Development of endemicity and conservation importance indices for tropical forests and the floral diversity assessment of *** in Benguet,Philippines

the scientific community faces the challenge of measuring progress toward biodiversity targets and indices have been traditionally ***,recent inventories in secondary tropical mountain forests using traditional biodiversity indices have yielded results that are indistinct with primary *** shows the need to develop complementary indices that goes beyond species count but integrates the distribution and conservation status of the *** study developed endemicity and conservation importance index for tropical forest that incorporated the distribution and conservation status of the *** indices were applied to ***,a remnant primary mossy forest in Buguias,Benguet,Philippines,that resulted to endemicity index of 81.07 and conservation importance index of *** these with secondary forest sites with comparable Shannon-Wiener,Simpson,Evenness and Margalef’s indices,our endemicity and conservation indices clearly differentiates primary forest(our study site)with higher values from secondary forests with much lower ***,we are proposing these indices for a direct but scientifically-informed identification of specific sites for conservation and protection in tropical ***,our study documented a total of 168 vascular plant species(79 endemic and 12 locally threatened species)in *** are of tropical elements for both generic and species levels with some temperate elements that could be attributed to the site's high elevation and semi-temperate *** are important baseline information for conservation plans and monitoring of tropical mossy forests.

the Application of Comparative Psychology to Parapsychology: A Recommendation

We propose that the comparative psychological principle of “levels” be used as a new research methodology to investigate psi in humans. Rather than investigate psi in animals, as is sometimes done, we propose to investigate psi in humans using animals as a receptor. Our approach is to start with simple organisms such as protozoans and progress to planarians and honey bees. the behavior of these organisms is well characterized and easily manipulated. Deviations from standard behavior patterns during an experiment on telekinesis can suggest psi effects. A major advantage of using invertebrates for psi research is that if a psi effect is found, the underlying mechanism of the effect can be analyzed using molecular and genetic tools. We provide suggestions on how telekinesis can be studied using this approach and suggest that Observation Oriented Modeling be used to analyze psi data.

triradiate caecal fold:Is it a useful landmark for caecal intubation in colonoscopy?

AIM: to determine the frequency of identification of the triradiate fold during colonoscopy and evaluate its reliability as a marker of caecal intubation. MEtHODS: One hundred consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopy in a tertiary hospital colorectal unit from May to September 2013 were studied. Video documentation of the caecum was recorded and shown to consultant colorectal surgeons on the unit. Each reviewer was asked through a series of questions to independently identify the triradiate fold. the main outcome was the frequency of visualisation of the triradiate fold in the ***: the triradiate fold was seen on average in 18% of cases, but inter-observer agreement was poor. there were only four patients(4%) in which all reviewers agreed on the presence of a triradiate fold. In patients who had undergone previous appendicectomy, the appendiceal orifice was less frequently seen compared with patients who had not undergone ***: the triradiate fold is infrequently seen during colonoscopy and is therefore an unreliable landmark of caecal intubation.

流星进入地球大气层时会发生空中解体和爆炸,威胁地球局部区域乃至全球安全针对流星进入大气演化的超高速动力学仿真研究具有重要意义.为提高预报的精确性,应关注流星体内部结构和非均匀烧蚀等对演化过程和解体后碎片运动的影响。本文提出了一种可变形不规则离散元方法,用于仿真分析流星进入大气层时轨迹和姿态变化、烧蚀、解体和爆轰等现象。利用多面体离散元模型可模拟不同结构的异质流星;通过拉伸多面体模型顶点,仿真流星的粗糙外形和烧蚀形变;利用jones-Wilkins-Lee状态方程计算烧蚀产生的集中爆轰产物的压力.以Chelyabinsk流星事件中发生轨迹偏离的碎片为例,数值仿真集中爆轰产物的膨胀驱动作用对碎片运动方向和轨迹演化的影响.仿真结果表明,碎片弹出轨迹特征和烧蚀剩余质量均在观测值范围内,验证了新方法的有效性.

Intensities of human disturbance dictate the floral diversity in tropical forest:the case of a secondary forest in Benguet, Philippines

this study inventoried the floral diversity of a secondary forest in tuba,Benguet,Philippines as affected by different intensities of human *** study is unique from other land use studies in Southeast Asia in having conventional farms as the most disturbed land use while other sites have oil palm plantations.A total of 267 species belonging to 222 genera and 78 families was *** showed that the level of human disturbance is the major factor affecting the floral diversity while the effect of elevation is *** level of human disturbance is significantly associated with species richness,species composition,dominant species and biodiversity *** human disturbance,as in the case of conventional farms,results in lower species richness,predominantly weed composition,dominant weed species and lower biodiversity *** the other hand,lesser human disturbance(as in the case of secondary forest)leads to higher species richness,greater native species composition,dominance of indigenous species,and higher diversity *** most disturbed land use experienced the greatest loss of species richness,change in floristic composition and vegetation structure,as well as a shift from native to alien-dominated plant *** results showed that the effect of land use change is not limited to species richness but also to species composition,dominant species and biodiversity ***,the study is an important baseline data for biodiversity conservation of the Marcos Highway Watershed Forest Reserve.
