Heat Transfer and Performance Characteristics of Axial Cooling Fans with Downstream Guide Vanes

This study examines experimentally the effect of stators on the performance and heat transfer characteristics of small axial cooling fans. A single fan impeller, followed by nine stator blades in the case of a complete stage, was used for all the experimental configurations. Performance measurements were carried out in a constant speed stage performance test rig while the transient liquid crystal technique was used for the heat transfer measurements. Full surface heat transfer coefficient distributions were obtained by recording the temperature history of liquid crystals on a target plate. The experimental data indicated that the results are highly affected by the flow conditions at the fan outlet. Stators can be beneficial in terms of pressure drop and efficiency, and thus more economical operation, as well as, in the local heat transfer distribution at the wake of the stator blades if the fan is installed very close to the cooling object. However, as the separation distance increases, enhanced heat transfer rate in the order of 25% is observed in the case of the fan impeller.

Slope stability of reclaimed coal mines through a new water filling index

A common reclamation practice for closed coal surface mines is filling them with water to form pit *** creation and sustainability of these lakes are significantly affected by the stability of the corresponding *** present study provides a general framework for analyzing the water filling’s effect on slope stability based on a new water filling index,which can indirectly consider the factors affecting the process and efficiently quantify the filling speed’s *** assumptions of the proposed approach are thoroughly discussed,and the range of the water filling index is ***,the safety factor is calculated using the finite element method with the shear strength reduction technique during the filling process for various conditions(soil properties,slope geometry,hydraulic conditions,and water filling speed).Results are presented as normalized stability charts for practical *** the water filling,the stability gradually decreases until the reservoir reaches a critical level of 10%e40%of the total height;it then increases to even more stable conditions than the initial ***,the present analysis allows for the preliminary stability evaluation of a coal mine during the formation of a pit lake and the appropriate quantification of the water filling’s effect.

Evaluation of Corvis ST tonometer with the updated software in glaucoma practice

AIM: To evaluate the agreement of biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure(b-IOP) and central corneal thickness(CCT) measurements obtained with the updated Corvis ST tonometer versus Goldmann applanation tonometry(GAT) and optical-based corneal pachymetry(OB-CCT) in controls, patients with ocular hypertension(OHT) and primary open angle glaucoma(POAG).Additionally, we examined the differences in corneal deformation parameters provided by the updated Corvis ST among the three ***: For each participant, GAT IOP, OB-CCT and measurements with a Corvis ST with updated software were ***-Altman analysis was used to assess the agreement between the two measurement ***: A consecutive series of 80 eyes from 80 participants(30 with POAG, 25 with OHT and 25 normal controls) were included in this prospective *** mean GAT IOP of all eyes was 17.2±3.6 mm Hg, and the mean b-IOP was 15.9±3.7 mm Hg(Spearman’s rho=0.767, P<0.001).The 95% limits of agreement(Lo As) ranged from-3.1 mm Hg to 5.5 mm Hg for GAT IOP and b-IOP.b-IOP was not correlated with OB-CCT(Spearman’s rho=-0.13 P=0.917).Meanwhile there was a weak positive corelation between OB-CCT and GAT IOP–b-IOP difference(Spearman’s rho=0.378, P=0.001).The mean OB-CCT was 549.5±36.4 μm, and the Corvis-CCT was 556.1±41.5 μm(Spearman’s rho=0.900, P<0.001).No statistically significant difference in the new indices provided by the updated Corvis ST was detected among the three *** with control eyes, POAG eyes had a significantly reduced applanation time 2 after adjusting for OB-CCT and GAT IOP(P=0.048).CONCLUSION: Corvis b-IOP and CCT correlate well with GAT IOP and OB-CCT.b-IOP is not affected by CCT, which might be an advantage, especially in thick or thin *** ST yields shorter applanation time 2 measurements in patients with POAG, which might reflect altered corneal viscoelasticity.

One-year outcomes of resveratrol supplement with aflibercept versus aflibercept monotherapy in wet agerelated macular degeneration

AIM:To determine the one-year outcomes of resveratrol oral supplement in patients suffering from wet age-related macular degeneration(AMD).METHODS:Fifty naïve and previously untreated patients suffering from wet AMD,were randomly assigned in two subgroups of 25 patients *** the participants were treated with 3 monthly intravitreal injections of 2.0 mg aflibercept(IAIs)followed by injections“according to need”,while in one group the patients also received daily two tablets of resveratrol oral *** to treatment initiation,a complete ophthalmological examination,including best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and contrast sensitivity evaluation,optical coherence tomography(OCT)scans,fundus autofluorescence(FAF),fluorescein angiography,indocyanine green angiography,and OCT angiography(OCTA),was performed to every participant,while all of them completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS)questionnaire,in order to assess their quality of life(QoL)*** patients were assessed monthly for 1y with FAF,and OCT or OCTA;the main endpoints were the number IAIs,the changes in BCVA,in contrast sensitivity,and in patients’QoL ***:No significant differences were present between the groups regarding the baseline demographic and clinical *** the 12-month period,a similar number of IAIs was applied in both groups(4.52±1.00 vs 4.28±0.90,P=0.38),while the rest of the clinical data also did not differ significantly after the completion of the study ***,for HADS Depression(11.88±2.51 vs 8.28±1.54,P<0.001)and HADS Anxiety(11.92±2.52 vs 7.76±1.51,P<0.001)questionnaires values,the score was significantly better in patients who received resveratrol ***,a statistically significant difference was detected in the mean change from baseline values of contrast sensitivity(0.17±0.19 vs 0.35±0.24,P=0.005),HADS Depression(0.08±1.38 vs-3.88±1.48,P<0.001),and HADS Anxiety(0.36±1.98 vs-5.12±2.70,P<0.001)scores,in favour of the pati

Circulating autoantibodies to endogenous erythropoietin are associated with chronic hepatitis C virus infection-related anemia

BACKGROUND： Chronic hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection is associated with autoimmune phenomena and is often complicated by anemia. Circulating autoantibodies to endogenous erythropoietin （anti-EPO） have been detected in patients with chronic viral infections and were correlated to anemia. The present study aimed to determine anti-EPO prevalence in pa- tients with chronic HCV infection and investigate its possible association with anemia. METHODS： Ninety-three consecutive patients （62 males and 31 females） with chronic HCV infection, who had never re- ceived antiviral therapy or recombinant EPO, were enrolled in the study. Circulating anti-EPO were detected in the serum by using an ELISA assay. Quantitative determination of serum EPO levels was done by radioimmunoassay. HCV RNA viral load t and genotype sequencing were also performed. RESULTS： Circulating anti-EPO were detected in 10.8% of HCV-infected patients and the prevalence of anti-EPO was significantly higher in patients with anemia （19.4% vs 5.3%, P=0.040） compared to that in those without anemia. Compared to anti-EPO negative cases, anti-EPO positive patients had higher frequency of anemia （70.0% vs 34.9%, P=0.030）, lower EPO concentrations （median 16.35 vs 30.65 mU/mL, P=0.005）, and higher HCV RNA viral load （median 891.5x103 vs 367.5x 103 IU/mL, P=0.016）. In multivariate regression anal- ysis the presence of anti-EPO remained an independent predictor of anemia （adjusted OR： 14.303, 95% CI： 1.417-36.580, P=0.024）. EPO response to anemia was less prominent among anti-EPO positive patients （P=0.001）. CONCLUSIONS： Circulating anti-EPO are detected in a significant proportion of treatment-naive HCV-infected patients and are independently associated with anemia, suggesting a further implication of autoimmunity in the pathophysiology of HCV-related anemia.

Subtalar dislocation without associated fractures: Case report and review of literature

Isolated subtalar dislocations are unusual injuries due to the inherent instability of the talus. Subtalar dislocations are frequently associated with fractures of the malleoli, the talus, the calcaneus or the fifth metatarsal. Four types of subtalar dislocation have been described according to the direction of the foot in relation to the talus: medial, lateral posterior and anterior. It has been shown that some of these dislocations may spontaneously reduce. A rare case of a 36-year-old male patient who sustained a closed medial subtalar dislocation without any associated fractures of the ankle is reported. The patient suffered a pure closed medial subtalar dislocation that is hardly reported in the literature. Six months after injury the patient did not report any pain, had a satisfactory range of motion, and no signs of residual instability or early posttraumatic osteoarthritis. The traumatic mechanism, the treatment options, and the importance of a stable and prompt closed reduction and early mobilization are discussed.

Prevalence of anti-HAV antibodies in multitransfused patients with beta-thalassemia

AIM: To detect the prevalence of anti-HAV IgG antibodies in adult multitransfused beta-thalassemic patients. METHODS: We studied 182 adult beta-thalassemic patients and 209 controls matched for age and sex from the same geographic area, at the same time. Anti-HAV IgG antibodies, viral markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection were evaluated. RESULTS: Anti-HAV IgG antibodies were detected more frequently in thalassemic patients (133/182; 73.1%) than in healthy controls (38/209; 18.2%, P < 0.0005). When we retrospectively evaluated the prevalence of anti-HAV IgG antibodies in 176/182 (96.7%) thalassemic patients, whose medical history was available for the previous ten years, it was found that 83 (47.2%) of them were continuously anti-HAV IgG positive, 16 (9.1%) acquired anti-HAV IgG antibody during the previous ten years, 49 (27.8%) presented anti-HAV positivity intermittently and 28 (15.9%) were anti-HAV negative continuously. CONCLUSION: Multitransfused adult beta-thalassemic patients present higher frequency of anti-HAV IgG antibodies than normal population of the same geographic area. This difference is difficult to explain, but it can be attributed to the higher vulnerability of thalassemics to HAV infection and to passive transfer of anti-HAV antibodies by blood transfusions.
