Sociodemographic, Clinical and Quality of Life Aspects of People Aged over 50 Years Living with HiV/AiDS

introduction: in the last few years, there has been a growth in the number of cases of people with HiV/AiDS aged 50 years and older. This is explained by the inclusion of antiretroviral therapy, increased survival of patients as well as by the growth in the number of infected people in this age group. Objective: To analyze the association between sociodemographic and clinical characteristics with the QOL of people aged 50 years or older living with HiV/AiDS. Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional study conducted in the outpatient clinic of a reference hospital in Natal, Brazil. The sample consisted of 50 subjects, aged over 50, seropositive for HiV and with cognitive conditions to answer the interview. Authors used sociodemographic and clinical evaluation tools and the WHOQOL-HiV BrEF scale. results: Sociodemographic: respondents’ average age was 57.32 years, 58% male, 38% brown, 26% incomplete primary education, 46% single, 56% retired, 70% with a monthly income of 1 to 2 minimum wages and 70% Catholic. Clinical: 60% have a partner without the diagnosis of HiV/AiDS;62% had not been hospitalized previously;66% did not have opportunistic infections;40% indicated that there was a change in the physiological sexual function after the onset of the disease. Quality of life: people living with HiV/AiDS had low scores in QOL domains. When associating sociodemographic and clinical aspects, it was observed that they had associations with QOL, especially in regard to education, income, religion, change in sexual function and feelings. Conclusion: The spiritual domain was highlighted with the best performance, collaborating to facing, hope and resilience of HiV/AiDS.

Melon Seedlings Phytomass under Poultry Litter Biochar Doses

The use of organic waste for the preparation of seedling substrates is an important environmental and economic option. in this perspective, substrates using biochar emerges as an alternative for seedling production due to their favorable physical and chemical characteristics. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of doses of poultry litter biochar as a substrate constituent for the production and quality of the seedlings. The work was conducted in a semi protected environment, belonging to the Federal University of Campina Grande—UFCG. The statistical design used was completely randomized in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, consisting of 6 doses of biochar (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 t∙ha−1) and two varieties of melon (Yellow and Hales Best Jumbo) with 4 repetitions totaling 48 experimental units. The fresh and dry plant phytomass mass (aerial, roots and total), root length and the quality of seedlings were evaluated. it was concluded that the addition of poultry litter biochar to the substrate was beneficial, promoting an increase in the analyzed seedling variables, being the ideal dose for good development of melon seedlings 12 t∙ha−1. The Yellow variety presented a better response than the Hales Best Jumbo to the charcoal application. Considering the advantages of the use of poultry litter biochar on the substrate composition, found in the present study, its utilization constitutes a viable alternative for the development of melon seedlings and for the environmental disposal of the poultry litter.

Water Quality and the impact by Contaminants of Emerging Concern: The Case of Verde river in Campos Gerais

in this article, we report the results of the work carried out on the Verde river, a predominantly urban river located in the city of Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil. Developed in three stages, it aimed to evaluate the water quality through physical-chemical parameters, the presence of caffeine as a chemical tracer, and the compound Triclosan (TCS), considered a pollutant of emerging concern. An attempt was made to identify possible polluting sources along the river. Samples were collected at 4 points from the spring region, with sampling upstream and downstream of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The physical-chemical parameters were determined in situ, through portable analysers, as well as in the laboratory, in this case, through analyses using molecular absorption spectroscopy. For the determination of TCS and Caffeine, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used, preceded by a pre-concentration step in the solid phase (SPE), and the techniques were implemented after validation. The physicochemical evaluations of the surface samples showed a decline in water quality after the STP. Mean total phosphorus concentrations of 1.0 mg·L-1 (±0.4), as well as dissolved oxygen (DO) levels below 5.0 mg·L-1 were verified downstream of the STP. Caffeine concentrations for Verde river were between 49.0 to 299.0 μg·L-1, verified upstream and downstream of the STP. The results demonstrated the relationship between the presence of caffeine and impaction, either by the input of raw sewage or by treated effluent. TCS was detected by chromatographic analysis, downstream of the STP, with an average concentration of 27.6 (±1.7) μg·L-1, noting that its presence was associated with the reactor maintenance procedure, with the STP in the process called bypass. Obtaining quality data from Verde river is important for the protection of the environment and affects the health of the population.

Water mites (Hydrachnidia) are common external parasites of the medically important mosquitoes (Culicidae). Between April 2014 and April 2015, 64 mites from three genus, i>Arrenurusi> 71.9%, i>Limnocharesi> 3.1%, and i>Hydrachnai> 25.0%, were collected from female mosquitoes in two rural locations near Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Dipterous species parasitized by water mites belonging to seven species: i>Anophelesi> (i>Nys.i>) darling, i>An. evansae, Aedesi> (i>Och.i>) scapularis, Ae. serratus, Mansonia (Man.) wilsoni, Psorophora (Jan.) ferox, Ps. varipes. The most common specimens to accommodate the water mites were i>Anopheles i>(i>Nys.i>) darlingi and Psorophora (i>Jan.i>) varipes. The prevalence of parasitism of mosquitoes by water mites found in this study was less than 5. However, few studies have addressed the ecological role of mites and their biotopes, as well as host-parasite interactions in Brazil.

Left-Handed Students and Clinical Practice in Dentistry: Adaptations, Difficulties and realities Experienced in the Academic Environment

Objectives: To verify the existence of difficulties throughout the course of dentistry clinical practices, identify musculoskeletal pain, and evaluate frequency and intensity of pain/discomfort (if existent) in different regions of the body, experienced by left- handed students in comparison to right-handed students of the odontology courses of the state of rio Grande do Norte (Northeast Brazil). Methods: A general questionnaire was applied to identify left-handed students in a population of 750 students, enrolled in clinical courses. An adaptation of the Grad-Corllet Diagram and a specific questionnaire on clinical practices were applied to the selected students. Descriptive statistics was utilized to analyze data of the specific questionnaire, and Mann-Whitney statistics, chi-square or Fisher’s Exact tests (with a 5% significance level) were utilized for the Grad-Corllet Diagram, searching for an association be- tween discomfort/pain in different body regions and manual laterality. results: All students presented higher percentage of pain in the lumbar and neck/cervical re- gions. However, left-handed students presented higher values, with statistical signifi- cance levels of p = 0.041 for lower back, p = 0.002 for neck and p = 0.003 for cervical region. Conclusions: The majority of left-handed students classified “moderate” the difficulty of working with equipment designed for right-handers. There was high frequency of musculoskeletal pain/discomfort, with relevant statistical results for left- handed students regarding intensity. it is suggested that the participating institutions evaluate the adoption of inclusion politics, re-adapt the infrastructure to include equipment designed for left-handers, and finally provide adequate work conditions for all students.

The combination of therapies may be the promising future for the treatment of esthetic alterations more efficiently and in less time, in order to obtain an excellent result. Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of hydrolysed collagen associated with radiofrequency and electrostimulation in the treatment of flaccidity in the abdominal and gluteal regions. The sample consisted of 6 women, evaluated through evaluation protocols, questionnaires, dynamometry, ultrasound exams, and histological analysis. The volunteers were distributed into three subgroups: hydrolysed collagen group (G-1), radiofrequency + hydrolysed collagen group (G-2) and radiofrequency + hydrolysed collagen + electrostimulation group (G-3). The ultrasound analysis of the abdominal muscles showed an increase in muscle thickness in all groups, but not significant (p > 0.05). The histological analysis showed an evident increase in type I collagen in groups G-2 and G-3, with proliferating cells (Ki67+). The results of dynamometry showed significant values in different times (p re was a significant result in the infraumbilical perimetry analysis, when compared between the groups with 30 days (p = 0.03) and with 60 days (p = 0.04). All participants rated the treatment positively. The use of combined therapies has shown superior results for the treatment of abdominal and gluteal flaccidity when compared with its isolated use, being the combination of therapies important in the treatment of flaccidity.

The experiment was carried out in the greenhouse of the DEAg/UFCG, Campina Grande (PB), Brazil, to evaluate the growth and development of the bell pepper subjected to fertilization with biochar and nitrogen. The experiment was conducted in pots under greenhouse conditions. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design, in 4 × 4 factorial scheme, relative to four doses of biochar (0;7;14 and 21 m3⋅ha−1) and four doses of nitrogen (0;40;80 and 120 kg⋅ha−1), with three replicates. Considering the analysis of growth of bell pepper plants during the first 45 DAS, is recommended the average dose of biochar of 19 m3⋅ha−1 on vegetable behavior. Under the conditions of the experiment, nitrogen favored only the absolute growth rate of plant height and the stem diameter.
