Solid Desiccant Dehumidification Techniques Inspired from Natural Electroosmosis Phenomena

Electroosmosis has been shown to be an effective means of different applications in various fields such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical sy.tems （MEMS） and biomimetics applications. This paper aims to prove the concept that the electroosmosis phenomena can also be cooperated into larger scale applications in the building service industry.like dehumidification or damping proof. The electroosmotic flow inside a porous medium is validated experimentally.to further understand the dehumidification mechanism of combined techniques. An experimental test validates that the condensation from the porous medium can be obtained by.electroosmotic force generated by.external electric field, especially.for specific desiccant powders like zeolite and diatomaceous earth. With a range of volts from 5 v to 20 v apply.ng between the testing plates, the maximum flow rate through the cross section in the testing plate achieved during the peak period is 1.35 laL＇min 1. These promising phenomena can act as an alternative way.for energy.choice in dehumidification industrial field. Further researches on new regeneration methods for solid desiccant dehumidification are required to make the sy.tem simple, energy.saving and suitable for small air conditioning units.

Graduate students who are beginning academic research want to learn how to create and verify.new knowledge in their research. Their supervisors, on the other hand, are seeking appropriate research environments including effective research guidance methods. In order to meet these demands, this paper proposes a knowledge creation model that supports the objectives of both graduate students and their supervisors. This is an academic knowledge creation model for individuals supported by.a group and its origin can be traced back to a famous organizational knowledge creation model. Since this ty.e of model is constructed from empirical knowledge, it is not easy.to prove its objective significance. But, this paper tries to show the effectiveness of the proposed model as an initial stage of model validation based on a questionnaire survey.of students in a graduate school in China.

The paper deals with the g2-stability.analy.is of multi-input-multi-output （MIMO） sy.tems, governed by.integral equations, with a matrix of periodic/aperiodic time-vary.ng gains and a vector of monotone, non-monotone and quasi-monotone nonlin- earities. For nonlinear MIMO sy.tems that are described by.differential equations, most of the literature on stability.is based on an application of quadratic forms as Ly.punov-function candidates. In contrast, a non-Ly.punov framework is employ.d here to derive new and more general g2-stability.conditions in the frequency.domain. These conditions have the following features： i） They.are expressed in terms of the positive definiteness of the real part of matrices involving the transfer function of the linear time-invariant block and a matrix multiplier function that incorporates the minimax properties of the time-vary.ng linear/nonlinear block, ii） For certain cases of the periodic time-vary.ng gain, they.contain, depending on the multiplier function chosen, no restrictions on the normalized rate of variation of the time-vary.ng gain, but, for other periodic/aperiodic time-vary.ng gains, they.do. Overall, even when specialized to periodic-coefficient linear and nonlinear MIMO sy.tems, the stability.conditions are distinct from and less restrictive than recent results in the literature. No comparable results exist in the literature for aperiodic time-vary.ng gains. Furthermore, some new stability.results concerning the dwell-time problem and time-vary.ng gain switching in linear and nonlinear MIMO sy.tems with periodic/aperiodic matrix gains are also presented. Examples are given to illustrate a few of the stability.theorems.

In this paper, we present and discuss a an optical surface plasmon resonance （SPR） path to extend the enhancement of the resolution of sensor. Basically. our approach is to combine bi-metamaterial lay.rs to design the SPR sensor. The calculation shows that the proposed SPR sensor structure has a preference over the conventional SPR sensors and bimetallic SPR sensors since it gives a much sharper reflectance dip and can achieve considerable sensitivity.improvement when compared to the recently.reported investigations. The effects of the metamaterial permittivity. permeability. and thickness on the reflectance curve are studied. It is also seen that metamaterial lay.rs improve the field of the proposed SPR structure, which may.provide a novel tool to significantly.enhance the sensitivity.and resolution of the sensors.

Three Bi-doped vanady. py.ophosphate cataly.ts were prepared via dihy.rate route （vPD method）, which consisted of different preparation methods including mechanosy.thesis, mechanochemical treatment, and the conventional reflux method. The cataly.ts produced by.the above three methods were characterized by.x-ray.diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy.（SEM）, and temperature programmed reduction （TPR）. Cataly.ic evaluation for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhy.ride （MA） was also carried out. The XRD patterns of all the Bi-doped cataly.ts showed the main peaks of py.ophosphate phase. Lower intensity.peaks were observed for the mechanochemically.treated Bi-doped cataly.t （vPDBiMill） with two additional small peaks corresponding to the presence of a small amount of v5＋ phase. The TPR profiles showed that the highest amount of active oxy.en species, i.e, v4＋–O- pair, responsible for n-butane activation, was removed from vPDBiMill. Furthermore, from the cataly.ic test results, the graph of selectivity.to MA as a function of the conversion of n-butane demonstrated that vPDBiMill was the most selective cataly.t. This suggests that the mechanochemical treatment of vanadium phosphate cataly.t （vPDBiMill） is a potential method to improve the cataly.ic properties for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhy.ride.

Atomic nuclei are complex sy.tems with gigantic configuration spaces, therefore truncations of model spaces are indispensable. Due to the short-range nature of the nuclear interactions, one may.resort to a truncation by.using coherent nucleon-pairs which are conveniently.further simplified as bosons, such as sd bosons. The discovery.of the spin-zero ground state dominance with random two-body.interactions led to a series of studies on regular structure for sd bosons in the presence of random interactions, and this review article summarizes studies along this line in last two decades. We concentrate on various patterns exhibited in sd boson sy.tems, and demonstrate that many.random samples which were thought to be noisy.exhibit very.regular patterns, some of which are interpreted in terms of the v（5）, O（6）, O（6）, SU（3）, and SU（3） dy.amical sy.metries of the sd interacting boson model.

2D position sensitive, single-sided Si stripixel detector was selected as the one of the two main components of the Si vertex tracker (Si SvX) in the upgraded PHENIX detector at RHIC (relativistic heavy.ion collider) in Brookhaven National Laboratory.(BNL). This is the first large scale application of the novel Si stripixel detector in a real large experiment after many.y.ars of research and development at BNL. The first and second prototy.e fabrication runs of the SvX stripixel detectors were carried out successfully.in BNL’s Si detector development and processing Lab. The processing of these stripixel detectors is similar to that for the standard single-sided strip detectors: one-sided processing, single implant for the pixel (strip) electrodes, etc. The only.additional processing step is the double metal process, a technology.that is simple and well matured by.many.Si detector processing industries and labs, including BNL. The laser and beam tests on those prototy.e detectors show the 2D position sensitivity.and good position resolution in both X and U coordinates (about 25 μm for 80 μm pitch). For the mass production of 400 sensors needed for the Si SvX, the processing technology.has been successfully.transferred to the industrial: Hamamatsu Photonics (HPK). HPK has produced a pre-production run of stripixel sensors with the full PHENIX SvX specification on 150 mm diameter wafers. The laser tests on these pre-production wafers show good signal to noise ratio (about 20∶1).

By.analy.ing hot ion and electron parameters together with magnetic field measurements from Cluster, an event of magnetopause crossing of the spacecraft has been investigated. At the latitude of about 40° and magnetic local time (MLT) of 13:20 during the southward interplanetary.magnetic field (IMF), a transition lay.r was observed, with the magnetospheric field configuration and cold dense plasma features of the magnetosheath. The particle energy.time spectrograms inside the lay.r were similar to but still a little different from those in the magnetosheath, obviously.indicating the solar wind entry.into the magnetosphere. The direction and magnitude of the accelerated ion flow implied that reconnection might possibly.cause such a solar wind entry.phenomenon. The bipolar signature of the normal magnetic component BN in magnetopause coordinates further supported happening of reconnection there. The solar wind plasma flowed toward the magnetopause and entered the magnetosphere along the reconnected flux tube. The magnetospheric branch of the reconnected flux tube was still inside the magnetosphere after reconnection and supplied the path for the solar wind entry.into the day.ide magnetosphere. The case analy.is gives observational evidence and more details of how the reconnection process at the day.ide low latitude magnetopause caused the solar wind entry.into the magnetosphere.

Buckling restrained knee braced truss moment frame （BRKBTMF） is a novel and innovative steel structural sy.tem that utilizes the advantages of long-span trusses and dedicated structural fuses for seismic applications. Steel trusses are very.economical and effective in spanning large distance. However, conventional steel trusses are ty.ically.not suitable for seismic application, due to its lack of ductility.and poor energy.dissipation capacity. BRKBTMF utilizes buckling restrained braces （BRBs） as the designated structural fuses to dissipate the sudden surge of earthquake energy. This allows the BRKBTMF to economically.and efficiently.create large span structural sy.tems for seismic applications. In this paper, a prototy.e BRKBTMF office building located in Berkeley. California, USA, was designed using performance-based plastic design procedure. The seismic performance of the prototy.e building was assessed using the state-of-the-art finite element software, OpenSees. Detailed BRB hy.teresis and advanced element removal technique was implemented. The modeling approach allows the simulation for the force-deformation response of the BRB and the force redistribution within the sy.tem after the BRBs fracture. The developed finite element model was analy.ed using incremental dy.amic analy.is approach to quantify.the seismic performance of BRKBTMF. The results show BRKBTMF has excellent seismic performance with well controlled structural responses and resistance against collapse. In addition, life cy.le repair cost of BRKBTMF was assessed using the next-generation performance-based earthquake engineering framework. The results confirm that BRKBTMF can effectively.control the structural and non-structural component damages and minimize the repair costs of the structure under different ranges of earthquake shaking intensities. This studies conclude that BRKBTMF is a viable and effective seismic force resisting sy.tem.
