Evaluation of bacterial contamination and medium-term oncological outcomes of intracorporeal anastomosis for colon cancer:A propensity score matching analysis

Endoplasmic reticulum stress transducer old astrocyte specifically induced substance contributes to astrogliosis after spinal cord injury

Old astrocyte specifically induced substance （OASIS） is an endoplasmic reticulum （ER） stress transducer specifically expressed in astrocytes and osteoblasts. OASIS regulates the differentiation of neural precursor cells into astrocytes in the central nervous system. This study aimed to elucidate the involvement of ER stress responses stimulated via OASIS in astrogliosis following spinal cord injury. In a mouse model of spinal cord contusion injury, OASIS mRNA and protein expression were evaluated at days 7 and 14. A significant increase in OASIS mRNA on day 7 and an increase in protein on days 7 and 14 was observed in injured spinal cords. Immunostaining on day 7 revealed co-localization of OASIS and astrocytes in the periphery of the injury site. Furthermore, anti-OASIS small interfering RNA （siRNA） was injected at the injury sites on day 5 to elucidate the function of OASIS. Treatment with anti-OASIS siRNA caused a significant decrease in OASIS mRNA on day 7 and protein on days 7 and 14, and was associated with the inhibition of astrogliosis and hindlimb motor function recovery. Results of our study show that OASIS expression synchronizes with astrogliosis and is functionally associated with astrogliosis after spinal cord injury.

Moisture Detection of SF_6 Gas Instruments by Solid Electrolyte

Humidity measurement in a very low moisture atmosphere was studied by using solid electrolyte film coated with porous electrodes,considering its application to the moisture monitoring of SF_6 gas-insulated high voltage instruments such as gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and gas circuit breakers (GCBs).Compared to the AC impedance values measured in an ambient atmosphere where the moisture atmosphere is far higher than that in these instruments,considerably large impedance values were obtained in a very low moisture *** impedance was systematically measured in accordance with the conditions of these instruments whose moisture contents were less than 1 000×10^(-6).A good correlation was obtained between the impedance values and the moisture *** frequency characteristics of the impedance were analyzed based on a conventional equivalent circuit where a number of CR circuits were connected in *** the dielectric relaxation of each circuit,it was found that the frequency characteristics of the impedance can be explained by the equivalent circuit. Two semicircles were clearly obtained in the Cole-Cole impedance plot which are thought to reflect the impedance characteristics of the film and the *** AC impedance can be a good indicator of the moisture content of SF_6 gas-insulated high voltage instruments.

Multiple carcinosarcomas of the esophagus with adenocarcinomatous components: A case report

BACKGroUND Carcinosarcoma(spindle cell carcinoma) of the esophagus is an extremely rare event;the etiology and origins of this neoplasm have not yet been ***-mesenchymal transition(EMT) has been associated with invasion and metastasis, and may be related to the generation of a stem cell population within this *** SUMMARY We present the case of a 61-year-old male with nausea and fever. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed the presence of type 1 and 0-Ⅱc lesions located 35 cm from the incisors toward the esophago-gastric *** esophagectomy was performed. Macroscopic analysis revealed three polypoid lesions in the abdominal esophagus that accompanied the main lesion in the lower thoracic esophagus and 0-Ⅱc lesions that spread continuously with them. Histologically, the lesions included proliferating spindle cells. Adenocarcinomatous components were detected in a section near the foot, and squamous cell carcinoma was identified in the mucosa at the base of the *** patient was diagnosed with multiple carcinosarcomas, staged at pT1b(SM3),pN1(#110, #7), cM0, Stage Ⅱ(sarcomatous metastasis to the lymph nodes).Spindle cells did not express E-cadherin but were positive for EMT markers,including zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1, TWIST, and snail family transcriptional repressor 2. The sigma receptor (Sig-R) was first reported by Martin et al.(1976) and was initially classified into the opioid receptor family. However, Sig-R was subsequently found to differ from the opioid receptor in various studies including ligand binding assays and autoradiography analysis (Tam and Cook, 1984). Sig-R is widely distributed in tissues such as central nervous, digestive, immune, and endocrine tissues. There are two types of Sig-R: sigma-1 (Sig-1R) and sigma-2 receptors (Sig-2R).

Splenectomy in living donor liver transplantation and risk factors of portal vein thrombosis

Background:Graft inflow modulation(GIM)during adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation(LDLT)is a common strategy to avoid small-for-size syndrome,and some transplant surgeons attempt small size graft strategy with frequent GIM procedures,which are mostly performed by splenectomy,in ***,splenectomy can cause serious complications such as portal vein thrombosis and overwhelming postsplenectomy ***:Forty-eight adult-to-adult LDLT recipients were enrolled in this study and retrospectively *** applied the graft selection criteria,which.routinely fulfill graft-to-recipient weight ratio≥0.8%,and consider GIM as a backup strategy for high portal venous pressure(PVP).Results:In our current strategy of LDLT,splenectomy was performed mostly due to hepatitis C and splenic arterial aneurysms,but splenectomy for GIM was intended to only one patient(2.1%).The final PVP values≤20 mmHg were achieved in all recipients,and no significant difference was observed in patient survival or postoperative clinical course based on whether splenectomy was performed or ***,6 of 18 patients with splenectomy(33.3%)developed postsplenectomy portal vein thrombosis(PVT),while none of the 30 patients without splenectomy developed PVT after *** was identified as a risk factor of PVT in this study(Prol PVP,and allowed GIM to be reserved as a backup *** should be avoided as much as possible during LDLT because splenectomy was found to be a definite risk factor of *** splenectomy cases with a lower final PVP,a close follow-up is required for early detection and treatment of PVT.

Classification of rectal cancer according to recurrence types-comparison of Japanese guidelines and Western guidelines

BACKGroUND Rectal cancer is characterized by more local recurrence(LR)and lung metastasis than colon ***,the diagnosis of rectal cancer is not standardized as there is no global consensus on its definition and *** classification of rectal cancer differs between Japanese and Western *** To clarify the characteristics of rectal cancer by comparing the tumor location and characteristics of rectal cancer with those of colon cancer according to each set of *** A total of 958 patients with Stage II and III colorectal cancer were included in the analysis:607 with colon cancer and 351 with rectal *** of rectal cancers was assessed by enema examination and rigid *** to Japan guidelines,rectal cancer is classified as Rb(below the peritoneal inversion),Ra(between the inferior margin of second sacral vertebrae and Rb)or RS(between Ra and sacral promontory).RESULTS There were no significant differences between RS rectal cancer and colon cancer in the rates of liver and lung metastasis or *** metastasis and LR were significantly more common among Rb rectal cancer(in Japan)than in colon cancer(P=0.0043 and P=0.0002,respectively).Lung metastases and LR occurred at significantly higher rates in rectal cancer measuring≤12 cm and≤10 cm than in colon cancers(P=0.0117,P=0.0467,P=0.0036,P=0.0010).Finally,the rates of liver metastasis,lung metastasis,and LR in rectal cancers measuring 11 cm to 15 cm were 6.9%,2.8%,and 5.7%,*** were equivalent to the rates in colon *** High rectal cancer may be treated with the same treatment strategies as colon *** was no difference in the classification of colorectal cancer between Japan and Western countries.

Sensitive and Reproducible Photocatalytic Activity Evaluation Instrument for Transparent Coatings

A new photocatalytic activity (PC) measurement instrument based on the measurement of the photo-induced reduction of Ag ions was proposed. The feature of this system is to perform “ultraviolet irradiation for PC activation” and “Ag film thickness determination for PC evaluation” simultaneously and automatically. Realizing a PC measurement system with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, easy operation and reproducibility, which is especially suited for the PC measurement of the coatings on transparent substrates.

Self Assembly of Honeycomb TiO<sub>2</sub>Coatings by Tea-Leaf Extracts as the Dispersoids

Photo catalytic TiO2 coatings with well defined honeycomb structure were successfully self-assembled on glass substrates by a simple “dip and burn solgel method“. The crux of this new method is that the starting material for the sol-gel coating (the water solution of ammonium titanium citrate) was “doped” with “tea-leaf extracts”. Tea-leaf extracts were completely dissolved in the water solution of ammonium titanium citrate and nucleate uniformly during the drying procedure of the coating precursor formation. This uniformly dispersed nucleation of the “tea-leaf extracts (tannin, catechin…)” were extracted during calcinations and leaving honeycomb-cell like nano-structure in the TiO2 coatings. Self-assembled cells were uniformly distributed in the TiO2 coatings and the diameter of the cells was in the range of 200 - 1000 nm. Fine honeycomb structures were clearly observed with microscopic observations.

Prosodically Rich Speech Synthesis Interface Using Limited Data of Celebrity Voice

To enhance the communication between human and robots at home in the future, speech synthesis interfaces are indispensable that can generate expressive speech. In addition, synthesizing celebrity voice is commercially important. For these issues, this paper proposes techniques for synthesizing natural-sounding speech that has a rich prosodic personality using a limited amount of data in a text-to-speech (TTS) system. As a target speaker, we chose a well-known prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, who has a good prosodic personality in his speeches. To synthesize natural-sounding and prosodically rich speech, accurate phrasing, robust duration prediction, and rich intonation modeling are important. For these purpose, we propose pause position prediction based on conditional random fields (CRFs), phone-duration prediction using random forests, and mora-based emphasis context labeling. We examine the effectiveness of the above techniques through objective and subjective evaluations.
