Molecular Phylogeny and Phenotypic Characterization of Yeasts with a Broad Range of pH Tolerance Isolated from Natural Aquatic Environments

In this study, yeasts with broad range of pH tolerance were isolated and characterized from natural aquatic environments in Japan. Only a few basic and application studies of alkali-tolerant yeasts have been reported, despite the unmet industrial needs. First, we surveyed alkali-tolerant yeasts from natural aquatic environments at pH 7.6 - 9.4. We isolated 35 yeast strains that grew in pH 9.0 medium, from seven genera and nine species: 25 strains (N1, N2, through N6, N9, K1, K3 through K19) were Rhodotorula mucilaginosa;one (N7) was Rhodosporidium fluvial;one (N8) was Scheffersomyces spartinae;two (N10 and N13) were Wicherhamonyces anomalus;one (N11) was Cyberlindnera saturnus;one (S1) was Candida sp.;two (S2 and S4) were Candida intermedia;one (S3) was Candida quercuum;and one (K2) was Cryptococcus liquefacience. We examined the effects of pH on the growth of representative yeast strains. Strains K12 and S4 showed high growth at pH 3 - 10. Strains N7, N8, N10, N11, and S3 showed high growth at pH 3 - 9. Strains K2 and S1 showed high growth at pH 4 - 8. All nine of these strains had neutralizing activities from acidic media at pH 3 - 5 to pH 6 - 8. We previously isolated acid-tolerant yeasts (Cryptococcus sp. T1 [1] and Candida intermedia CeA16 [2]) from extremely acidified environments;they showed high growth at pH 3 - 9 and neutralizing activities of acidic media by releasing ammonium ions. Thus, alkali-tolerant yeasts and acid-tolerant yeasts were found to be similar species and have both high growth at a broad range of pH and neutralizing activities of acid media. Previously, we also isolated acid-tolerant, acid-neutralizing yeasts from neutral natural environments (26 strains, 12 species) [3]. The procerebrum (PC) of the land slug Limax is the olfactory center involved in olfactory discrimination and learning. In the PC, an oscillation of local field potential (LFP) with 0.5 - 1 Hz is observed by electrophysiological extracellular recording. Additionally, spatiotemporal neural activities in the PC have been examined using optical recordings. However, extracellular recording is preferable to measure neural activities for a long time with a high speed, while it is not abundant in spatial information. In this study, we therefore attempted to elicit spatial information from extracellular recording. For this purpose, we evaluated spatial information included in the LFP compared with the spatiotemporal neural activities measured by the fluorescent voltage imaging. As a result, aversive odors induced the coherent spatiotemporal neural activities in the PC, and the increase in coherency was observed as a change in the LFP waveform. It was also evaluated as a decrease in entropy by analyzing the LFP oscillation patterns and wavelet analysis. Thus, although the LFP provides only one series of signals, the coherency of the spatiotemporal neural activities in the PC can be evaluated by applying extracellular recording with wavelet analysis.

The change of HERS cell number and gene expression profile by occlusion during root development in rat molars

Occlusion is commenced by contact of a tooth with an opposing tooth and is the mechanical force working against the periodontal ligament (PDL). Our recent study indicated that occlusion regulated tooth root elongation occurs during root development in rat molars. Using a non-occlusal model established to directly examine the effects of the absence of occlusion in developing first molars of upper jaw, histological analysis was performed to count the number of HERS cells, with Microarray used to analyse gene expression profiles. HERS cell numbers in normal molars decreased significantly more than those in experimental molars. In microarray data, a total of 59 genes showed significant differences (fold change > 2.0). Expressions of 55 genes in the experimental molars, which included PLAP-1/asporin and periostin, were significantly decreased than those in normal molars. These data indicate that occlusion during root development leads to a decrease in the number of HERS cells, and that the aforementioned genes may play an essential role in normal root formation.

A dichlorosilane gas and a trichlorosilane gas in ambient hydrogen were evaluated to show their different gas flow motions in a slim vertical cold wall chemical vapor deposition reactor for the Minimal Fab system. This evaluation was performed for improving and controlling the film qualities and the productivities, using two quartz crystal microbalances (QCM) installed at the inlet and exhaust of the chamber by taking into account that the QCM frequency corresponds to the real time changes in the gas properties. Typically, the time period approaching from the inlet to the exhaust was shorter for the trichlorosilane gas than that for the dichlorosilane gas. The trichlorosilane gas was shown to move like plug flow, while the dichlorosilane gas seemed to be well mixed in the entire chamber.

The treatment of atrophoderma vermiculatum is challenging. A 7-year-old girl had a unilateral atrophic skin lesion on her right cheek, which was diagnosed as unilateral atrophoderma vermiculata. She was treated by carbon dioxide and 595 nm pulsed dye laser and carbon dioxide laser. This resulted in prevention of the lesional progression with favorable cosmetic appearance of the skin.

A carcinoma displaying undifferentiated features with dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltration is defined as a lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma(LEC),and some of LEC is associated with Epstein-Barr virus(EBV).All of the 13 previously reported cases of LEC of the biliary system were intrahepatic in ***,we describe the first case of LEC of the inferior common bile duct.A 68-year-old Japanese man,who had been previously treated for hepatocellular carcinoma using microwave coagulation therapy,was found to have tumors of the common bile duct and pancreas *** study of the resected tumor showed solid or cohesive nests of large undifferentiated cells with irregular large vesicular nuclei and *** the tumor cell nests,dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltration was *** glandular differentiation(approximately 5%) was also *** histopathological features corresponded morphologically to ***,the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin(CK) 7,CK 19 and CA19-9,but negative for CK 20 and Hep Par *** situ hybridization for Epstein Barr virus early small RNAs disclosed no nuclear signal in tumor ***,a diagnosis of non-EBV-associated LEC of the inferior common bile duct was *** the prognosis of the biliary LEC is thought to be better than that of conventional cholangiocarcinoma,the differences in prognosis between EBV-positive and-negative cases have not yet been ***,additional case studies will be needed to clarify the clinicopathological features of LEC of the biliary tract.

Boron-Silicon Thin Film Formation Using a Slim Vertical Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor

A boron-silicon film was formed from boron trichloride gas and dichlorosilane gas at about 900℃in ambient hydrogen at atmospheric pressure utilizing a slim vertical cold wall chemical vapor deposition reactor designed for the Minimal Fab system. The gas flow rates were 80, 20 and 0.1 - 20 sccm for the hydrogen, dichlorosilane and boron trichloride gases, respectively. The gas transport condition in the reactor was shown to quickly become stable when evaluated by quartz crystal microbalances at the inlet and outlet. The boron-silicon thin film was formed by achieving the various boron concentrations of 0.16% - 80%, the depth profile of which was flat. By observing the cross-sectional TEM image, the obtained film was dense. The boron trichloride gas is expected to be useful for the quick fabrication of various materials containing boron at significantly low and high concentrations.
