Soil Seed Bank Phytosociology in No-Tillage Systems in the Southwestern Amazon Region

Understanding the ecological dynamics of weed populations in no-tillage systems is important to establish strategies for integrated weed control capable of increasing agroecosystem sustainability. This study sought to evaluate the effect of succession systems on the seed bank in a no-tillage system. The effects of fifteen succession systems, composed of seven grasses, seven Leguminosae, and a fallow condition, were evaluated on the seed bank at two soil depths (0 to 10 and 10 to 20 cm). The species found in the seed bank were quantified and identified by species and family. The precision of sampling, density, dominance, the indices of diversity of Simpson and Shannon-Weiner;index of sustainability;analysis of groupings of dissimilarities;and the value of importance of each species were calculated. High weed diversity was observed;29 species were counted, including members of 12 different families. The highest expression of weeds was observed at soil depths of 0 to 10 cm. The Simpson and Shannon-Weiner coefficients indicated high diversity in both systems of succession. The index of sustainability did not indicate significant alterations in the different systems of succession. The coefficients of confenetic correlation were 0.74% and 0.82% for the 0 - 10 and the 10 - 20 cm soil depths respectively. It is concluded that there is a high diversity of weeds in the agroecosystems of Amazonia, and different cover crops promote modifications in the community and expression of the weeds’ seed bank.

Model Study: The genus Acinetobacter is composed of opportunistic pathogens that mainly affects immunocompromised and patients during a prolonged hospitalization period. A. baumannii can survive in the hospital setting at various locations such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis machines, ventilation systems, water sources, skin and mucous membranes of health professionals and patients, drug preparations and disinfectants among others. Antimicrobials are essential for the treatment of infections, so their use has become common, and often inappropriate and abusive. This pathogen has presented multi-resistance to several classes of antimicrobials and has become a major cause of death in hospitals. Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of Acinetobacter baumannii in clinical samples from the Laboratory of Clinical Analyzes, HCSL of Pouso Alegre, MG. Methods: All the samples referring to the patients of the Samuel Libanio Clinical Hospital including most of the specialties were evaluated. From the positive samples for Acinetobacter baumannii the medical records of hospitalized patients were evaluated. From the medical records, data were obtained as gender and age of the patient, place of hospitalization, together with month and year of the laboratory procedure. Result: A total of 14,859 samples of diverse materials were evaluated, being 80 (0.5%) samples positive for Acinetobacter baumannii. Of these positive samples, the largest occurrences were identified in male patients 59 (73.7%), aged over 60 years 37 (46.3%). The most affected hospital sector was Adult ICU with 44 (55.0%) of the cases. In May 2015, there were 5 (6.3%) cases registered and in May 2016, 16 (20.0%) cases. The clinical material with the highest occurrence of Acinetobacter baumannii was Mini Bal 29 (36.3%). Objective: This study was performed with the purpose a report clinical cases involving condylar position and Nóbilo’s sliding plates. Background: Patients may present temporomandibular disorder (TMD), which is characterized by pain in masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints and limited mandible movements. Treatment involving oral rehabilitation with the use of complete dentures with Nóbilo’s sliding plates has been an alternative for the treatment of TMD. Materials and Methods: Nine patients with a history of TMD signs and symptoms (RDC/TMD)—in particular, muscular and articular pain—received pain evaluations, mandibular movement analysis, transcranial radiography and an electromyographic analysis of the masseter and temporalis muscles before and after the use of complete dentures with Nóbilo’s sliding plates. Results: After treatment, the patients had reduced painful symptoms, an increase in mandibular movement and adequate electromyographic activity. The normalized EMG data were ta-bulated and analyzed statistically using SPSS version 17.0 for Windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), and the values were compared by umpaired independent Student’s t-test. Conclusion: The use of Nóbilo’s sliding plates promoted improvements in electromyographic activity, muscular pain and man-dibular movement.

This work presents a short review of the current research on the acousto-optic mechanism applied to optical fibers. The role of the piezoelectric element and the acousto-optic modulator in the excitation of flexural and longitudinal acoustic modes in the frequency range up to 1.2 MHz is highlighted. A combination of the finite elements and the transfer matrix methods is used to simulate the interaction of the waves with Bragg and long period gratings. Results show a very good agreement with experimental data. Recent applications such as the writing of gratings under the acoustic excitation and a novel viscometer sensor based on the acousto-optic mechanism are discussed.

Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the generation of cytotoxic agents through the dynamic interaction between a photosensitizer excited by light at a specific wavelength. When associated with phthalocyanines, they are efficient in incorporating target cells and exhibiting high rates of triplet generation. This study aimed to characterize PDT associated with the phototherapeutic agent Phthalomethyl D, developed by the authors, in the process of repair, healing and immune improvement for possible application against SARS-CoV-2. Methods: Sixty-nine mice were used, divided into 2 groups: GI, treated with ILIB laser, without a phototherapeutic agent, and subjected to surgery for viral induction;GII, same as GI plus association of Phthalomethyl D. They were divided into subgroups and reevaluated at 7, 14, and 21 days, and then divided into 3 subgroups of 6 animals each, subjected to treatment at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 5 and 7 days. Results: Both groups had a high rate of partial incision closure and acute inflammatory control. Microscopically, there was a greater amount of amorphous fundamental substance, fibrocytes, fibroblasts, and giant cells and reduction in the number of keratinocytes, in the amount of keratin, and epidermal thickness in GII than in GI. Conclusions: PDT with Phthalomethyl D stimulates the processes of healing/repair and immunomodulation during viral infection, initially favoring the inflammatory response and, after 21 days, contributing to the anti-inflammatory response profile, making this approach possible in the treatment of individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the circulation of Chicken Anemia Virus (CAV), Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV), Avian Reovirus (ARV) and Avian Encephalomyelitis virus (AEV) in properties of backyard chickens and carry out an epidemiological analysis. We evaluated 200 samples of chickens from 19 backyard chicken property. Only one property (P10) did not present serological titers for the diseases evaluated. This property is close to industrial farms as well as the other properties, however, P10 remained a few years without the breeding of chicks and these were the first poultry to be housed on site. This reinforces the importance of the fallow period for poultry production. The prevalence of virus-seroreactive birds was 78% (156/200), 64.5% (129/200), 78% (156/200), 78% (156/200) for CAV, IBDV, ARV and, EA, respectively. All the free-range farms studied are within a radius of 500 meters to 6 Km away from some establishments of industrial poultry. There was a correlation between serological titers for CAV and the frequency of disease in poultry (r = 0.6178). In places where birds are frequently sick, 30.76% reported that the disease occurs in chicks, 30.76% in broilers, 23.07% in broiler chickens and 7.69% in birds of all ages. Birds get sick more often in the summer period. The owners reported that the most common signs of disease were respiratory signs (snoring and nasal discharge) (46.15%), diarrhea (30.76%), and paralysis of wings and/or paws (38.46%). There was a correlation between the presence of untreated water in the property and serological titers for ARV (r = 0.5576). This report draws attention not only to high serological prevalence for the viruses studied but also important epidemiological aspects of backyard chicken diseases that may indirectly influence the industrial production.

Introduction: The incidence of lesions of sensory and motor nerves associated with oral and maxillofacial surgery is often underestimated, representing around 32.0% of all lesions, and orthognathic surgery contributes 12.3% to these lesions. Thus, the use of piezosurgery (PiZCi) has been indicated in several procedures within oral and maxillofacial surgery due to a number of advantages over conventional drill and saw techniques. Objective: to analyze the main literature on the use of the piezoelectric device in relation to the use of drills and to orthognathic surgery in dentistry. Methods: A total of 41 articles were found involving Orthognathic Surgery, Piezoelectric Device, Drills Device, Saws Device, and Efficiency. Initially, it was held the exclusion existing title and duplications following the interest described this work. After this process, the summaries were evaluated, and a new exclusion was held. 29 articles were included and discussed in this study. Initially, the keywords were determined by searching the DeCS tool (Descriptors in Health Sciences, BIREME base) and later verified and validated by MeSh system (Medical Subject Headings, the US National Library of Medicine). Results and conclusion: It was concluded that the piezoelectric device has excelled with an effective surgical technique, being able to be indicated in the most diverse areas of the oral surgery, providing accurate, clean and minimally traumatic osteotomies for the soft tissues, intraoperative bleeding, when compared to conventional surgery using drills and/or saws.
