Evaluation on Information Model about Sensors Featured by Relationships to Measured Structural Objects

In accordance with the requirements of expanding Machine-To-Machine communication (M2M), the network overlay is in progress in several domains such as Smart Grid. Consequently, it is predictable that opportunities and cases of integrating yielded data from devices such as sensors will increase more. Accordingly, the importance of Ontology and Information Models (IM) which normalize the semantics including sensor expressions, have increased, and the standards of these definitions have been more important as well. So far, there have been multiple initiatives for standardizing the Ontology and IM in regards to the sensors expression such as Sensor Standards Harmonization by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), W3C Semantic Sensor Network (SSN) and the recent W3C IoT-Lite Ontology. However, there is still room to improve the current level of the Ontology and IM on the viewpoint of the implementing structure. This paper presents a set of IMs on abstract sensors and contexts in regards to the phenomenon around these sensors from the point of view of a structure implementing these specified sensors. As several previous studies have pointed out, multiple aspects on the sensors should be modeled. Accordingly, multiple sets of Ontology and IM on these sensors should be defined. Our study has intended to clarify the relationship between configurations and physical measured quantities of the structures implementing a set of sensors. Up to present, they have not been generalized and have remained unformulated. Consequently, due to the result of this analysis, it is expected to implement a more generalized translator module easily, which aggregates the measured data from the sensors on the middleware level managing these Ontology and IM, instead of the layer of user application programs.

Measuring surface geometry of adherent cells using oblique transillumination

We present a new technique for estimating cell surface geometry. A dish supporting adherent cells is observed using oblique transillumination and rotated in the horizontal plane using a stepping motor. The stage rotation-dependent movements of the start and end points of a shadow formed behind the illuminated cells uniquely determine the relative height differences between points along the cell surface. Thus, using custom-made apparatuses and living endothelial cells, we demonstrate that the combination of a rotating stage and oblique lighting allows for the evaluation of three-dimensional surface geometry of adherent cells. As compared to confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy, which are commonly used for measuring cell surface geometry, this approach can be performed rapidly and is especially suitable for the observation of unstained cells over a large surface covering multiple cells at a time.

Association between Systolic Blood Pressure Difference ≥10 mm Hg and Ankle-Brachial Index

Background: In new outpatients, blood pressure should be measured in both arms. A previous study reported that an inter-arm systolic blood pressure difference (ΔSBP) of ≥10 mm Hg is associated with an increased risk of mortality. Aim: The aim was to identify the associations with absolute values of ΔSBP (|ΔSBP|) ≥10 mm Hg. Subjects and Methods: This study included 2481 patients. Patients with a body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 were defined as obese. The group of A was defined as following: ankle-brachial index (ABI) was <0.9 or ≥1.3. ΔSBP was expressed as right arm BP minus left arm BP. |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg were analyzed using multivariate logistic analysis. Results: |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg was found in 6.0% of patients and |ΔSBP| < 5 mm Hg in 80.4%. In multivariate analysis, the odds ratios (ORs) of the associations with |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg were significantly associated with abnormal ABI and obesity regardless of sex and age. Moreover, the OR of the combined effects of abnormal ABI and obesity was higher than that of abnormal ABI and obesity alone. Conclusion: |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg was associated with abnormal ABI and obesity. In a primary care setting, blood pressure should be actively measured in both arms. This study suggests that the associations with |ΔSBP| ≥10 mm Hg may be a useful part of screening for abnormal ABI.

The Success of Healthcare Providers Who Fought the Epidemic of the Meiji Era in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan

Introduction: Knowing an epidemic existed in Mizunami city and knowing the healthcare provided to overcome the disease may give hints on how the epidemic was handled. Aim: To examine the literature on the epidemic that occurred in the Meiji era and the contributions of healthcare providers who were active in the history of Mizunami city. Method: This is a historical study, mainly using literature. In collaboration with the Mizunami City Board of Education, we searched for materials stored by Mizunami city. In addition, with the cooperation of the local residents of the healthcare providers who were active in Mizunami city, we collected materials in reference to our purpose. Result: The outbreak of the epidemic near Mizunami city was seen as a fight against smallpox. In addition, cholera, dysentery, Spanish flu, and typhoid fever also occurred. Vaccinations were carried out in the Tono region. Healthcare providers who were active in the Meiji era include six doctors and two midwives. Discussion: In the future, it will be necessary to provide more in-depth evidence through surveys, such as interviews with the cooperation of relatives of the active healthcare providers. Conclusion: In the Meiji era, in the vicinity of Mizunami city, doctors and midwives actively fought against epidemics, such as smallpox and other infectious diseases.

The Key Factor of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) in the History of the Contribution of Mining Industry to the Prosperity of the United States and South Africa: A Review

Mining industry has significantly contributed to the prosperity of the nation with economic growth, whereas mining operation has caused Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) with the abandonment of mines. As some researchers suggest, the history of AMD is, generally, affected by the change in not only mining industry but also in social and economic conditions. Thus, historical analysis is an effective way to find the key factors of AMD. In this study, in order to find the key factors of AMD, we examine the history of the United States (U.S.) and South Africa, where their economy had been developed owing to the large-scale mining, based on the findings in the previous studies. The results indicated that the abandoned mines due to the economic depression triggered AMD in the U.S. and South Africa. While the U.S. had progressively adopted anti-AMD methods in terms of prevention, prediction, and remediation (PPR) as a comprehensive approach, especially since the 1970s onwards because of the rise of environmental consciousness as well as strict regulations, South Africa is at the early stage of implementing the regulations following PPR. The public attention should be directed to environmental conservation in addition to the implementation of the regulations in South Africa. The improvement in socio-economic conditions is, additionally, necessary for the rise of environmental consciousness in South Africa in the light of the three pillars of sustainable development: social, economic, and environmental elements.

Macrophage colony-stimulating factor expressed in non-cancer tissues provides predictive powers for recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM To investigate the role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor(M-CSF) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) after surgery. METHODS Expression of M-CSF, distribution of M2 macrophages(Mφs), and angiogenesis were assessed in the liver, including tumors and peritumoral liver tissues. The prognostic power of these factors was assessed. Mouse isolated hepatic Mφs or monocytes were cultured with media containing M-CSF. The concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in media was assessed. Furthermore, the role of the M-CSF-matured hepatic Mφs on proliferation of the vascular endothelial cell(VEC) was investigated. RESULTS A strong correlation between the expressions of M-CSF and CD163 was observed in the peritumoral area. Also, groups with high density of M-CSF, CD163 or CD31 showed a significantly shorter time to recurrence(TTR) than low density groups. Multivariate analysis revealedthe expression of M-CSF or hepatic M2Mφs in the peritumoral area as the most crucial factor responsible for shorter TTR. Moreover, the expression of M-CSF and hepatic M2Mφs in the peritumoral area had better predictable power of overall survival. Values of VEGF in culture media were significantly greater in the hepatic Mφs compared with the monocytes. Proliferation of the VEC was greatest in the cells co-cultured with hepatic Mφs when M-CSF was present in *** M-CSF increases hepatocarcinogenesis, most likely by enhancing an angiogenic factor derived from hepatic Mφ and could be a useful target for therapy against HCC.

Harmonic Maps and Bi-Harmonic Maps on CR-Manifolds and Foliated Riemannian Manifolds

This is a survey on our recent works on bi-harmonic maps on CR-manifolds and foliated Riemannian manifolds, and also a research paper on bi-harmonic maps principal G-bundles. We will show, (1) for a complete strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold , every pseudo bi-harmonic isometric immersion into a Riemannian manifold of non-positive curvature, with finite energy and finite bienergy, must be pseudo harmonic;(2) for a smooth foliated map of a complete, possibly non-compact, foliated Riemannian manifold into another foliated Riemannian manifold, of which transversal sectional curvature is non-positive, we will show that if it is transversally bi-harmonic map with the finite energy and finite bienergy, then it is transversally harmonic;(3) we will claim that the similar result holds for principal G-bundle over a Riemannian manifold of negative Ricci curvature.

BACKGROUND Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome(HGPS)is an extremely rare disease characterized by the rapid appearance of aging with an onset in *** cardiovascular complications can be life-threatening events for affected patients and the cause of early *** we report a HGPS patient with osteosarcoma hat was successfully managed and is alive 13 years after the *** is the first report describing the detailed surgical procedure and long-term follow-up of osteosarcoma in a patient with *** SUMMARY The patient was diagnosed with HGPS at 5 years of age with typical features and was referred to our department with a suspected bone tumor of the left proximal tibia at the age of *** biopsy of the tibial bone tumor revealed a conventional fibroblastic *** have developed and performed a freezing technique using liquid nitrogen for tumor *** technique overcame the small size of the tibia for megaprosthesis and avoided amputation and limb salvage was achieved 13 years *** the patient had a number of surgical site complications,such as wound dehiscence,and superficial and deep infections due to vulnerable skin in HGPS,no recurrence or metastases were detected for 13 years,and she walks assisted by *** general health was good at the latest follow-up at 31 years of *** A HGPS patient with osteosarcoma was successfully managed and she was alive 13 years after the diagnosis.
