Twelve cassava landraces were evaluated for sources of resistance genes to diseases and pests of major economic importance in Africa. The objective was to assess their levels of field resistance to mosaic disease （ACMD）, bacterial blight （CBB）, anthracnose （CAD）, and green mite （CGM）, compared to TMS30572, an elite cultivar widely adopted in Africa. Considerable genotypic variation was observed among cultivars for resistance to ACMD and CGM but not for CBB and CAD. The lowest mean incidence of 12% and severity of 1.8 on a scale of 1-5 for ACMD was recorded for Atu, a landrace with farmer acceptable qualities. in comparison, the improved cultivar, TMS 30572, had a mean disease incidence of 72% and a severity score of 2.8. Another landrace, MS-20 had the lowest CGM damage score （2.1） while TMS 30572 emerged as one of the susceptible cultivars with a damage score of 3. Additional sources of resistance to ACMD and CGM that may possibly be better than the popular improved cultivar, TMS 30572, were identified in this study. These could serve as novel sources of additional genes to complement existing resources for elite cassava breeding in Africa.

in a previous study from our laboratory, fucoxanthin purified from brown algae, Sargassum wightii Greville has found to exhibit antioxidant activity and inhibition of angiotensin-i-converting enzyme(ACE)in vitro. The present study aims in understanding the protective effect of fucoxanthin purified from S. wightii against diabetes with hypertension in in vivo. Diabetes and hypertension were induced in rat by streptozotocin and sodium chloride treatment, respectively. in diabetes with hypertension rat, the blood pressure was increased along with hyperglycemia. Administration of fucoxanthin significantly reduced the blood pressure and ACE activity in diabetes with hypertension rat. Furthermore, administration of fucoxanthin significantly reduced the hyperglycemic state. The activity of various enzymes in the liver(hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-phosphatase)and serum(creatine kinase)were normalized to that of control level. The level of glycogen, glycoprotein component and lipid profile were equivalent to control level by fucoxanthin administration in diabetes with hypertension rats. Fucoxanthin ameliorated the oxidative stress by preserving the endogenous antioxidant levels in diabetes with hypertension rats. Also, the pancreatic histological integrity was similar to that of control level in diabetes with hypertension rats by fucoxanthin treatment. Altogether, fucoxanthin showed dual antidiabetic and antihypertensive activity in vivo.

Effect of metal content on the activity and product selectivity of n-decane hydroisomerization over Ni-Pd/HY zeolite

Metal-loaded zeolite catalysts were synthesized and examined in the hydroisomerization of ***,zeolite Y was impregnated with 0.1 wt%Pd and varying amounts of Ni（0.1-0.5 wt%].The crystallinity of the metal-loaded catalysts was characterized by X-ray diffraction,and the average metal particle size was determined by transmission electron *** states of Pd and Ni were identified by X-ray photoelectron *** temperature-programmed desorption analysis revealed the occurrence of ion-exchange of some of the catalyst acid sites with Ni-（2＋）.The reducibility of the HY zeolite-supported Pd,Ni,and Pd-Ni catalysts was studied by temperature-programmed *** hydroisomerization of n-decane over the prepared catalyst was conducted at 200-450℃ under 1 *** addition of up to 0.3 wt%over 0.1 wt%Pd/HY enhanced the n-decane conversion and isomerization product *** improved selectivity of the mono- and dibranched isomers suggested the occurrence of a protonated cyclopropane intermediate ***,further Ni addition above 0.3 wt%considerably reduced the activity and isomerization *** bimetallic catalysts were more selective toward the formation of dibranched isomers,i.e.,those containing a higher octane number.

Polyurethane-SAPO-34 mixed matrix membrane for CO_2/CH_4 and CO_2/N_2 separation

SAPO-34 nanocrystals(inorganic filler) were incorporated in polyurethane membranes and the permeation properties of CO_2, CH_4,and N_2 gases were explored. in this regard, the synthesized PU-SAPO-34 mixed matrix membranes(MMMs) were characterized via SEM, AFM, TGA, XRD and FTiR analyses. Gas permeation properties of PU-SAPO-34 MMMs with SAPO-34 contents of 5 wt%, 10 wt% and 20 wt% were investigated. The permeation results revealed that the presence of 20 wt% SAPO-34 resulted in 4.45%, 18.24% and 40.2% reductions in permeability of CO_2,CH_4,and N_2, respectively, as compared to the permeability of neat polyurethane membrane. Also,the findings showed that at the pressure of 1.2 MPa, the incorporation of 20 wt% SAPO-34 into the polyurethane membranes enhanced the selectivity of CO_2/CH_4 and CO_2/N_2, 14.43 and 37.46%, respectively. in this research, PU containing 20 wt% SAPO-34 showed the best separation performance. For the first time, polynomial regression(PR) as a simple yet accurate tool yielded a mathematical equation for the prediction of permeabilities with high accuracy(R^2>99%).

Background/Objective:Nanotechnology is a recent technology,but its application to meat preservation is *** and Methods:The silver bio-nanoparticle was sythensized from the extract of pawpaw and 1 mM solution of silver nitrate using standard *** samples were treated with solutions containing 10%-20%silver bio-nanoparticle suspension and were kept for 2,4 and 6 ***,crude fat,ash,weight loss,water loss,solid gain,absorbed silver ion,bacterial count and sensory characteristics were determined using standard ***:The protein,crude fat,ash,weight loss,water loss,solid gain,absorbed silver ion and total plate count varied from 21.63%-30.89%,3.71%-4.21%,1.55%-3.98%,0.04 to 0.25 g,0.42-0.84,0.38-0.62,18.00-48.42μg/mL and 2.74×105-1.39×10^(11) cfu/g *** results showed that qualities of meat were positively affected by silver bionanoparticle ***:Meat treated with10%of silver bio-nanoparticle concentration for 4 h had the best quality.

Jute/epoxy hybrid laminated biocomposites were manufactured by using illite clay particles at various content （5 wt.% - 20 wt.%）. The effects of hybridization on the morphology, structure, and mechanical properties were investigated. The properties of the biocomposites reinforced with jute fibers were mainly influenced by the interfacial adhesion between the jute fibers and the epoxy matrix. An alkali treatment was applied to improve the interfacial fiber-matrix adhesion and thus obtaining better mechanical properties. Besides the chemical treatment, epoxy hybridization using clay particles also had a strong effect on the overall properties of laminated biocomposites. The mechanical properties of the jute/epoxy biocomposites reinforced with illite clay increased with clay content, up to an optimum value at 15 wt.%. The average technique and the laminates theory were performed to validate the coherence of the elastic moduli between the calculated and experimental values. A difference between the experimental and predicted data was observed, which was attributed to the simplifying assumptions made in both models. The laminates theory gave better overall predictions.

Digital devices have reshaped human communication in today's technology driven society. These devices, as a medium of identity and self-expression, now determine personal, domestic, and corporate interactions by providing access to digital and online facilities enabled by an influx of computer and portable mobile devices into the Nigerian market. The effect of this digitalization on self-expression cuts across contexts and age categories. This study, driven by new media theory and the theory of transitivity in systemic functional linguistics, examined the influence of digital devices on identity and self-expression among undergraduate teenagers in Osogbo, Osun State. Carefully selected through stratified and convenience sampling techniques, undergraduate teenagers involved in the survey—which employed a questionnaire—and focus group discussions, revealed that their preference for interactive chats, social media picture galleries, captions on photographs, and video subtitles outweighed their propensity to read long or academic texts and partake in online economic activities. Most of our respondents explored online communication through their mobile devices, while others accessed the internet on personal computers at home with little or no parental guidance or supervision. Subsequently, age falsification, wrong or misleading self-identification, and a consequent cultural literacy were common among undergraduate teenagers online. A selfregulation facility was then recommended alongside parental and caregiver monitoring of teenagers' virtual communication to reduce the influence of social media on teenagers' time management and self-identity. Further research is also recommended in the field of iCT to detect age falsification and other forms of online false-identity among minors.

Tall buildings are being designed and built across a wide range of cities.A poorly designed tall building can tremendously increase the building’s appetite for ***,this paper aims to determine the design strategies that help a high-rise office building to be more energy *** this purpose,a comparative study on twelve case buildings in three climate groups(temperate,sub-tropical&tropical)was *** exterior envelope,building form and orientation,service core placement,plan layout,and special design elements like atria and sky gardens were the subject of *** of different design strategies for reducing the cooling,heating,ventilation and electric lighting energy ***,lessons from these buildings’were defined for the three ***,a compari-son of building energy performance data with international benchmarks confirmed that in temperate and sub-tropical climates sustainable design strategies for high-rise buildings were performing well,as a result leading to lower energy ***,for the tropics the design of high-rise buildings needs additional consideration.
