Surface defects caused during cutting and po.ishing in the fabricatio. o. cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) nuclear detecto.s limit their spectral perfo.mance. Chemical treatments are o.ten used to.remo.e surface damages and defects. In this paper, we present the analysis o. Te and Teo. species o. the surfaces o. CdZnTe nuclear detecto.s treated with hydro.en bro.ide and ammo.ium-based so.utio.s. The CdZnTe wafers were chemo.mechanically po.ished in a mixture o. hydro.en bro.ide in hydro.en pero.ide and ethylene glyco., fo.lo.ed by a chemical passivatio. in a mixture o. ammo.ium fluo.ide and hydro.en pero.ide so.utio.. X-ray pho.o.lectro. spectro.co.y sho.ed significant co.versio. o. Te to.Teo., thus pro.ucing a mo.e chemically stable surface. The resistivity o. the CdZnTe samples is in the o.der o. 1010 o.ms-cm. The current fo. a given applied vo.tage increased fo.lo.ing the passivatio. and decreased after a 3-ho.r perio.. Results fro. spectral respo.se measurements sho.ed that the 59.5-keV gamma-peak o. Am-241 was stable under the same channel fo. the surface treatment pro.esses.
