Nigeria is an Afrotropical region with considerable ecological heterogeneity and levels of biotic *** its vertebrate fauna,reptiles have broad distributions,thus,they constitute a compelling system for assessing the impact of ecological variation and geographic isolation on species *** red-headed rock agama,Agama agama,lives in a wide range of habitats and,thus,it may show genetic structuring and ***,we tested the hypothesis that ecology affects its genetic structure and population *** inference phylogenetic analysis of a mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)gene recovered four well-supported matrilines with strong evidence of genetic structuring consistent with eco-geographic *** differences among populations based on the mtDNA also correlated with geographic distance. The ecologicalniche model for the matrilines had a good fit and robust performance. Population divergence alongthe environmental axes was associated with climatic conditions, and temperature ranked highestamong all environmental variables for forest specialists, while precipitation ranked highest for theforest/derived savanna, and savanna specialists. Our results cannot reject the hypothesis that nicheconservatism promotes geographic isolation of the western populations of Nigerian A. ***, ecological gradients and geographic isolation impact the genetic structure and population divergenceof the lizards. This species might be facing threats due to recent habitat fragmentation,especially in western Nigeria. conservation actions appear necessary.

Accessibility Analysis of Healthcare Delivery System within Enugu Urban Area Using Geographic Information System

The problem of accessibility of health institution, with respect to the available facility to serve the entire population leaving in an area, can be solved using GIS. This paper presents an analysis on accessibility of healthcare facilities in Enugu urban area in a GIS environment. This was achieved through acquisition of a base map of Enugu State showing geographic extent of Enugu Urban, determining the geometric positions of health institutions in Enugu urban using handheld GPS, creation of a spatial database of existing healthcare facilities and demonstrating through various analyses the potentials of GIS in measurement of accessibility to healthcare facilities in Enugu urban Area. The analysis includes network analysis, used to determine the closeness of a facility and shortest route to these healthcare facilities. ARcGIS 9.3 was the main software used. This was supported by Geocal for coordinate conversion and Microsoft office packages. The result of the study showed the spatial distribution of health institutions, closest facilities in case of emergency and route to those health institutions within Enugu urban Area. It was noticed that most of the healthcare facilities were located within Enugu North local government area (LGA). Other settlements and LGAs had fewer healthcare facilities. Areas deprived of healthcare facility were also identified. Routes and closest facilities to those deprived areas were identified in the settlements/area. The analysis showed the efficacy of GIS in determining accessibility of healthcare institutions in Enugu urban area. The study is thus, recommended as a spatial decision support system for decisions regarding spatial accessibility of healthcare facilities in an urban area.

Objective:To determine the relationship between asymptomatic malaria parasitemia and some oxidative stress parameters in pregnant Nigerian ***:This is a cross-sectional study involving 130 normal pregnant women at various trimesters,who were attending antenatal clinic at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital(UNTH) and Kenechukwu Specialist Hospital in Enugu.A comparable group(control),made of 30 non pregnant women was also *** a 24 hour dietary recall,serum levels of vitamin A,c and malondialdehyde(MDA) were determined by colorimetric method,while vitamin E was determined by absorptiometric ***:There were no statistically significant differences in age,parity,estimated calorie,vitamins A,c and E intake between the pregnant and non pregnant groups(P>0.05).The serum level of the vitamins(umol/L) and MDA(umol/L) in control,1st,2nd and 3rd trimesters respectively were:(l)Vitamin A:1.6±0.36 vs 0.6±0.26 vs 0.62±0.33 vs 0.46±0.21(Pc:75.65±14.15 vs 62.97±24.4 vs 37.85±15.19 vs 28.94±8.52(Pcant changes in the serum level of the vitamins and MDA between the positive and the negative parasitemia subjects(P>0.05). conclusions:Asymptomatic malaria parasitemia does not induce additional oxidative stress on pregnant women in *** enormity of acute and complicated attack should be further investigated.

Biodegradation Potential of Some Bacteria and Fungi Isolates from Septic Tank Sewage in Some Related Sites in Delta and Edo States of Nigeria

The biodegradation potentials of some selected bacteria isolated from septic tank sewage in the region under study were examined. Three replicate samples from Locations A, B and C representing Agbor, Benin and Sapele regions of Delta and Edo States, Nigeria respectively were collected from the influent tank (raw sewage) between November 2018 and January 2019 for testing. The sewage in 10 ml septic tubes for both experimental and control samples was subjected to shake flask biodegradation analysis using the isolates with the highest screen test result. A total of 18 bio-treatment options were available in this study. In the shake flask biodegradation of sewage using isolates, total organic carbon (TOC) values from day 0 to 25 in all isolates were lower compared with the control experiments. TOC values at day 25 were lowest (0.10 mg/L) in the treatment containing Bacillus sp. + Klebsiella sp. as compared to the TOC value (2.01 mg/L) of the treatment which had Aeromonas sp. +

Ethanol Production from cassava Pulp by a Newly Isolated Thermotolerant <i>Pichia kudriavzevii</i>Lc375240

A total of 500 thermotolerant fermenting yeast isolates (100 from palm-wine and 400 from spoilt fruits) were screened for ethanol production at high temperatures. The best isolate that produced up to 4% ethanol from 10% glucose at 45°c was selected for further experiments. The optimum pH for ethanol production by the isolate was pH 6 at both 30°c and 42°c. The isolate was identified as Pichia kudriavzevii base on the 18s ribosomal DNA. Ethanol production from 200 g/L cassava pulp using Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation (SSF) method at 30°c and 42°c by the isolate was investigated. At 30°c, an ethanol concentration of 30 g/L was produced. This represents an ethanol yield of 0.15 g/g of cassava pulp and 58.8% of the theoretical yield. However at 42°c, the concentration of ethanol produced increased to 42 g/L representing an ethanol yield of 0.21 g/g of cassava pulp and 82.4% of the theoretical yield. The isolate produced slightly higher ethanol than the two typed strains NcYc 587 and NcYc 2791 at 42°c. This isolate has a good potential to be used for commercial bioethanol production since it can produce ethanol at 45°c without a significant drop in ethanol yield.

Iron and zinc deficiencies is common in malaria endemic areas and contributes to *** c and zinc combined supplements have been hypothesized as a *** study evaluated the effect of different combinations of vitamin c and zinc on haematological parameters and mortality of Plasmodium berghei-infected mice(Mus musculus).A three-week trial was carried out to assess haematological changes and mortality of mice after 3-day artemether treatment co-administered with vitamin c-zinc *** was based on combinations of vitamin c and ***,packed cell volume(PcV),white blood cell count(WBc),red blood cell count(RBc),haemoglobin concentration(HB),and mortality were assayed *** supplement improved PcV,HB,mean cell volume(McV)and mean cell haemoglobin(McH).Mice mortality was higher in the absence of the supplement,though the difference was not significant(x^2=5.214,P=0.5167).Parasitaemia was not reduced by the supplement.A 30:70 vitamin c-zinc supplement performed better than other combinations ***,vitamin c-zinc supplement play roles in the management of malaria,since they improved PcV and HB,and lowered mortality rate,complementing the therapeutic effect of artemether.

An Analysis of the cycles and Periodicities of Annual Rainfall over Awka Region, Nigeria

The aim of this study was to analyse the cycles and periodicities of annual rainfall over Awka region, Nigeria. This is necessitated by the fact that, despite the fact that wet years contribute greatly to annual flooding and gully erosion observed in the area, researches on cycles and periodicities of rainfall in the area are obviously lacking. This research is, therefore, an attempt to close this gap in knowledge. 35 years rainfall data (1975-2010) were collected from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) Lagos from which harmonic calculation was made using Harmonic Analytical Technique. The model produced 13 harmonics (cycles) of which those of 1, 6 and 11 with amplitudes of 181.66 mm, 149.42 mm and 126.63 mm and periodicities of 35, 5.20 and 2.84 were isolated as most important. All calculations were performed using MINITAB version 16 statistical programme running under Pc/Windows 98. Following from the findings, it was suggested that Urban and Regional Planners, Geomophologists and Engineers could use the result to develop a flood and erosion management plan for the area.

Prevalence and Antimicrobial Resistance of Gram-Negative Bacteria Isolates in Shellfish Samples from Two River Estuaries in South-South Nigeria

Antibiotic resistant bacteria pathogens remain the leading cause of shellfish borne diseases and a major health threat to humans worldwide. The objectives of this study were to isolate, identify, and determine the antibiotic resistance patterns of Gram-negative bacteria from shellfish. We analyzed a total of 540 shellfish (117 clams, 88 oysters, and 136 periwinkles) samples collected from different vendors at Iko and Douglas creeks in Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria. conventional cultural techniques, morphological, biochemical characteristics, and PcR amplification were used to identify the bacterial isolates. Antibiotic susceptibility tests (Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method) and ESBL phenotype (disk) of the isolates were performed. One hundred and thirty-five (135) Gram-negative bacteria comprising 5 genera and 14 species were detected at a prevalence of: Alcaligenes faecalis TRB-7 38 (28.2%), Pseudomonas oryzihabitans strain KcB005 16 (11.9%), Paenalcaligenes retgerii strain B5 12 (8.9%) Pseudomonas aeruginosa JB2 10 (7.4%), Providencia stuartii DMc-28b 9 (6.7%), Alcaligenes species TLT151 8 (5.9%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa cIFRI DTSB1 7 (5.2%), Paenalcaligenes species UN24 7 (5.2%), Alcaligenes faecalis BT10 7 (5.2%), Vibrio species strain PrVy108 6 (4.4%), Pseudomonas xiamenensis c10-2 5 (3.7%), Providencia vemicola Bu15_38 4 (2.9%), Pseudomonas anguillisceptica 4029 3 (2.2%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa N15-01092 3 (2.2%). All tested isolates showed various degrees of resistance to the thirteen antimicrobials evaluated. High levels of resistance (100%) to cefepime and imipenem were expressed by all isolates except the Providencia species. Antibacterial Activity of <i>Psidium guajava</i>Leaf Extract against Selected Pathogenic Bacteria

This study has been embarked upon due to increased resistance of bacteria to many already synthesized drugs and the high price of the orthodox medicines in the market, the antimicrobial effect of Psidium guajava leaf extracts against selected drug-resistant bacteria will help to reduce the overdependence on orthodox or synthetic drugs which greater population of the society cannot afford due to economic/financial restriction. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Psidium guajava were assayed for antibacterial activity using the agar dilution method in the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIc) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBc). The bioactive components of the extracts were determined using standard techniques and the inhibitory activities of the extracts were compared to gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, azithromycin, ofloxacin, and nitrofurantoin. The MIc of the extract on the test organisms ranges from 10 mg/ml - 40 mg/ml. The sensitivity test showed that the organisms were susceptible to Psidium guajava leave extract except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The phytochemical analysis of the extracts revealed the presence of bioactive compounds such as Tannin, Saponin, Balsam, Flavonoids, Alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, carbohydrate, Resins, Terpenes, and Sterols. It has been shown that the leaves of Psidium guajava have antibacterial effects and hence can be used to treat the ailments caused by those organisms at a particular dosage and concentration. However, more research work on its toxicity level, synergistic or antagonistic interaction with other plants or drugs is needed to consolidate its usage.

Removal of Pigments from Palm Oil Using Activated Ibusa Kaolinite: Equilibrium, Kinetic and Thermodynamic Studies

The effectiveness of Ibusa kaolinite as an adsorbent in removing pigments from palm oil has been investigated in this study. Ibusa kaolinite was prepared as an adsorbent by treating it with hydrochloric acid. The surface area of the clay was found to increase with increase in acid dosage up to a maximum and then de-creased while its cation exchange capacity decreased with increase in acid dosage. The activated clay was used as an adsorbent for the removal of pigments from palm oil. The bleaching process was investigated by varying the clay dosage, acid concentration and temperature. The highest removal of pigments was recorded at 7 M Hcl concentration, 4 g clay dosage and 100°c temperature, and about 97.4% pigments were removed in 80 minutes. Four isotherm models, three kinetic models, and the intra-particle diffusion model were applied to fit the experimental data. It was found that the equilibrium data were best represented by the Temkin isotherm model. The experimental data fitted well the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Diffusion studies indicated that in-tra-particle diffusion is not the sole rate-controlling factor. The bleaching pro-cess was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increasing random-ness of adsorbed species.
