Structured light–electromagnetic waves with a strong spatial inhomogeneity of amplitude,phase,and polarization–has occupied far-reaching positions in both optical research and ***(THz)waves,due to recent innovations in photonics and nanotechnology,became so robust that it was not only implemented in a wide variety of applications such as communications,spectroscopic analysis,and non-destructive imaging,but also served as a low-cost and easily implementable experimental platform for novel concept *** this work,we show that structured nonparaxial THz light in the form of Airy,Bessel,and Gaussian beams can be generated in a compact way using exclusively silicon diffractive optics prepared by femtosecond laser ablation *** accelerating nature of the generated structured light is demonstrated via THz imaging of objects partially obscured by an opaque beam *** conventional paraxial approaches,when a combination of a lens and a cubic phase(or amplitude)mask creates a nondiffracting Airy beam,we demonstrate simultaneous lensless nonparaxial THz Airy beam generation and its application in imaging *** of single objects,imaging with a controllable placed obstacle,and imaging of stacked graphene layers are presented,revealing hence potential of the approach to inspect quality of 2D *** nonparaxial THz illumination is investigated both theoretically and experimentally with appropriate extensive *** structured THz illumination consistently outperforms the conventional one in resolution and contrast,thus opening new frontiers of structured light applications in imaging and inverse scattering problems,as it enables sophisticated estimates of optical properties of the investigated structures.

Connective tissue growth factor reacts as an IL-6/STAT3-regulated hepatic negative acute phase protein

AIM:To investigate the mechanisms involved in a possible modulator role of interleukin(IL) -6 signalling on CYR61-CTGF-NOV(CCN) 2/connective tissue growth factor(CTGF) expression in hepatocytes(PC) and to look for a relation between serum concentrations of these two parameters in patients with acute inflammation. METHODS:Expression of CCN2/CTGF,p-STAT3,p-Smad 3/1 and p-Smad2 was examined in primary freshly isolated rat or cryo-preserved human PC exposed to various stimuli by Western blotting,electrophoretic mobility shift assay(EMSA) ,reporter-gene-assays and reversetranscriptase polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS:IL-6 strongly down-regulated CCN2/CTGF protein and mRNA expression in PC,enhanceable by extracellular presence of the soluble IL-6 receptor gp80,and supported by an inverse relation between IL-6 and CCN2/CTGF concentrations in patients'*** inhi-bition of TGFβ1 driven CCN2/CTGF expression by IL-6 did not involve a modulation of Smad2(and Smad1/3) ***,the STAT3 SH2 domain binding peptide,a selective inhibitor of STAT3 DNA binding activity,counteracted the inhibitory effect of IL-6 on CCN2/CTGF expression much more pronounced than pyrrolidine-dithiocarbamate,an inhibitor primarily of STAT3 *** EMSA confirmed STAT3 binding to the proposed proximal STAT binding site in the CCN2/CTGF promoter. CONCLUSION:CCN2/CTGF is identified as a hepatocellular negative acute phase protein which is downregulated by IL-6 via the STAT3 pathway through interaction on the DNA binding level.

Natural antioxidants in the management of Parkinson's disease: Review of evidence from cell line and animal models

Parkinson’s disease(PD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease. It results from the death of dopaminergic neurons. The pathophysiological mechanisms in idiopathic PD include the production of α-synuclein and mitochondrial respiratory function-affecting complex I, caused by reactive oxygen ***, the use of natural antioxidants in PD may provide an alternative therapy that prevents oxidative stress and reduces disease progression. In this review, the effects of hydroxytyrosol, Ginkgo biloba,Withania somnifera, curcumin, green tea, and Hypericum perforatum in PD animal and cell line models are compared and discussed. The reviewed antioxidants show evidence of protecting neural cells from oxidative stress in animal and cell models of PD. However, the clinical efficacy of these phytochemicals needs to be optimised and further investigated.

Changes in symmetry of anterior chamber following routine cataract surgery in non-glaucomatous eyes

Background:To assess minimum and maximum changes in anterior chamber dimensions following routine cataract surgery in non-glaucomatous ***:Forty-two eyes(42 participants)underwent routine cataract surgery with same surgeon and were assessed preoperatively,1,3,6 and 12 months *** outcome measure:Angle-to-angle diameter(AAD)(at 0-180°,45-225°,90-270°,135-315°),Anterior-chamber-angle(ACA)(at 0°,45°,90°,135°,180°,225°,270° and 315°)and central anterior chamber depth(ACD)at all *** outcome measures:relationship to axial length(AL).Results:The mean AAD and ACA increased post-operatively in all meridians at all visits *** 12 months,there was a maximum change in AAD in horizontal meridian(506.55±468.71μm)and least in vertical meridian(256.31±1082.3μm).The mean percentage increase in ACA postoperatively was least at 90o(5%increase compared to 29–35%elsewhere).Central ACD deepened at all postoperative visits and this did not change over 12 *** was no correlation between AAD,ACA and ACD with AL at any ***:The AAD,ACA and ACD increases following cataract surgery in non-glaucomatous eyes,but at 12 months increase in AAD is least in vertical compared to horizontal ***,ACA was narrower(only 5%increase)superiorly compared to elsewhere(29–35%increase in ACA).This may have implications with regards to surgeries performed in the anterior chamber and corneal endothelial cell loss.

Recently,the gut microbiota has been recognized as an obvious active player in addition to liver steatosis/steatohepatitis in the pathophysiological mechanisms of the development of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),even in the absence of *** from clinical and experimental studies shows the association of specific changes in the gut microbiome and the direct contribution to maintaining liver inflammation and/or cancerogenesis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease-induced *** composition of the gut microbiota differs significantly in obese and lean individuals,especially in the abundance of pro-inflammatory lipopolysaccharide-producing phyla,and,after establishing steatohepatitis,it undergoes minor changes during the progression of the disease toward advanced *** studies proved that the microbiota of obese subjects can induce steatohepatitis in normally fed *** the contrary,the transplantation of healthy microbiota to obese mice relieves ***,further studies are needed to confirm these findings and the mechanisms *** this review,we have evaluated well-documented clinical and experimental research on the role of the gut microbiota in the manifestation and promotion of HCC in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).Furthermore,a literature review of microbiota alterations and consequences of dysbiosis for the promotion of NASH-induced HCC was performed,and the advantages and limitations of the microbiota as an early marker of the diagnosis of HCC were discussed.
