Viral Acute Respiratory Infections in Central African Republic Children: Epidemiological and Clinical Aspects

Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are recognized as an important cause of morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization among children in developing countries. Objectives: To identify the respiratory viruses circulating in Central African children before the SARS-COV2 pandemic and to assess the clinical manifestations. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, multicenter study, run from March 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020. Children aged 28 days to 15 year-old, with respiratory symptoms ≤10 days had been included. Nasopharyngeal swabs were taken and sent to the Institute Pasteur in Bangui (WHO National Referral Center for influenza). Virus research was done by cell and molecular culture techniques. Data were recorded and processed with Access 2019 software, then analyzed with STATA version 14 software. Chi-square test and ANOVA test were used to compare proportions at the p 0.05 threshold. Results: Out of 659 children included during the study period, viruses were identified in 231 children, for an overall positivity rate of 35.05% (231/659). Rhinoviruses (RV) and influenza viruses were found in 66.23% and 16.88% respectively. Virus-virus co-infections were found in 10 (10/231) children (4.32%). Children under 5 years of age were more represented (78.60%). The main reasons for consultation were: fever (96.20%), cough (95.45%), runny nose (78.5%), and breathing difficulty (30.50%). ILI (Influenza-Like Illness) was found in 71.02% versus 28.98% of SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infection). There was a statistically significant association between age 5 years and severity of acute respiratory infection (p = 0.001). The outcome was known for the 122 children at the CHUPB site with a mortality rate of 17.21% (n = 21). Conclusion: Viral ARI is common in children in Central African Republic. Care givers should think about it in order to reduce the inappropriate prescription of antibiotics.

Assessment of Floristic Diversity at Two Protected Sites on the Outskirts of Sena Oura National Park, Chad

Two protected sites located on the outskirts of the Sena Oura National Park (PNSO) in West Mayo-Kebbi cover an area of 1800 m2 is pattern choose in pastoral enclave in both village. This study was undertaken to highlight the floristic diversity of the herbaceous and woody vegetation on these sites in the offing to know the ability of charge into UBT that most support the park peripheral. It took place on two experimental sites on a natural course in two villages: Wazetelan and Massang. The approach used for the study was a survey using the systematic sampling method and a 30 m × 30 m plot. The survey consisted in listing all the taxa in a floristically homogeneous plot, each assigned the Braun-Blanquet dominance abundance coefficient. These surveys revealed a floristic richness of 73 species, 58 genera, including 46 herbaceous and 26 woody species. The Shannon result gives H1' = 0.12 bit for herbaceous species and H2' = 0.44 bit for woody species, meaning that the herbaceous and woody populations of all the surveys have a very low species diversity, as H' < 3 according to the Shannon index assessment threshold. Herbaceous species are divided into 13 families and 33 genera. The most represented families are Fabaceae (27.3%) and Poaceae (21.9%). Most of the other families (1.3%) have only one species, if any. Herbaceous species are divided into 33 genera grouped into 13 families. The most represented families are Fabaces (16 species), 34%, and Poaceae (12 species), 26%. The 26 woody species, most of which come from itinerant surveys, are distributed across 24 genera and 12 families, the most important of which is Fabaceae with 09 species (34.6%). This floristic assessment, in terms of quantity and quality, has enabled us to estimate the carrying capacity of the two pastoral enclaves in Dari and Goumadji cantons, and to guide the government’s actions with regard to rangeland management.

Abdomino-Scrotal Hydrocele in Infants: A Case Report

Introduction: Abdomino-scrotal hydrocele (HAS) is a form of hydrocele in which there is an hourglass communication between a hydrocele and the abdominal cavity through the inguinal canal. We report in this study the first case of abdomino-scrotal hydrocele from our center, discovered incidentally intraoperatively and successfully treated, in a 14-month-old infant. Case Report: A 14-month-old infant with no previous history was admitted for an acute left scrotal swelling. Initial examination revealed a left scrotal swelling, painless and non-expansive, with a palpated testicle. The transillumination test was positive. Contralateral testis and scrotum were normal. Elsewhere, the physical examination was unremarkable. In view of these signs, we concluded that the patient had a left vaginal hydrocele and recommended surgery. No radiological examination was ordered. The preoperative work-up was normal. After a left inguinal incision, exploration revealed an inguinal pouch. The presence of a second intra-abdominal pouch was suspected, given the continuity of the scrotal sac through the inguinal canal. This was larger than the first. The pouches were resected, and the inguinal canal closed. The left testicle appeared normal. Postoperative follow-up was straightforward, with a 12-month postoperative follow-up. Conclusion: HAS is a rare pathology in children and is still little-known by some practitioners. It should be considered in infants presenting with a hydrocele.

The comparative study of electrical and hydrogeological soundings is being carried out on the site of the Jean Lorougnon Guédé University in Daloa, in central-western Côte d’Ivoire. The aim of this study is to determine the similarities in the weathering profile obtained by the hydrogeological surveys and the electrical surveys. The methodology is based on a comparative study of the characteristics of the weathering profile (number of layers, thickness of weathering and number of water inlets). The results show that the electrical sounding curves are of the KH type, giving 4 geological layers. The first layer corresponds to topsoil with a thickness of less than 1 m. The second corresponds to a thicker lateritic clay formation (20 m on average). The third layer is granitic arena, locally up to 30 m thick. Below this is the fractured granitic basement. The results also show that most of the results from the electrical boreholes are consistent with those from the boreholes. Differences exist and are essentially due to the shape of certain electrical sounding curves and to the driller’s assessment of the interfaces between the geological formations.

A Comparative Study of the Technological Characteristics of Cotton Fibers from Two Types of Gins in Côte d’Ivoire

Production of this crop is experiencing significant challenges, resulting in a decline in seed and fiber quality. To address this challenge, generations of high-performance cotton plants of the Gossypium hirsutum L. species have been developed and are currently being commercialized. This study evaluated the impact of gin types on the agro-industrial quality of cotton in Côte d’Ivoire. To this end, cotton from the G3, R1, and R2 generations was harvested, sampled, and ginned on machines with 10 and 170 saws in the localities of Ouangolodougou, Ferkessédougou, Korhogo, M’Bengué, Boundiali, Séguéla, and Mankono, as well as at the Centre National de Recherche Agronomique CNRA) in Bouaké. The results demonstrated that cotton fibers obtained from ginning on 10-saw machines exhibited superior quality compared to those from 170-saw machines. Fiber length, fiber length uniformity, and short fiber rate exhibited the highest deviations according to gin type. The use of 170-saw gins resulted in a notable decline in quality. Conversely, micronaire index, fiber tenacity and elongation, and reflectance remained consistent across machine types. These results will enable us to more effectively regulate and advise cotton-processing factories, which primarily utilize 170-saw gins to enhance agro-industrial quality in Côte d’Ivoire. Furthermore, these results will assist breeders in incorporating them into their processes to enhance the quality of the varieties they offer to farmers.

Discrete element method simulation of segregation pattern in a sinter cooler charging chute system

This paper presents the simulation of material flows in the large-scale charging chute of Fos-Sur-Mer sinter cooler plant by using three-dimensional Discrete Element Method(DEM).As a result of granular flows in the chute,segregation patterns are formed at the charging *** sinter material is modelled as dry particles and their size distribution in the simulation is larger than in the reality to keep the simulation in a reasonable run *** calibration tests are performed to specify the DEM contact parameters in order to replicate the behavior observed during experiments with the virtual sinter *** DEM model is found to be in good agreement with a segregation measurement.A sensitivity analysis using different particle sizes shows that the segregation patterns are not affected by the different sizes used for fine ***,the filling ratio in the charging system is varied in the model and shows that a high filling ratio leads to less segregation when exiting the charging *** DEM model is used to analyze the granular flows in the charging chute,understand the material behavior and optimize the sinter cooling efficiency.

Deposition rate and morphology of carbon nanotubes at different positions in a CVD reactor

Carbon nanotubes （CNTs） were synthesized through the catalytic decomposition of a ferrocene-xylene mixture in a horizontal chemical vapor deposition reactor. The deposition rate of CNTs along the axial direction was measured. The morphology of CNTs was observed by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. The results showed that the deposition rate of CNTs along the axial direction first increased and later decreased, the position achieving the maximum deposition rate was influenced by the operating conditions. The morphologies of CNTs also changed along the axial direction.

Modeling novel methodologies for unmanned aerial systems–Applications to the UAS-S4 Ehecatl and the UAS-S45 Bálaam

The rising demand for Unmanned Aerial Systems(UASs) to perform tasks in hostile environments has emphasized the need for their simulation models for the preliminary evaluations of their missions. The efficiency of the UAS model is directly related to its capacity to estimate its flight dynamics with minimum computational resources. The literature describes several techniques to estimate accurate aircraft flight dynamics. Most of them are based on system identification. This paper presents an alternative methodology to obtain complete model of the S4 and S45 unmanned aerial systems. The UAS-S4 and the UAS-S45 models were divided into four sub-models, each corresponding to a specific discipline: aerodynamics, propulsion, mass and inertia, and actuator. The‘‘aerodynamic" sub-model was built using the Fderivatives in-house code, which is an improvement of the classical DATCOM procedure. The ‘‘propulsion" sub-model was obtained by coupling a two-stroke engine model based on the ideal Otto cycle and a Blade Element Theory(BET) analysis of the propeller. The ‘‘mass and the inertia" sub-model was designed utilizing the Raymer and DATCOM methodologies. A sub-model of an actuator using servomotor characteristics was employed to complete the model. The total model was then checked by validation of each submodel with numerical and experimental data. The results indicate that the obtained model was accurate and could be used to design a flight simulator.

Battery energy storage systems(BESSs)need to comply with grid code and fault ride through(FRT)requirements during disturbances whether they are in charging or discharging *** literature has shown that constant charging current control of BESSs in charging mode can prevent BESSs from complying with emerging grid codes such as the German grid code under stringent unbalanced fault *** address this challenge,this paper proposes a new FRTactivated dual control strategy that consists of switching from constant battery current control to constant DC-link voltage control through a positive droop *** results show that the strategy ensures proper DC-link voltage and current management as well as adequate control of the positive-and negative-sequence active and reactive currents according to the grid code *** is also shown that the proposed FRT control strategy is tolerant to initial operating conditions of BESS plant,grid code requirements,and fault severity.

Introduction Understanding the processes involved in how and why animals com- municate has long been fascinating to scientists （Darwin 1871 ）. This endeavor plays a key role in the pursuit of reaching a better compre- hension both of the rules involved in organizing the animal societies around us （Freeberg et al. 2012） and of the evolutionary bases under- lying our own vocal communication system： human language （Fitch 2010）. Moreover, in recent years, the type and function of informa- tion conveyed by animal vocalizations have also attracted research interest in the field of ecology （see Sueur and Farina 2015）.
