Application of Simple Adaptive Control to Water Hydraulic Servo Cylinder System

Although conventional model reference adaptive control （MRAC） achieves good tracking performance for cylinder control, the controller structure is much more complicated and has less robustness to disturbance in real applications. This paper discusses the use of simple adaptive control （SAC） for positioning a water hydraulic servo cylinder system. Compared with MRAC, SAC has a simpler and lower order structure, i.e., higher feasibility. The control performance of SAC is examined and evaluated on a water hydraulic servo cylinder system. With the recent increased concerns over global environmental problems, the water hydraulic technique using pure tap water as a pressure medium has become a new drive source comparable to electric, oil hydraulic, and pneumatic drive systems. This technique is also preferred because of its high power density, high safety against fire hazards in production plants, and easy availability. However, the main problems for precise control in a water hydraulic system are steady state errors and overshoot due to its large friction torque and considerable leakage flow. MRAC has been already applied to compensate for these effects, and better control performances have been obtained. However, there have been no reports on the application of SAC for water hydraulics. To make clear the merits of SAC, the tracking control performance and robustness are discussed based on experimental results. SAC is confirmed to give better tracking performance compared with PI control, and a control precision comparable to MRAC （within 10 μm of the reference position） and higher robustness to parameter change, despite the simple controller. The research results ensure a wider application of simple adaptive control in real mechanical systems.

In this research, the positioning control of water hydraulic servo cylinder system with the simple adaptive control (SAC) is discussed. Conventional model reference adaptive control (MRAC) also achieves good tracking performance for cylinder control, but the controller structure was much complicated and was not easy to be realized in application. Compared with MRAC, SAC has simpler and lower order structure, i.e., has higher feasibility. But only few papers concerning with the application of the control performance of SAC to hydraulics and pneumatics are available, especially for water hydraulics. In this paper, we will examine and evaluate the control performance of the SAC strategy and it is confirmed that SAC gives better tracking performance compared with PI control.

Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of intermittent claudication in patients with lumbar canal stenosis

Spinal nerve roots have a peculiar structure, different from the arrangements in the peripheral nerve. The nerve roots are devoid of lymphatic vessels but are immersed in the cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) within the subarachnoid space. The blood supply of nerve roots depends on the blood flow from both and peripheral direction(ascending) and the spinal cord direction(descending). There is no hypovascular region in the nerve root, although there exists a so-called water-shed of the bloodstream in the radicular artery itself. Increased mechanical compression promotes the disturbance of CSF flow, circulatory disturbance starting from the venous congestion and intraradicular edema formation resulting from the breakdown of the blood-nerve barrier. Although this edema may diffuse into CSF when the subarachnoid space is preserved, the endoneurial fluid pressure may increase when the area is closed by increased compression. On the other hand, the nerve root tissue has already degenerated under the compression and the numerous macrophages releasing various chemical mediators, aggravating radicular symptomsthat appear in the area of Wallerian degeneration. Prostaglandin E1(PGE1) is a potent vasodilator as well as an inhibitor of platelet aggregation and has therefore attracted interest as a therapeutic drug for lumbar canal stenosis. However, investigations in the clinical setting have shown that PGE1 is effective in some patients but not in others, although the reason for this is unclear.

In recent decades,silicon photonics has attracted much attention in telecom and data-com areas.Constituted of high refractive-index contrast waveguides on silicon-on-insulator(SOI),a variety of integrated photonic passive and active devices have been implemented supported by excellent optical properties of silicon in the mid-infrared spectrum.The main advantage of the silicon photonics is the ability to use complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)process-compatible fabrication technologies,resulting in high-volume production at low cost.On the other hand,explosively growing traffic in the telecom,data center and high-performance computer demands the data flow to have high speed,wide bandwidth,low cost,and high energy-efficiency,as well as the photonics and electronics to be integrated for ultra-fast data transfer in networks.In practical applications,silicon photonics started with optical interconnect transceivers in the data-com first,and has been now extended to innovative applications such as multi-port optical switches in the telecom network node and integrated optical phased arrays(OPAs)in light detection and ranging(LiDAR).This paper overviews the progresses of silicon photonics from four points reflecting the recent advances mentioned above.CMOS-based silicon photonic platform technologies,applications to optical transceiver in the data-com network,applications to multi-port optical switches in the telecom network and applications to OPA in LiDAR system.

Research on Lightning Protection of Overhead Power Distribution Lines

There are two major protective methods against lightning outages on overhead distribution lines.One is a surge arrester,and the other is an overhead ground wire.The surge arresters have rather constant effect regardless of the cause of the lightning outage.On the other hand,the effect of an overhead ground wire is quite different in two major causes,the direct lightning hit and the induced overvoltage.It is sufficient to provide surge arresters with an interval of 300 m for protection against the induced overvoltage caused by the nearby lightning stroke.Use of an overhead ground wire together with surge arresters is effective for lightning protection against the direct lightning hit to a distribution line.Puncture of surge arresters is the popular outage when the outage caused by the insulation break decreases sufficiently.Also,the existence of nearby trees leads to the line break due to the side flash from a tree.Advanced lightning protection equipment with ZnO arrester components is popular in Japan.Modeling of a pole transformer and application of an electromagnetic analysis method,such as FDTD method,to surge phenomena is considerably advanced.

Mitochondrial haplogroups associated with Japanese centenarians, Alzheimer's patients, Parkinson's patients, type 2 diabetic patients and healthy non-obese young males

The relationships between five classes of Japanese people （i.e., 96 centenarians, 96 Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） patients, 96 Parkinson＇s disease （PD） patients, 96 type 2 diabetic （T2D） patients, and 96 healthy non-obese young males） and their mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphism （mtSNP） frequencies at individual mtDNA positions of the entire mitochondrial genome were examined using the radial basis function （RBF） network and the modified method. New findings of mitochondrial haplogroups were obtained for individual classes. The five classes of people were associated with the following haplogroups： Japanese centenarians-M7b2, D4b2a, and B5b; Japanese AD patients-G2a, B4cl, and N9b1; Japanese PD patients-M7b2, B4e, and B5b; Japanese T2D patients-B5b, M8al, G, D4, and F1; and Japanese healthy non-obese young males-D4g and D4b1b. From the points of common haplogroups among the five classes, the cente- narians have the common haplogroups M7b2 and B5b with the PD patients and common haplogroup B5b with the T2D patients. In addition, the 112 Japanese semi-supercentenarians （over 105 years old） recently reported were also examined by the method proposed. The results obtained were the haplogroups D4a, B4c1a, M7b2, F1, M1, and B5b. These results are different from the previously reported haplogroup classifications. As the proposed analysis method can predict a person＇s mtSNP constitution and the probabilities of becoming a centenarian, AD patient, PD patient, or T2D patient, it may be useful in initial diagnosis of various diseases.

New approach to resolve the amount of Quaternary uplift and associated denudation of the mountain ranges in the Japanese Islands

Low-temperature thermochronology is a widely used tool for revealing denudation histories of mountain ranges. Although this technique has been applied mainly to continental orogens, such as the European Alps, Himalayas, and Andes, recent technological development of low-temperature thermochronology has made it applicable to a wider variety of mountain ranges with various sizes and tectonic histories. The Japanese Islands comprise young and active island arcs, where an early stage of mountain range formation is observed. Numerous attempts have been made to constrain the uplift and denudation histories of the mountains in the Japanese Islands using geologic, geomorphologic, or geodetic methods. However, the number of thermochronometric attempts has been limited primarily due to the small amount of total denudation since the initiation of the uplift. In this review paper, we introduce the tectonic and geomorphic settings of the mountain ranges in the Japanese Islands, and discuss previous attempts to estimate uplift or denudation of the Japanese mountains using methods other than ther- mochronology. Furthermore, we discuss problems of the thermochronometric applications in revealing denudation histories of the Japanese mountains. Finally, we present a case study of the Kiso Range in central Japan and discuss the current effectiveness and applicability of low-temperature thermochronology to the Japanese mountainous areas.

Investigation of energy-efficient solid desiccant system for wheat drying

The study investigates the applicability of solid desiccant system for drying of freshly harvested wheat grains in order to reduce the moisture content to an optimum level.Fast and low-temperature drying systems are required by today’s drying industries in order to provide economical and safe drying.Therefore,comparison of desiccant drying has been made with the conventional method in terms of drying kinetics,allowable time for safe storage,the total time for drying cycle,and overall energy consumption.It has been found that the air conditions of proposed desiccant drying system provides a high drying rate and longer allowable storage time for safe drying.As the desiccants possess water adsorbing ability by means of vapor pressure deficit,therefore,the desiccant system successfully provides low-temperature drying which ensures the quality of wheat grains.Overall energy consumption is estimated for both conventional hot air drying and desiccant drying system.It has been found that the desiccant system requires less energy as drying is accomplished at minimum level of air flow and within allowable storage time.In addition,the overall performance index of the desiccant system is higher at all temperatures.The study is useful for developing a low-cost and sustainable drying technology for various agricultural products.

Droplet digital PCR for quantification of ITGA6 in a stool mRNA assay for the detection of colorectal cancers

AIM To investigate the use of droplet digital polymerase chain reaction(dd PCR) for detecting host m RNA markers in stools as a non-invasive test for colorectal cancer screening.METHODS dd PCR and quantitative PCR were compared side by side for their performance in the detection of ITGA6 and ITGA6 A transcripts in stool samples obtained from patients with various types of colorectal lesions(advanced adenomas and stage Ⅱ-Ⅳ colorectal cancers) and control(patients displaying no pathological findings) using duplex Taq Man reactions for both methods. ITGA6 and ITGA6 A were chosen for this proof-of-concept study based on their relative medium and low abundance in stool samples, respectively, as established in a previous study.RESULTS We found that the dd PCR and q PCR methods per-formed equally well in this Taq Man duplex assay for the detection of ITGA6 and ITGA6 A transcripts in stools of patients with colorectal lesions. For ITGA6, receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis showed comparable areas under the curve of 0.91(P < 0.0001) and 0.89-0.90(P < 0.0001) for the prediction of advanced adenomas and colorectal cancers, respectively. ITGA6 A, which was detected at very low levels in control patients, was found to be significantly elevated(over 40 times) in stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ colorectal cancers(P < 0.0002). Comparison of the two sets of data revealed a strong correlation of the copy numbers obtained by dd PCR and q PCR for both ITGA6 and ITGA6 A.CONCLUSION We found that ITGA6 and ITGA6 A detection in stools of patients with colorectal cancers with dd PCR is comparable to that of q PCR using Taq Man assays.
