A robust methodology for the quantitative assessmentof the rat jawbone microstructure

Micro-computed tomography can be applied for the assessment of the micro-architectural characteristics of the cortical and trabecular bones in either physiological or disease conditions. However, reports often lack a detailed description of the methodological steps used to analyse these images, such as the volumes of interest, the algorithms used for image filtration, the approach used for image segmentation, and the bone parameters quantified, thereby making it difficult to compare or reproduce the studies. This study addresses this critical need and aims to provide standardized assessment and consistent parameter reporting related to quantitative jawbone image analysis. Various regions of the rat jawbones were screened for their potential for standardized micro-computed tomography analysis. Furthermore, the volumes of interest that were anticipated to be most susceptible to bone structural changes in response to experimental interventions were defined. In the mandible, two volumes of interest were selected, namely, the condyle and the trabecular bone surrounding the three molars. In the maxilla, the maxillary tuberosity region and the inter-radicular septum of the second molar were considered as volumes of interest. The presented protocol provides a standardized and reproducible methodology for the analysis of relevant jawbone volumes of interest and is intended to ensure global, accurate, and consistent reporting of its morphometry. Furthermore, the proposed methodology has potential, as a variety of rodent animal models would benefit from its implementation.

Polarization variability arising from clumps in the winds of Wolf-Rayet stars

Polarimetric and photometric variability of Wolf-Rayet （WR） stars as caused by clumps in the winds is revisited. In our model, which is improved from Li et al., radial expansion of the thickness is accounted for, but we retain dependence on the β velocity law and stellar occultation effects. We again search for parameters that can yield results consistent with observations in regards to the mean polarization p, the ratio R = σp/σphot of polarimetric to photometric variability and the volume filling factor fV. Clump generation and spatial distribution are randomized by the Monte Carlo method so as to produce clumps which are, in the mean, distributed uniformly in space and have time intervals that obey a Gaussian distribution. The generated clumps move radially outward with a velocity law determined by a β index, and the angular size of clumps is assumed to be fixed. By fitting the observed σp/σphot and the volume filling factor fv, clump velocity taw index β （- 2） and clump ejection rate .N （- 1） are inferred, and are found to be well constrained. In addition, the subpeak features of broad emission lines seem to support the clump ejection rate. Meanwhile, the fraction of total mass loss rate that is contained in clumps is obtained by fitting observed polarization. We conclude that this picture of the clumps＇ properties produces a valuable diagnostic of WR wind structure.

Effect of high-frequency loading and parathyroid hormone administration on peri-implant bone healing and osseointegration

The objective of this study is to examine the effect of low-magnitude, high-frequency(LMHF) loading, and anti-osteoporosis medications such as parathyroid hormone(PTH) and bisphosphonates on peri-implant bone healing in an osteoporosis model, and to assess their combined effects on these processes. Thirteen-week-old ovariectomized rats(n = 44) were divided into three groups:PTH, alendronate, and saline. After 3 weeks of drug administration, titanium implants were inserted into the tibiae. Each group was subdivided into two groups: with or without LMHF loading via whole-body vibration(50 Hz at 0.5 g, 15 min per day, 5 days per week). Rats were killed 4 weeks following implantation. Removal torque test, micro-CT analyses(relative gray(RG) value, water = 0,and implant = 100), and histomorphometric analyses(bone-to-implant contact(BIC) and peri-implant bone formation(bone volume/tissue volume(BV/TV))) were performed. Removal torque values and BIC were significantly differed by loading and drug administration(ANOVA). Post hoc analysis showed that PTH-treated groups were significantly higher than the other drug-treated groups. BV/TV was significantly enhanced by PTH administration. In cortical bone, RG values were significantly increased by *** trabecular bone, however, RG values were significantly increased by PTH administration. These findings suggest that LMHF loading and PTH can act locally and additively on the bone healing process, improving the condition of implant osseointegration.

Introduction: Achieving the goal of “zero new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections by 2030” requires the elimination of HIV transmission within serodiscordant couples. In Benin, the phenomenon of HIV serodiscordance remains poorly documented. Objective: the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HIV serodiscordance and its associated factors among infected couples in the city of Parakou. Study Framework and Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study with an analytical focusing on qualitative and quantitative plans. It was carried out on thirty approved sites in the city of Parakou between July and December 2022. We used a non-exhaustive convenience sample of people living with HIV (PLHIV) whose partner’s status was known. Data collection took place in two phases: an interview phase during which sociodemographic, economic, behavioral and marital/social data were collected. The second phase focused on clinical and therapeutic data which were collected from the patients’ personal records. Results: A total of 417 study subjects were recruited. The average age (SD) of the subjects was 38.17 (±10.25) years [37.19 - 39.16]. Females accounted for the largest proportion (79.62%). Most respondents (74.11%) were married. Monogamous unions were the most frequent, involving 67.87% of participants, most of whom (44.60%) had been infected for between 1 and 5 years. Couples in union for less than 10 years were the most numerous (218 people or 52.28%). The respondent was head of household among only 140 respondents (33.57%) of which 84 men (60.00%) and 56 women (40.00%). Female heads of household were mainly divorcees and widows. Around 75% of PLHIV had monthly incomes of less than 50,000F CFA (81.16 USD). Prevalence of HIV serodiscordance was 71.70%. 结直肠癌腹膜转移(colorectal cancer peritoneal metastasis,CRCPM)一直是荷兰临床肿瘤学研究的重点领域之一,对比系统化疗加姑息手术治疗,CRCPM患者更易从肿瘤细胞减灭术(cytoreductive surgery,CRS)加腹腔热灌注化疗(hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy,HIPEC)中获益,CRS+HIPEC在治疗CRCPM中已具有稳定的临床基础。目前,荷兰建立了全国肿瘤登记处,对所有腹膜癌病例进行详细登记和分析。本文重点介绍了荷兰CRCPM最新研究,包括流行病学研究、多中心随机临床试验、基础和转化研究的新成果,给出了国际热点问题和学术争鸣的荷兰答案,提出了腹膜肿瘤学未来发展的新机遇和新方向。

Extent and Structure of Phenotypic Variability in Solenostemon rotundifolius Germplasm from Ghana and Burkina Faso

Solenostemon rotundifolius is a species belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is currently one of the minor plants of high socio-economic interest. One of the limitations to promoting this species in Burkina Faso is the lack of varieties that meet consumers’ demands. Implementing a breeding program is an important step toward achieving this goal. Such a program is based on the variability of agronomical traits of interest within evaluated germplasm. This study aimed to assess the level of two germplasms variability of S. rotundifolius from Ghana and Burkina Faso for traits related to vegetative development, cycle, and yield. Agromorphological characterization of 174 accessions, including 116 from Ghana and 58 from Burkina Faso was carried out in Randomised Complete Block Design with three replications. The characterization was made on the basis of fifteen (15) quantitative traits related to the canopy and leaf size, the cycle, and the yield. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences between accessions within each germplasm for all the evaluated traits. The analysis of the structuration of this agromorphological variability allowed organizing the accessions into different groups. These results could lead to the identification of accessions within each germplasm for breeding purposes or future research on genotype-environment interactions.

The Determinants of Population Growth in Rwanda
