals in this study were to review the operation of Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) making better use of available resources to improve its outcomes and make recommendations with a view to improving air quality issues. This work highlights the requirement to revise periodically the LAQM for generating priority for air quality issues within local authority and the need to implement the optimizing Air Quality Monitoring Network (AQMN).

Adsorption of Disperse Blue SBL dye by synthesized poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite

The present study has been undertaken to evaluate the adsorption in batch mode of a disperse dye (Disperse Blue SBL) by poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite synthesized by coprecipitation between Ca(NO3)2and (NH4)2HPO4 reagents in aqueous solution at room temperature. The adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the factors that influence the dye uptake by the adsorbent, such as the contact time under agitation, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, solution temperature, and pH. The experimental results show that the percentage of dye removal increases with increasing the amount of adsorbent, until the total discoloration. The adsorption isotherms follow the model of Langmuir with a high adsorption capacity. The adsorption was pH and temperature dependent.

Modeling Experimental Design for Photo-Fenton Degradation of Methomyl

Modeling experimental design was used to study the main effects and the interaction effects between operational parameters in the photocatalytic degradation of pesticide methomyl. The important parameters which affect the removal efficiency of methomyl such as concentration of Fe(NO3)3, concentration of H2O2, initial concentration of the pesticide and pH. The parameters were coded as x1, x2, x3 and x4, consecutively, and were investigated at two levels (–1 and +1). The effects of individual variables and their interaction effects for dependent variables, namely, photocatalytic degradation efficiency (%) were determined. From the statistical analysis, the most effective parameters in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency were initial concentrations of the methomyl and Fe(NO3)3. The interaction between initial concentration of the pesticide and Fe(NO3)3 was the most influencing interaction. The optimum conditions that were obtained for the photocatalytic degradation of methomyl were: minimum quantity of contaminant: 6 × 10–5 mol.L–1, maximum quantity of Fe(NO3)3: 5 × 10–4 mol.L-1, initial pH of the solution: 3 and maximum quantity H2O2: 10–2 mol.L–1.

Kinetic Modeling of the Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange by Supported TiO2

The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in UV/Supported-TiO2 system was investigated and a kinetic model was presented. The experimental results show that the photocatalytic degradation rate is favored by high concentration of dye in solution and is enhanced by the solution temperature. A simple kinetic model has been proposed which can describe the discoloration process in an adequate way. The calculated results obtained were in good agreement with experimental data. The model predicts the concentration of MO during the photocatalytic degradation process.
