Rare earth metal as a dopant element:Cerium ion as an articulator in hexavalent chromium removal by magnetic iron oxides

This study highlights introducing the rare earth metal cerium(Ce(Ⅳ))into the structure of magnetite(Fe_(3)O_(4))to achieve enhanced adsorptive properties for the removal of chromium(Cr(VI))from an aqueous *** ratios of Ce(Ⅳ)were introduced into the iron oxide matrix,termed FeCe-5,FeCe-10,and *** numerical values correspond to the nominal content of the dopant element added to the synthesis *** solid materials were characterized for morphology and chemical structure,and N_(2)physical adsorption/desorption measurements were *** solid materials doped with Ce(IV)have a high surface area compared to Fe_(3)O_(4),and the solid material with the highest content of the dopant ion(Ce(IV))has a 4-fold greater surface *** increase in the dopant content in the iron oxide structure leads to a total chromium removal of 93.3%.Isotherms studies on the solid materials show that chromium adsorption follows the Langmuir *** adsorption capacity to Fe_(3)O_(4)is 12.59 mg/g and FeCe-10 is 22.49 mg/g at 35℃.By fitting the kinetic and isothermal models,it is found that for the Fe_(3)O_(4)and FeCe-10 materials Cr(VI)removal occurs in very different ways,attributed to the different surface areas and compositions of the oxide,with the formation of the goethite(α-FeOOH)*** FeCe-10reuse process was performed and the removal capacity the Cr(VI)is reduced after the first *** result is attributed to a strong and irreversible adsorption of Cr(VI)on the FeCe-10.

Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania(Leishmania) amazonensis in human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-infected patients: A report of two cases

Rationale: Co-infection of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) and Leishmania spp. has impact on clinical and therapeutic outcomes of leishmaniases. Most studies do not present the identification of Leishmania species causing American tegumentary leishmaniasis in co-infections. In the Americas, Leishmania(L.) Viannia(V.) braziliensis and L.(V.) guyanensis have been identified. Patient concerns: In this study, two cases of American tegumentary leishmaniasis in patients infected with HIV are described. Patients presented several lesions with rapid dissemination and mucosal involvement. Diagnosis: Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. amazonensis was identified by molecular test. Interventions: The patients were treated with conventional therapies for HIV infection and American tegumentary leishmaniasis. Outcomes: In co-infection, the clinical manifestations are atypical and the treatment response can be impaired. Lessons: These cases show that HIV infection impacts L. amazonensis infection and point to the relevance of identifying Leishmania species, which can lead to a better patient management.

Falls and health-related quality of life (SF-36) in elderly people—ISACAMP 2008

Falls are accidental events and harmful to the healthy elderly. Its consequence can lead to the disability and the death. Accordingly, it becomes important to assess the relation between falls and quality of life. This theme is little studied in Brazil and internationally, especially in areas with large population bases. Objective: To identify the association between occurrence of fall and health-related quality of life (HRQL) using the SF-36 according to gender, age and schooling, among the elderly population of Campinas/Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional, population-based study, using data from ISACAMP 2008. The present study analyzed only the population with 60 years old or more, totaling 1432 elderly individuals. The dependent variables were the eight SF-36 scale, version 2. The main independent variables were the falls occurred in the last 12 months and the limitation in activities daily living due to the falls. Analysis were carried out with the simple and multiple linear regression model in order to determine the associations between the dependent and main independent variables, using svy commands of STATA 11.0. Results: The prevalence of falls in the last year was 6.3%. The elderly individuals who referred to fall in the last 12 months exhibited the lowest score in seven of eight SF-36 scales, comparing with non-fallers. The association between fall and HRQL was greater in the male population. The elderly individuals who are older (75 or more) and located in the lower schooling stratum, and experienced falls also exhibited the lowest SF-36 scale scores, in physical and social functioning. Stratifying falls, considering those who cause limitations and those who do not, can be observed with the lowest scores in physical functioning, role physical, role emotion and social functioning, and only in the stratum of people who have limitations in daily living. Lightning Changes in Response to Global Warming in rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Physical concepts based on the Clausius-Clapeyron relation and on the thermodynamics and aerosol characteristics associated with updrafts, global climate models assuming different parametrizations and lightning-related output variables, and lightning-related data (thunderstorm days) are being used to infer the lightning incidence in a warmer planet, motivated by the global warming observed. In all cases, there are many gaps to be overcome making the lightning response to the global temperature increase still unpredicted. Values from almost 0% (no increase) to 100% have been estimated, being 10% the most common value. While the physical concepts address only part of the problem and the global climate models need to make many simple assumptions, lightning-relate data have strong time and space limitations. In this context, any new evidence should be considered as an important contribution to better understand how will be the lightning incidence in the future. In this article, we described new results about the occurrence of thunderstorms from 1850 to 2010 (a period of 160 years) in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the Southeast of Brazil. During this period thunderstorm days were recorded in the same location, making this time series one of the longest series of this type available worldwide. Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization after Thermomechanical Treatments in 6063 Aluminum Alloy

The aim of this work is the mechanical and microstructural characterization by optical and electron microscopy as well as microhardness of Al 6063 alloy after mechanical and thermal treatment. Al-Mg based alloys have special attention due to the lightness of the material and certain mechanical properties and recyclability. Such alloys produce good mechanical properties in moderate mechanical efforts (up to 700 MPa) and good resistance to the corrosion. Cold rolling steps (30%, 60% and 90% in area reduction) in Al 6063 alloy were employed for the recrystallization studies, followed by thermal treatment using four isothermal heating (423K, 523K, 623K and 723K) during 1800, 3600, 5400 and 7200s. The direct observation and chemical microanalysis were made in a JEOL200C and JEOL2010 transmission electron microscopes combined with mechanical characterization utilizing Vickers microhardness measurements. Normally classified as non-heat-treatable these alloys obtain higher strength either by strain-hardening or by solid solution. The nucleation of new grains is a non stability of the deformed microstructure, depending on subgrain size heterogeneities present as potential embryos in the deformed state adjacent to high local misorientation. The results indicate a significant effect of second-phase particles on recrystallization and how to control the resulting microstructure and texture by the use of particles. It may be a preferential growth in the early stage due to their local environment or a selection of certain orientations from among those produced by particles stimulated nucleation or a preferential nucleation at particles in favored sites such as grain boundaries.

Lightning Enhancement in the Amazon Region Due to Urban Activity

Urbanization has an increasing contribution to anthropogenic climate forcing. The impact arises mainly from the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and aerosol anthropogenic emissions. An important but not completely understood consequence of this forcing is its effect on local lightning activity. Changes in lightning activity may result in a feedback on the climate system. In this article, it investigates changes in the lightning activity in the city of Manaus, located in the Amazon region of Brazil. It is found that, over the city, the lightning activity is larger than in the regions around it and it has been increasing in the last four decades simultaneously with the increasing of its urban area. Our results suggest that such changes are caused by the UHI effect. The observations reported here are unique and relevant because Manaus is located in the central part of the Amazon rainforest and inside one of the three global lightning chimneys in the world.

Incorporation of Bromelain into Dermatological Bases： Accelerated Stability Studies

This work aimed the incorporation of the enzyme bromelain from pineapple peel into dermatological bases for potential therapeutic application. The enzyme was incorporated into Lanette cream and lotion, as well as Carbopol gel and Chemyunion cream and lotion, at a concentration of 0.5% （w/w）. These bases were subjected to centrifugation test and accelerated stability test during 90 days at 25 ℃（with and without sunlight）, 37 ℃ and 4 ℃, in order to evaluate bromelain stability in dermatological bases. Total protein content and enzymatic activity were measured. The bases were stable as its organoleptic characteristics （appearance, color, smell and sensitivity to touch） only when kept at 4 ℃ with activity remaining 95.5%, 84,9%. 77.7%, 73.8% and 72.3%, alter 90 days of testing in Carbopol gel, Lanette and Chemyunion cream, and Lanette and Chemyunion lotion, respectively. Based on the results, it was possible to incorporate bromelain into dermatological bases, and the activity was well preserved when these bases were kept in refrigerator at 4 ℃.

Biorefinery is a new term to designate two main subjects, bioproducts and bioenergy, which play important roles towards a more bio-based society. This paper reviews the current biorefineries model as well as its future importance focusing on pulp mill opportunities. There are currently several different levels of integration in biorefineries which add to their sustainability, both economically and environmentally. Enzymatic pretreatment for biomass deconstruction aiming to release the polysaccharides is a key technology in the future biorefineries and it is currently the subject of intensive research.

Emergent Macrophytes Alter the Sediment Composition in a Small, Shallow Subtropical Lake: Implications for Methane Emission

Aquatic macrophytes in shallow lakes emit high levels of methane. We hypothesize that the presence of emergent aquatic macrophytes in an artificial shallow lake promotes important input of autochthonous organic matter (OM) in sediment and higher levels of methane emission via bubbles. Samplings were performed at three sites in a small, shallow subtropical lake: (1) one station in the limnetic region and (2) - (3) two stations in the littoral region ((2) inside and (3) outside aquatic macrophyte stands). A higher concentration of OM was observed at the macrophyte station, and within this site, a higher methane concentration was observed in the sediment. These results could explain the methane ebullition values at macrophyte sites. At the macrophyte station, methane emission via bubbles contributed 17% to 56% of the total methane emission;however, at the other stations, its contribution via bubbles, was lower than 1%. This research confirmed the importance of emergent macrophytes at Polegar Lake as a source of OM in sediment and methane emission via bubbles. Further, we could confirm the positive effects of temperature on methane emission, mainly by bubbles.
