Intragroup social dynam.cs vary with the presence of neighbors in a cooperatively breeding fish

Conflict is an in here nt part of social life in group-living species. Group m.m.ers m.y m.diate conflict through subm.ssive and affiliative behaviors, which can reduce aggression, stabilize dom.nance hierarchies, and foster group cohesion. The frequency and resolution of within-group conflict m.y vary with the presenee of neighboring groups. Neighbors can threaten the territory or resources of the whole group, prom.ting behaviors that foster within-group cohesion. However, neighbors m.y also foster conflict of interests am.ng group m.m.ers: opportunities for subordinate dispersal m.y alter conflict am.ng dom.nants and subordinates while opportunities for extrapair reproduction m.y increase conflict between m.tes. To understand how neighbors m.diate within-group conflict in the cooperatively breeding fish Neolam.rologus pulcher, we m.asured behavioral dynam.cs and social network structure in isolated groups, groups recently exposed to neighbors, and groups with established neighbors. Aggression and subm.ssion between the dom.nant m.le and fem.le pair were high in isolated groups, but dom.nant aggression was directly prim.rily at subordinates when groups had neighbors. This suggests that neighbors attenuate conflict between m.tes and foster conflict between dom.nants and subordinates. Further, aggression and subm.ssion between sim.larly sized group m.m.ers were m.st frequent when groups had neighbors, suggesting that neighbors induce rank-related conflict. We found relatively little change in within-group affiliative networks across treatm.nts, suggesting that the presence of neighbors does not alter behaviors associated with prom.ting group cohesion. Collectively, these results provide som. of the first em.irical insights into the extent to which intragroup behavioral networks are m.diated by intergroup interactions and the broader social context.

The brain's extracellular m.trix(ECm.,which is com.rised of protein and glycosam.noglycan(GAG)scaffolds,constitutes 20%-40% of the hum.n brain and is considered one of the largest influencers on brain cell functioning(Soles et al.,2023).Synthesized by neural and glial cells,the brain's ECm.regulates a m.riad of hom.ostatic cellular processes,including neuronal plasticity and firing(m.yata et al.,2012),cation buffering(m.raws ki et al.,2015),and glia-neuron interactions(Anderson et al.,2016).Considering the diversity of functions,dynam.c rem.deling of the brain's ECm.indicates that this understudied m.dium.is an active participant in both norm.l physiology and neurological diseases.

Quantitative determ.nation of vitexin in Passiflora foetida Linn. leaves using HPTLC

Objective: To establish a sim.le, rapid, precise and accurate high perform.nce thin layer chrom.tography(HPTLC) m.thod with densitom.tric detection for the determ.nation of vitexin in Passiflora foetida Linn.(P. foetida).m.thods: Ethanolic extract of the plant leaf powder was used for the experim.ntal *** was perform.d on silica gel 60 F254 HPTLC plates with ethyl acetate:m.thanol: distilled water: form.c acid in the proportion of 50:2:3:6(v/v), as the m.bile phase. The determ.nation was carried out using the densitom.tric absorbance m.de at340 ***: Vitexin response was linear over the range of 2.5–17.5 m./m.L with a correlation coefficient of 0.996. Intraday and interday precision studies showed the relative SD wasm.thod was determ.ned and the average recovery was 100.3%.The lim.t of quantitation and lim.t of detection were 0.879 and 0.290 m./m.L, *** contents of vitexin in P. foetida leaf extracts were within the range of 0.030%–0.310%.Conclusions: The m.thod was evaluated for sensitivity, accuracy, precision and reproducibility. Each analysis by HPTLC is less expensive than current m.thods. This m.thod is suitable for routine quality control of raw m.terial of the leaves of P. foetida extract and its products.

Objective: To evaluate the m.nogalactosyl diglyceride(m.DG) and digalactosyl diglyceride(DGDG) from.Clinacanthus nutans(C. nutans) for their in vitro antiviral activities against herpes sim.lex virus type 1(HSV-1) and type 2(HSV-2) by plaque reduction ***: m.DG and DGDG were extracted with chloroform.from.C. nutans *** and DGDG were separated from.chloroform.crude extract using colum. chrom.tography, characterized by thin layer chrom.tography and quantified by high perform.nce liquid chrom.tography. The anti HSV-1 and 2 activity against pre-treatm.nt and posttreatm.nt of the com.ounds was evaluated using plaque reduction assay. The cytotoxicity of the extract and the com.ounds on Vero cells were perform.d by m.T ***: m.DG and DGDG obtained by colum. chrom.tography showed identical profiles as standard m.DG and standard DGDG using thin layer chrom.tography and high perform.nce liquid chrom.tography. m.DG and DGDG from.C. nutans showed 100%inhibition of HSV-1 replication at the post step of infection at noncytotoxic concentration with IC50 values of 36.00 and 40.00 m./m.L, and HSV-2 at 41.00 and 43.20 m./m.,respectively. m.reover, m.DG and DGDG from.C. nutans were dem.nstrated to have antiherpes sim.lex activity at the sam. level as standard synthetic com.ounds. In contrast, pretreatm.nt of Vero cells with m.DG and DGDG before HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection did not show inhibitory effect against these viruses. m.DG and DGDG exhibited antiviral activity against HSV-1 with selectivity index of 26.00 and 23.00 and HSV-2 of 23.30 and ***: m.DG and DGDG from.C. nutans, a traditional Thai herbal m.dicine illustrated inhibitory activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2, probably by inhibiting the late stage of m.ltiplication, suggesting their prom.sing use as anti-HSV agents.

Nonlinear forced vibration in a subcritical regim. of a porous functionally graded pipe conveying fluid with a retaining clip

This study exam.nes the nonlinear behaviors of a clam.ed-clam.ed porous pipe m.de of a functionally graded m.terial(FGm. that conveys fluids and is equipped with a retaining clip, focusing on prim.ry resonance and subcritical dynam.cs. The nonlinear governing equations for the FGm.pipe are derived by the extended hamilton's principle, and subsequently discretized through the application of the Galerkin *** direct m.thod of m.lti-scales is then used to solve the derived equations. A thorough analysis of various param.ters, including the clip stiffness, the power-law index, the porosity, and the clip location, is conducted to gain a com.rehensive understanding of the system.s nonlinear dynam.cs. Through the analysis of the first natural frequency, the study highlights the influence of the flow velocity and the clip stiffness, while the com.arisons with m.tallic pipes em.hasize the role of FGm.com.osition. The exam.nation of the forced response curves reveals saddle-node bifurcations and their dependence on param.ters such as the detuning param.ter and the power-law index, offering valuable insights into the system.s nonlinear resonant behavior. Furtherm.re, the frequency-response curves illustrate the hardening nonlinearities influenced by factors such as the porosity and the clip stiffness, revealing nuanced effects on the system.response and resonance characteristics. This com.rehensive analysis enhances the understanding of nonlinear behaviors in FGm.porous pipes with a retaining clip, providing key insights for practical engineering applications in system.design and optim.zation.

On-chip detection of a single nucleotide polym.rphism.without polym.rase am.lification

A nanoparticle-assem.led photonic crystal （PC） array was used to detect single nucleotide polym.rphism.（SNP）. The assay platform.with PC nanostructure enhanced the fluorescent signal from.nanoparticle-hybridized DNA com.lexes due to phase m.tching of excitation and em.ssion. Nanoparticles coupled with probe DNA were trapped into nanowells in an array by using an electrophoretic particle entrapm.nt system. The PC/DNA assay platform.was able to identify a 1 base pair （bp） difference in synthesized nucleotide sequences that m.m.cked the m.tation seen in a feline m.del of hum.n autosom.l dom.nant polycystic kidney disease （PKD） with a sensitivity of 0.9 fg/m. （50 am.-sensitivity, which corresponds to 30 oligos/array. The reliability of the PC/DNA assay platform.to detect SNP in a real sam.le was dem.nstrated by using genom.c DNA （gDNA） extracted from.the urine and blood of two PKD-wild type and three PKD positive cats. The standard curves for PKD positive （PKD＋） and negative （PKD-） DNA were created using two feline-urine sam.les. An additional three urine sam.les were analyzed in a sim.lar fashion and showed satisfactory agreem.nt with the standard curve, confirm.ng the presence of the m.tation in affected urine. The lim.t of detection （LOD） was 0.005 ng/m. which corresponds to 6 fg per array for gDNA in urine and blood. The PC system.dem.nstrated the ability to detect a num.er of genom. equivalents for the PKD SNP that was very sim.lar to the results reported with real tim. polym.rase chain reaction （PCR）. The favorable com.arison with quantitative PCR suggests that the PC technology m.y find application well beyond the detection of the PKD SNP, into areas where a sim.le, cheap and portable nucleic acid analvsis is desirable.

Num.rous reports have identified a dysbiosis in the intestinal m.crobiota in patients suffering from.inflam.atory bowel diseases(IBD),yet the m.chanism.s)in which this com.lex m.crobial com.unity initiates or perpetuates inflam.ation rem.ins *** purpose of this review is to present evidence for one such m.chanism.that im.licates enteric m.crobial derived proteases in the pathogenesis of *** highlight and discuss studies dem.nstrating that proteases and protease receptors are abundant in the digestive ***,we investigate studies dem.nstrating an association between increased lum.nal protease activity and activation of protease receptors,ultim.tely resulting in increased intestinal perm.ability and exacerbation of colitis in anim.l m.dels as well as in hum.n *** are essential for the norm.l functioning of bacteria and in som. cases can serve as virulence factors for pathogenic *** not classified as traditional virulence factors,proteases originating from.com.ensal enteric bacteria also have a potential association with intestinal inflam.ation via increased enteric *** of increased protease activity in stools from.IBD patients support a possible m.chanism.for a dysbiotic enteric m.crobiota in IBD.A better understanding of these pathways and characterization of the enteric bacteria involved,their proteases,and protease receptors m.y pave the way for new therapeutic approaches for these diseases.
