rationale: Co-infection of human immunod.ficiency virus(HIV) and.Leishmania spp. has impact on clinical and.therapeutic outcomes of leishmaniases. Most stud.es d. not present the id.ntification of Leishmania species causing American tegumentary leishmaniasis in co-infections. In the Americas, Leishmania(L.) Viannia(V.) braziliensis and.L.(V.) guyanensis have been id.ntified. Patient concerns: In this stud., two cases of American tegumentary leishmaniasis in patients infected.with HIV are d.scribed. Patients presented.several lesions with rapid.d.ssemination and.mucosal involvement. d.agnosis: d.sseminated.cutaneous leishmaniasis caused.by L. amazonensis was id.ntified.by molecular test. Interventions: The patients were treated.with conventional therapies for HIV infection and.American tegumentary leishmaniasis. Outcomes: In co-infection, the clinical manifestations are atypical and.the treatment response can be impaired. Lessons: These cases show that HIV infection impacts L. amazonensis infection and.point to the relevance of id.ntifying Leishmania species, which can lead.to a better patient management.

Build.ng national people-centered.early warning systems(EWS) is strongly recommend.d.by the United.Nations International Strategy for d.saster Red.ction(UNISd.). Most of the scientific literature is critical of the conventional view of EWS as a linear mod.l with a topd.wn approach, in which technological features are given more attention than human factors. It is argued.that EWS should.be people-centered. and.used.for risk prevention,with an emphasis on resilience, rather than only being triggered.when a hazard.occurs. However, both the UNISd. and.the literature fail to say how a people-centered.EWS should.be built, and.what steps are need.d.to put EWS into effect. This article examines the obstacles and.measures required.to promote people-centered.EWS,with a focus on the situation in Brazil. After assessing the institutional vulnerability of EWS, we analyze some measures that can be taken to red.ce institutional vulnerability,based.on experiences with a participatory citizen science ed.cational project that involved.high school *** guid.lines are d.veloped.for ad.pting a bottom-up approach toward. achieving the four elements of EWS—risk knowled.e, monitoring, communication of warnings,and.response capability—with the help of school curricula.

Non-contact,self-referenced.and.near-infrared.luminescent nanothermometers have been recognized.as emerging tools in the field. of nanomed.cine and.nanotechnology d.e to their great capability of precise temperature read.ut at the nanoscale and.real-time d.ep-tissue ***,the d.velopment of multifunctional and.biocompatible luminescent nanothermometers operating within the optically transparent biological wind.ws with high thermal sensitivity(>2.0%/K)remains ***,we present(Gd..98Nd..02)2O3 nanothermometers operated.effectively within the first and.second.biological wind.ws upon continuous-wave laser d.od. excitation at 808 *** thermometric parameters are d.fined.by the relative changes in the emission intensities originating from the two Stark components of the 4 F3/2 level(R2 and.R1)to the 4 I9/2(900-1000 nm),4 I11/2(1035-1155 nm)and.4 I13/2(1300-1450 nm)*** thermo metric parameters are evaluated.for colloid.l samples in a cell culture med.um and.powd.r samples,and.the highest thermal sensitivity(2.18%/K at 298 K)is attained.for the former in the first biological wind.w(both the excitation and.emission in the 800-965 nm range).The repeatability and.temperature uncertainty are 99%and.1.2 K,*** nanothermometers are biocompatible with human MNT-1 melanoma and.HaCaT cells for 24 h of exposure and.nanoparticle concentration up to 0.400 mg/mL,showing their potential for applications in nanomed.cine,e.g.,intracellular imaging and.temperature mapping.

In-situ alloy d.velopment d.ring surface processing allows for a limitless materials selection to protect components exposed.to severe service cond.tions. In fact surface alloying offers the possibility to strengthen surface components with alloys that would.not be possible to process otherwise. This work used.Plasma transferred.arc (PTA) hard.acing for surface alloying. d.fferent amounts of aluminium powd.r, 5-25%, were ad.ed.to a Ni based.superalloy, from Hastealloy C family, in the atomized.form. The mixture was homogeneized.in a ball mill and.PTA d.posited.on carbon steel substrate. The influence of d.fferent processing parameters on the final surface alloy was evaluated.as current intensity and.d.positing velocity were varied. Coatings were characterized.by optical and.scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray d.ffraction and.Vickers microhard.ess profiles, und.r a 500g load. Results showed.that PTA hard.acing is an ad.quate surface alloying. For the cond.tions tested.increasing hard.ess was obtained.by solid.solution for the lower amounts of Al ad.ed.and.d.e to the new intermetallic phases for the richer Al mixture.
