Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is characterized histologically by hyalinosis and sclerosis of glomeruli associated or not with podocyte involvement. The objective of our work was to clarify the epidemiological aspects and histological variants of FSGS in Côte d’Ivoire. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive retrospective study, conducted from January 2015 to December 2019 using the renal biopsy registers (RB) of the Pathological Anatomy and Cytology departments of the Teaching Hospital of Cocody and Bouake in collaboration with the Nephrology Services of Côte d'Ivoire and the sub-region. The biopsies underwent conventional histopathology and/or immunofluorescence techniques. The parameters analyzed were: frequency, age, gender, proteinuria, biopsy indications and histological aspects and the different correlations between histological aspects and socio-demographic characteristics. Results: FSGS represented 58.1% (n = 104) of glomerular nephropathies. The average age of patients was 32.1 ± 13.3 years, with extremes of 13 and 70 years. The sex ratio was equal to 1. Nephrotic syndrome (68.9%), chronic renal failure (14.3%) and acute renal failure (10.1%) were the main indications for renal biopsy (RB). The mean proteinuria at the time of diagnosis was 4 ± 3.7 g/24 h. It was massive (3.5 g/24 h) in 42.3% of patients. FSGS was primary in 29.8% (n = 31) and secondary in 70.2% (n = 73) of patients, of which 27.9% (n = 35) was due to HIV. According to the Columbia classification, 62.5% NOS type was found;23.1% collapsing type;7.7% tip lesion type;4.8% cell type and 1.9% perihilary type. Conclusion: FSGS is a complex heterogeneous entity. It affects young people in our context with a homogeneous gender distribution. Understanding its histogenesis is essential for optimal patient management.

Post-Operative Peritonitis: Diagnostic Problems, Morbidity and Mortality in Developing Countries

Goal: To study the diagnostic difficulties and post-operative morbidity and mortality of peritonitis. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study about the records of adult patients operated on between 1999 and 2013 whose diagnosis of post-operative peritonitis was made. Results: We achieved 23,573 lanterns and recorded 148 cases of postoperative peritonitis or 0.62%. The medium age was 37.1 ± 17.7 years and the sex ratio was 1.2. The delay between the initial intervention and reoperation was less than 5 days. Factors occurrence of postoperative peritonitis were those related to the initial surgery: septic context 70.8%, emergency surgery 81.1% under the seat mesocolic 25% and 20.3% initial surgical technique. The diagnosis was made preoperatively in 62.2% (n = 92). Ultrasound has found an effusion in 29.7% (n = 44). Cytobactériologic review identified germs in 85.1% (n = 126) and sterile in 12.9% of patients (n = 22). The most frequent etiologies were: 22.9% anastigmatic leak (n = 34), the phoenix abscess in 17.6% (n = 26), iatrogenic perforation 13.5% (n = 20) and digestive fistula 25% (n = 37). Other causes were the stoical necrosis 12.2% (n = 18) and evisceration 8.8% (n = 13). We performed a digestive stoma in 61% (n = 89), a closure of the abdomen bolsters in 8.8% (n = 13), a suture in iatrogenic perforation in 13.5% (n = 20) and washing with drainage in patients with phoenix abscess in 17.6% (n = 26). Morbidity was 22.3% and 53.4% mortality. Conclusion: The diagnosis of post-operative peritonitis is difficult in a developing country. Morbidity and mortality is high. Improved diagnostic tools are needed.

Arid Agroecosystem Shrubs Enhance Enzyme Activities during the Dry Season

In Senegal, in the Sahel region, the agroecosystem is dominated by two Sahelian shrubs able to redistribute water from deep soil to the surface. This study was carried out to determine the impact of these shrubs on soil microbial activity. A 2 × 3 factorial design was set up during the dry and wet season with three soil treatments: rhizospheric, bulk and non-rhizospheric soil. During the dry season, the presence of shrubs resulted in significantly higher phosphatase acid activity for Guiera senegalensis (p chitinase activity (99%) and β-glucosidase (97%). Shrubs maintained a moister environment during the dry season which was critical in stimulating microbial activities;this has significant implications for agroecosystem management in the Sahel.

Anemia in the Elderly: Frequency and Etiologies at University Hospital Center of Point G

Introduction: Older people are exposed to particular health problems that must be taken into account, including anemia defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in people aged 65 and over hemoglobin chU in Mali from January 1st, 2018 to August 31st, 2018, covering all elderly patients. At least 65 years old hospitalized and/or having consulted and presenting with anemia. Anemia was defined as Hb chycardia was the physical sign associated with anemia present in 85.7% of them. The mean hemoglobin level was 9.2 g/dl ± 2.03: thus 50% of the subjects had microcytic and or hypochromic anemia. The etiologies found were infectious in 31.0% of cases, inflammatory in 31.0% of cases, renal in 14.2% of cases. chronic hemorrhage, acute haemorrhage, hemolysis accounted for 2.4% each. We observed 9.5% of unexplained causes. Conclusion: The frequency of anemia is high. Nearly half of the geriatric population has anemia. The lack of means and the nonperformance of the technical platform to perform all examinations in the etiological research of anemia have a significant impact on the rate of unexplained anemias.

Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (IDM) occupies the first place in terms of mortality, among ischemic pathologies. Thrombolysis in the case of medical treatment for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is undoubtedly the most revolutionary performed to date in this context, with a significant reduction in the mortality rate. The aim of our study was to describe the epidemiological aspects, the criteria for myocardial reperfusion post thrombolysis, the complications during thrombolysis and the complications of acute myocardial infarction in the cardiology department of the CHU Ernesto Guevara De La Serna of Las Tunas (Cuba). Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from June 2009 to December 2011. The patients hospitalized during this period in the USIC (coronary intensive care unit) for SCA ST(+) were included in the study. The variables studied were: Age, sex, myocardial reperfusion criteria, complications during thrombolysis and complications of myocardial infarction. Results: A total of 207 patients were included. The male sex represented 72.5% of the cases, giving a sex ratio of 2.63. The age group > 60 years was predominant with 54.2% of the cases. Thrombolysed patients represented 65.2% of the cases.
