We use a transient-grating （TG） process in a Kerr bulk medium to clean a femtosecond laser pulse. Using the technique, the temporal contrast of the generated TG signal is improved by more than two orders of magnitude in comparison with the incident pulse in a 0.5-mm-thick fused silica plate. The laser spectrum is smoothed and broadened, and the pulse duration is shortened simultaneously. We expect to extend this technique to a clean pulse with broadband spectral bandwidth at a wide spectral range because it is a phase-matched process.

Ultrashort pulsed laser-induced periodic surface structures(LIPSS)can be generated on difFerent kinds of materials,which are widely utilized for modifying surface properties such as wettability,adhesion,and tribological,as well as optical *** studies have focused mainly on one-dimensional LIPSS(i.e.,line structure)*** this study,a picosecond pulsed laser was used to irradiate stainless-steel surfaces for generating two-dimensional LIPSS,namely nanodot structures,by cross-scanning the laser beam for a different number of *** obtained nanodot structures were found to be super hydrophilic just after laser irradiation,but turned to be hydrophobic after exposure in air for a few *** cross・scanning the laser beam for the same number of times,local LIPSS rewriting was *** study showed the possibility of improving the homogeneity of the surface properties of steel materials through laser-induced nanodot structuring.

Evolution of Dentary Diastema in Iguanodontian Dinosaurs

The dentary diastema of iguanodontians has been considered to be related to its unique jaw mechanism for herbivorous adaptation. The dentary and diastema lengths of iguanodontians were measured and compared to elucidate the evolution of iguanodontian diastema. A gap in ratios between most non-hadrosaurid iguanodontians and hadrosaurids was observed, suggesting that all non- hadrosaurid iguanodontians, expect for Ouranosaurus nigeriensis and Protohadros byrdi, lack a diastema or have a short diastema, although some other taxa have been considered to have a long diastema in previous studies. In non-hadrosaurid iguanodontians, some large-sized forms, such as Iguanodon bernissartensis, Shuangmiaosaurus gilmorei, and possibly Eolambia caroljonesa, had a short diastema through ontogeny, whereas Ouranosaurus nigeriensis and Protohadros byrdi developed a long diastema convergently. The development of a long diastema of hadrosaurine hadrosaurids may be different from that of lambeosaurine hadrosaurids. Some hadrosaurines （Edmontosaurus annectens, Edmontosaurus regalis, and Saurolophus angustirostris） may have developed a long diastema in the subadult stage and showed little elongation of dentary diastema through ontogeny. Lambeosaurines （Corythosaurus casuarius and Lambeosaurus lambei） tend to have a short diastema in the embryonic and subadult stages, and an elongated diastema from the subadult to adult stages.

Genome-wide Association Study Reveals that the Aquaporin NIP1;1 Contributes to Variation in Hydrogen Peroxide Sensitivity in Arabidopsis thaiiana

Hydrogen peroxide （H202） is a reactive oxygen species that affects cell signaling in various plant defense responses and induces programmed cell death. To identify the new components associated with H202 signaling and tolerance, we conducted a genome-wide association study （GWAS） on the root growth of 133 Arabidopsis thaliana accessions grown in the presence of toxic H2O2 levels. The most significant SNPs were associated with a cluster of chromosome 4 genes encoding an aquaporin NODULIN 26-LIKE INTRINSIC PROTEIN 1; 1 （NIP1;1）, an NB-ARC domain-containing disease resistance protein （AT4G19050）, and a putative membrane lipoprotein （AT4G19070）. The expression level of NIP1;1 was relatively high in A. thaliana accessions sensitive to H2O2. Additionally, overexpression of NIP1;1 in a tolerant accession （e.g., Col-0） increased the sensitivity of transgenic plants to H2O2. An in planta β-glucuronidase reporter assay revealed that variations in the NIP1;1 promoter were responsible for the differences of its expression level in H2O2-tolerant and -sensitive accessions. Cell death was extensive and H2O2 levels were high in the roots of H2O2-sensitive and NIP1;1-overexpressing accessions. Together, our results indicate that the aquaporin NIP1;1 is a key determinant of the sensitivity ofA. thaliana to H2O2, and contributes to the phenotypic variations detected by our GWAS.

The effect of basic fibroblast growth factor on regeneration in a surgical wound model of rat submandibular glands

This study developed an animal model of surgically wounded submandibular glands （SMGs） and investigated the effects of collagen gel with basic fibroblast growth factor （bFGF） on tissue regeneration of surgically wounded SMGs in vivo. The animal model was produced by creating a surgical wound using a 3-mm diameter biopsy punch in SMGs. The wound was filled with collagen gel with bFGF （bFGF group） or without bFGF （control group）. In the animal model of surgically wounded SMGs, salivary glands without scar tissue around the wound area were observed with smaller areas of collagen gel. Small round and spindle-shape cells invaded the collagen gel in both groups after operation day （AOD） 5, and this invasion dramatically increased at AOD 7. Host tissue completely replaced the collagen gel at AOD 21. The invading immune cells in the group treated with collagen gel with bFGF were positive for vimentin, g-smooth muscle actin （αSMA）, CD49f, c-kit and AQP5 at AOD 7. Similarly, the mRNA expression of vimentin, αSMA, CD49f, keratin 19 and AQP5 was also increased. This study suggests that the use of collagen gels with bFGF improves salivary gland regeneration.

A functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) of a finite length with a ring-like hydrogenation around its surface is designed toward fabrication of a molecular field-effect transistor (FET) device. The molecular wire thus designed is equipped with a quantum dot inside, which is confirmed by theoretical analysis for electronic transport. In particular, the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics under influence of the gate voltage are discussed in detail.

One of the design methods for closing the end of a pressure cylinder is to screw down a screw plug on the threaded end of the cylinder. In this case, there is the problem of stress concentration in the threaded end of the pressure cylinder. To solve the problem, it is necessary to know accurately the load distribution on the threaded end of the cylinder. To find the load distribution on the threaded end of the pressure cylinder engaged with the screw plug, the following experiments are carried out. Applying the tensile load between the screw plug and the pressure cylinder and regarding the situation above as equivalent to the situation in which the internal pressure is applied, the load distribution is measured with the strain gauge. The influence of thread pitch on the load distribution on the threaded end of the cylinder is presented and an optimum pitch for design is discussed.

Energetics of dioxygen binding into graphene patches with various sizes and shapes

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the electronic properties of an H-atom terminated graphene patch (hydrographene) smaller than a rhombic C96H26 structure with zigzag edges. Depending on shapes and sizes of hydrographenes, some hydrographenes have the triplet ground state where unpaired electrons are localized on their zigzag edges. The stability of the triplet spin state is diminished, decreasing the hydrographene sizes. The existence of the localized spin densities allows triplet dioxgen to bind into a hydrographene. According to the DFT calculations, the energetics of the dioxygen bindings is negatively influenced by downsizing hydrographenes, as well as depends on their shapes. The size-and shape-dependences of the dioxygen bindings reflect from the stability of the triplet state of a hydrographene, because its localized unpaired electrons can be utilized to be attached to an unpaired electron of triplet dioxygen.
