Objective:To investigate correlates of resistance to G1 nematode infection in Nigerian West African dwarf(WAD) ***:Thirty three sheep were randomly assigned to two groups, A(n=27) which were used for experimental infections,and B(n=6) which served as uninfected *** infected animal received week.y escalating infections with infective larvae(60% Haemonchus contortus(***) and 40%Trichostrongylus colubriformis(***) for 4 *** responses of all the infected and control sheep were assessed by faecal egg count(FEC),worm burden(Wb),pack.d cell volume(PCV),body weight(Bwt).and body condition score(BCS).On the basis of their individual faecal egg output,Lambs in group A with epg≤1 000 on any sampling day were classified as low faecal egg count(LFEC) phenotype(n = 16),those with epg between 1 000 and 10 000 as intermediate(n=5) and lambs with epg > 10 000 as high feacal egg count(HFEC) phenotype(n=6).Results:The difference between the FEC classes was highly significant(P=0.001).The BCS and weight gained at the end of the experiment by the control and LFEC sheep was significandy higher(P≤0.05) than those of the intermediate and HFEC *** was a significant and negative correlation between the parasitological measures and the trio of BCS,PCV and Bwt of ***:The result of the study indicated that the FEC,weight gain,PCV,and BCS are correlates and potential selection crileria of G1 nematode resistant WAD sheep.

The hematological lesions consequent upon velogenic Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infection were investigated in 6-week.old duck. and chick.ns. Following intramuscular inoculation, the results indicated significantly lower (p k.d cell volume (PCV) in infected chick.ns (IC) on days 3 - 9 post inoculation (PI) and in infected duck. (ID) on days 3 - 15 PI. The hemoglobin concentrations were significantly lower (p k. when compared with the chick.ns. The severity of this virus infection in chick.ns and the mild clinical signs and lesions presented by duck. showed that duck. are far less susceptible than chick.ns.

Assessment of the Willingness to Buy and the Use of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) among Caregivers of Under-Five Children Attending Immunization Clinics in a Private Tertiary Hospital in Plateau State, Nigeria

Introduction: Malaria control becomes effective if countries adopt the World Health Organization & Global Malaria Programme (WHO/GMP) recommendation with includes diagnosis of malaria cases and treatment with effective medicines, distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS). Ownership and utilization of mosquito nets for malaria prevention is still sub-optimal with only 62% ownership of at least one mosquito net and only 37% of children using the nets. This seek. to investigate the willingness to buy and the use ITN use among caregivers of under five children attending immunization clinic in Bingham University Teaching Hospital. Methodology: A descriptive cross sectional study design carried out among 242 caregivers of all ages and sex of under-five children attending immunization clinic at Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH) in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. A Simple Random Sampling technique was used to select respondents. Findings: Two hundred and sixteen 216 (89.3%) of the children use ITNs, majority of the children 190 (78.5%) slept under ITN the night before the interview, 226 (93.4%) owned ITNs, 156 (64.5%) got the ITNs for free while 60 (24.8%) paid for it and majority 172 (71.1%) of the children use ITN every night. Tertiary education, having much younger children (less than 3 years) and perception as a means of malaria prevention were associated with higher use of ITNs. Majority 220 (90.9%) the caregivers were willing to buy ITN and also recommend ITN to others. Caregivers who were traders and civil servants were willing to buy ITN than farmers, tertiary education, having children 1 - 3 months old, and owning 3 or more ITNs was associated with willingness to buy ITNs. To investigate if Aluminium-Magnesium Silicate (AMS) could mak. drugs regain effects against resistant pathogens, its effect was tested on sulphadimidine against sulphadimidine-resistant Escherichia coli. Two groups of chick. infected with sulphadimidine-resistant E. coli were treated at sulphadimidine dose rate of 1 g/litre of drink.ng water, with sulphadimidine and with an AMS-sulphadimidine drug formulation, respectively. Two other groups were similarly treated at sulphadimidine dose rate of 0.75 g/litre, while the fifth group served as control. Mean titres of the bacterium in bile of the chick. were compared. Titres, 119,200 ± 55,800 CFU/mL of the group treated with sulphadimidine at rate of 1 g/ litre and 14,800 ± 1700 CFU/mL of the group treated at rate of 0.75 g/litre, did not vary from 33,200 ± 5200 CFU/mL of the control (P > 0.05) but 295,200 ± 106,400 CFU/ml of the group treated at rate of 1 g/litre, with the AMS-sulpha- dimidine drug was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of the control while 5200 ± 1400 CFU/mL of the group treated at dose of 0.75 g/litre, with the AMS-sulphadimidine drug, reduced significantly (P < 0.05).
