An Alternative Tool f.r Determining f.avonoid Compounds in Markhamia tomentosa and Bunchosia glandulif.ra Using Digital Image Analysis

Bunchosia glanduliera stands out because of.the high content of.f.avonoid compounds in the pulp, contributing to the antioxidant potential of.f.uit extracts. Another plant species rich in f.avonoid compounds is Markhamia tomentosa. However, to perf.rm such an assay, a high-cost instrument is needed. To develop a simple and low-cost method f.r the determination of.f.avonoid compounds in M. tomentosa and B. glandulif.ra with PhotoMetrix® program application use pixels of.digital imaging as an alternative method and linear correlation techniques f.r univariate analysis implementing systems of.RGB colors (red, green, and blue). To determine the total f.avonoids, the reaction with f.rric chloride and quercetin was used as a control. f.r the acquisition of.data or smartphones, low-cost materials were used, demonstrating the applicability of.this analytical tool while comparing its cost to other analytical instrumentation. The total f.avonoid content was also determined using a spectrophotometry technique in the visible ultraviolet spectrum (UV-Vis). The pulp of.B. glandulif.ra showed the highest content of.f.avonoid compounds. The content of.f.avonoid compounds f.und in the f.uit of.B. glandulif.ra was 259.54 mg 100 g-1. In relation to the results f.und in the analysis of.total f.avonoids of.M. tomentosa can be observed in the f.ower in natura has a higher content of.these compounds. The use of.PhotoMetrix® f.r the determination of.f.avonoid compounds in M. tomentosa and B. glandulif.ra reduced expense and analysis time. The method is reproducible and ef.icient. The proposed method can be adopted in dif.erent species.

Rationale: Co-inf.ction of.human immunodef.ciency virus(HIV) and Leishmania spp. has impact on clinical and therapeutic outcomes of.leishmaniases. Most studies do not present the identif.cation of.Leishmania species causing American tegumentary leishmaniasis in co-inf.ctions. In the Americas, Leishmania(L.) Viannia(V.) braziliensis and L.(V.) guyanensis have been identif.ed. Patient concerns: In this study, two cases of.American tegumentary leishmaniasis in patients inf.cted with HIV are described. Patients presented several lesions with rapid dissemination and mucosal involvement. Diagnosis: Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. amazonensis was identif.ed by molecular test. Interventions: The patients were treated with conventional therapies f.r HIV inf.ction and American tegumentary leishmaniasis. Outcomes: In co-inf.ction, the clinical manif.stations are atypical and the treatment response can be impaired. Lessons: These cases show that HIV inf.ction impacts L. amazonensis inf.ction and point to the relevance of.identif.ing Leishmania species, which can lead to a better patient management.

Bioref.nery is a new term to designate two main subjects, bioproducts and bioenergy, which play important roles towards a more bio-based society. This paper reviews the current bioref.neries model as well as its f.ture importance f.cusing on pulp mill opportunities. There are currently several dif.erent levels of.integration in bioref.neries which add to their sustainability, both economically and environmentally. Enzymatic pretreatment f.r biomass deconstruction aiming to release the polysaccharides is a key technology in the f.ture bioref.neries and it is currently the subject of.intensive research.
