C-glycosyl flavonoid orientin alleviates learning and memory impairment by radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation in mice via improving antioxidant defence mechanism

Objective: To investigate the antioxidant efficacy of oral orientin on 900 MHz radiofrequencyelectromagnetic radiation-induced oxidative stress in ***: The mice were randomly allotted into 5 groups consisting of 7 mice each. The deionised water and radiofrequency electromagnetic radiations(RF-EMR) groups were administered with deionised water while orientin was administered to the RF-EMR + low dose of orientin group(10 mg/kg), RF-EMR + high dose of orientin group(20 mg/kg) and high dose of orientin group(20 mg/kg). All the groups except deionised water and high dose groups were exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency-electromagnetic radiation for 28 consecutive days(1 h/day). Learning and memory was assessed via the step-down inhibitory avoidance task. Activities of lipid prexidation and antioxidant enzymes were measured using ***: Radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation caused impairment in learning and memory and reduced activities of brain antioxidant enzymes, increased lipoperoxidation and corticosterone concentration as well as histopathological aberrations in the hippocampal tissues. Conversely, orientin alleviated learning and memory deficit, improved the activities of endogenous antioxidant enzymes and mitigated brain lipoperoxidation and neuronal degeneration in mice exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. Conclusions: Orientin alleviates learning and memory impairment due to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation in mice by improving antioxidant defence mechanism and may be considered as a promising therapeutic agent for improving the antioxidant system of people living in radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation-prone environment.

Assessment of Profit of a Two-Stage Deteriorating Linear Consecutive 2-out-of-3 Repairable System

Most of the researches on profit and cost evaluation of redundant system focus on the effect of failure and repair on revenue generated. However, as these systems continue to work, their strength gradually deteriorates. Where such deterioration occurs, minor and major maintenance is employed to remedy the deterioration. Little or no attention is paid on the effect of deterioration on the impact of deterioration and their maintenance on the revenue generated. In this paper, we study the profit generated of two-stage deteriorating linear consecutive 2-out-of-3 system. Failure, repair and deterioration time are assumed exponential. The explicit expressions of availability, busy period of a repairman and profit function are derived using Kolmogorov’s forward equations method. Various cases are analyzed graphically to investigate the effect of deterioration parameters such as slow deterioration, fast deterioration, and their maintenance such as minor and major minimal maintenance on profit generated.

In this paper, we study the reliability and availability characteristics of a repairable system consisting of two subsystems A and B in series. Subsystem A consists of two units A1 and A2 operating in active parallel while subsystem B is a single unit. Failure and repair times are assumed exponential. The explicit expressions of reliability and availability characteristics like mean time to system failure (MTSF), system availability, busy period and profit function are derived using Kolmogorov forward equations method. Various cases are analyzed graphically to investigate the impacts of system parameters on MTSF, availability, busy period and profit function.

Availability and Profit Optimization of Series-Parallel System with Linear Consecutive Cold Standby Units

In this paper, we study availability and profit optimization of a series-parallel system consisting of three subsystems A, B and C in which A and B are cold standby. Subsystem A consists of linear consecutive k-out-of-n units while subsystems B and C consist of a single unit each. The system works if any of A or B and C work. The objective of this study is to maximize the steady-state availability and profit. To solve the optimization problem, different numbers of units for n = 2, 3, 4, 5 in subsystem A are considered. Explicit expressions for busy period of repairmen, steady-state availability and profit function are derived using linear first order differential equations. Several cases are analyzed graphically for n = 2, 3, 4, 5 to investigate the effects of various system parameters on availability and profit. The paper also presents graphical comparison for specific values of system parameters and finds that the optimal system configuration is when n = 5.

Reliability Modelling and Analysis of Redundant Systems Connected to Supporting External Device for Operation Attended by a Repairman and Repairable Service Station

In this paper, probabilistic models for three redundant configurations have been developed to analyze and compare some reliability characteristics. Each system is connected to a repairable supporting external device for operation. Repairable service station is provided for immediate repair of failed unit. Explicit expressions for mean time to system failure and steady-state availability for the three configurations are developed. Furthermore, we compare the three configurations based on their reliability characteristics and found that configuration II is more reliable and efficient than the remaining configurations.

Evaluation of Economic Importance of Locally Produced Manure over Inorganic Fertilizer for Maize Production: Vegetative Performance and Cost Implication

Background: Crops of economic importance like Maize are preferred to other crops with capacity of giving the highest yields, having the ability to help alleviate poverty within the African continent. The consistent use of inorganic fertilizers has great adverse effect on soil structure. The quest to seek alternative method of boosting maize production is imminent to avoid further soil degradation. Most plants form symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizae and improve nutrients uptake by host plants. Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of mycorrhizae in local manure production on development of maize, in comparison with inorganic fertilizer application and its cost implication. Methods: The experiment involved samples of starter soil from 7 local governments. Organic waste was added to starter soil, each having three replicates. Nine other replicates served as non-inoculated controls and nine served for fertilizer application at 50 g, 100 g and 150 g. One [1] gram of Maize sown in 50 ml pot contains soil at different treatment levels 50 g, 100 g, and 150 g. After two weeks, samples were transplanted in an open field. Results: The result showed plots treated with locally produced fertilizer, significantly influenced plant height, culm diameter, number of leaves and leaf broadness in comparison to inorganic fertilizer, which showed 53%, 47% respectively. Conclusion: Cost production of a bag of organic fertilizer was one-fourth cheaper compared to an inorganic fertilizer price from an open market.

Groundwater Potential Mapping in Lapan Gwari Community Using Integrated Remote Sensing and Electrical Resistivity Soundings

This research aims to address the pressing issue of failed and abandoned wells, causing water scarcity in Lapan Gwari Community, through an improved groundwater exploration approach integrating remote sensing and electrical resistivity soundings. The study area, located within the Zungeru Sheet 163 SE, spans Latitudes 9°30'00"N to 9°32'00"N and Longitudes 6°28'00" to 6°30'00". The surface geologic, structural, and hydrogeological mapping provided essential insights into the hydrogeological framework. Leveraging SRTM DEM data, thematic maps were created for geomorphology, slope, land use, lineament density, and drainage density. These datasets were then integrated using ArcGIS to develop a preliminary groundwater potential zones map. Further investigations were conducted using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and Electrical Resistivity Imaging (2D VES) surveys at targeted locations identified by the preliminary map. Results show that the study area predominantly consists of crystalline rocks of the Nigerian Basement Complex, primarily comprising schist and granite with minor occurrences of quartz vein intrusions. Surface joint directions indicated a dominant NE-SW trend. The VES data revealed three to four geoelectric layers, encompassing the topsoil (1 to 5 m depth, resistivity: 100 Ωm to 300 Ωm), the weathered layer (in the 3-layer system) or fractured layer (in the 4-layer system), and the fresh basement rock characterized by infinite resistivity. The shallow weathered layers (3 to 30 m thickness) are believed to hold aquiferous potential. Hydrogeological interpretation, facilitated by 2D resistivity models, delineated water horizons trapped within clayey sand and weathered/fractured formations. Notably, the aquifer resistivity range was found to be between 3 - 35 m and 100 - 300 Ωm, signifying a promising aquifer positioned at depths of 40 to 88 m. Evaluation of macular choroidal and microvascular network changes by activity scores and serum antibodies in thyroid eye patients and healthy subjects

AIM:To investigate the choroidal thickness and the microvascular network changes around the macula in thyroid eye disease(TED)patients at different stages and the relationship of those changes with risk factors,serum antibodies and the severity of ***:A total of 85 participants were *** participants underwent ophthalmology and endocrinology *** choroidal thickness(SFCT),superficial(s)and deep(d)foveal avascular zone(FAZ)area,mean(m)and central(c)superficial vascular density(SVD),deep vascular density(DVD)measurements of the enrolled cases were performed with Topcon swept source optical coherence tomography(OCT)/OCT angiography(OCTA)DRI OCT *** linear regression analysis was used to explore the associations between SFCT,FAZ area,SVD,DVD and the relevant factors of ***:Those with active TED patients had higher c-DVD and m-DVD levels(P<0.05),however there is no statistically significant difference in SFCT between active and stable TED *** the serum antibodies,it was observed that s-FAZ and d-FAZ increased,c-SVD and m-SVD decreased in patients with high thyroid stimulating hormone-receptor autoantibodies(TRAB)level,whereas SFCT thickened in patients with high levels of both TRAB and human thyroglobulin(hTG).There was no significant difference in SFCT,FAZ,SVD and DVD measurement at gender,between hyperthyroid and euthyroid patients and among those with or without thyroid papillary ***:The results show that both disease activation and serum antibodies differentially affect both superficial and deep retinal vascular *** has also been shown that high serum antibody levels affect choroidal thickness independent of clinical activity.

Familial chylomicronemia syndrome related chronic pancreatitis: a single-center study

BACKGROUND: Hypertriglyceridemia induces acute recurrent pancreatitis, but its role in the etiology of chronic pancreatitis(CP) is controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical laboratory and radiological findings of 7 patients with CP due to type 1 hyperlipidemia compared to CP patients with other or undefined etiological ***: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, laboratory and radiological findings of 7 CP patients with type 1 hyper lipidemia compared to CP patients without hypertriglyceridemia These 7 patients had multiple episodes of acute pancreatitis and had features of CP on abdominal CT, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and/or endoscopic ***: All CP patients were classified into two groups: a group with type 1 hyperlipidemia (n=7) and a group with other etiologies (n=58). The mean triglyceride level was 2323±894mg/dL in the first group. Age at the diagnosis of CP in the first group was significantly younger than that in the second group(16.5±5.9 vs 48.3±13.5, P<0.001). The number of episodes of acute pancreatitis in the first group was significantly higher than that in the second group (15.0±6.8 vs 4.0±4.6, P=0.011)The number of splenic vein thrombosis in the first group was significantly higher than that in the second group (4/7 vs 9/58P=0.025). Logistic regression analysis found that younger age was an independent predictor of CP due to hypertriglyceridemia(r=0.418, P=0.000).CONCLUSIONS: Type 1 hyperlipidemia appears to be an etiological factor even for a minority of patients with CP. It manifests at a younger age, and the course of the disease might be severe.
