Human-induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs)are an accessible source of adult-derived,patient-specific pluripotent stem cells for use in basic research,drug discovery,disease modeling,and stem cell *** the accessibility of methods to obtain iPSCs regardless of the cell source can enhance their clinical ***,our purpose is to report a simple protocol to obtain iPS-like cells from urine-derived renal epithelial cells(RECs)using different extracellular matrices and transfection *** this study,we began by culturing urine-derived cells from healthy donors to establish a primary culture of renal epithelial cells,followed by their ***,we generated iPS-like cells by transfecting renal epithelial cells(RECs)with vectors expressing Oct4,Sox2,L-Myc,Lin-28,and Klf4,and we compared the efficacy of different extracellular matrices and transfection *** resultant iPS-like cells showed a human embryonic stem cell-like morphology and expressed the specific pluripotency markers Oct3/4,Nanog,Lin28,and *** concluded that Lipofectamine Stem Cell transfection reagent is more effective than FuGENE in obtaining iPS-like cells under the conditions ***,the three matrices are similar in their efficiency of obtaining iPS-like *** report provides an experimental protocol for obtaining and generating iPS-like cells from urine samples for further cell therapy research on different human diseases.

According to the main international clinical guidelines,the recommended treatment for locally-advanced rectal cancer is neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by ***,doubts have been raised about the appropriate definition of clinical complete response(cCR)after neoadjuvant therapy and the role of surgery in patients who achieve a *** resection is associated with significant morbidity and decreased quality of life(QoL),which is especially relevant given the favourable prognosis in this patient subset. Accordingly, therehas been a growing interest in alternative approaches with less morbidity,including the organ-preserving watch and wait strategy, in which surgery isomitted in patients who have achieved a cCR. These patients are managed with aspecific follow-up protocol to ensure adequate cancer control, including the earlyidentification of recurrent disease. However, there are several open questionsabout this strategy, including patient selection, the clinical and radiologicalcriteria to accurately determine cCR, the duration of neoadjuvant treatment, therole of dose intensification (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy), optimal followupprotocols, and the future perspectives of this approach. in the present review,we summarize the available evidence on the watch and wait strategy in thisclinical scenario, including ongoing clinical trials, QoL in these patients, and thecontroversies surrounding this treatment approach.

Water Quality Assessment of Jose Antonio Alzate Dam, the Lerma River and its Tributaries in the State of Mexico, Mexico

Water quality was evaluated at sites of the Jose Antonio Alzate Dam, the rivers Lerma, Tejalpa and Temoaya in the State of Mexico, Mexico. The variables measured included pH, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia, nitrates, sulfates, sulfides and metal concentrations (Cu and Pb). Chemical speciation for dissolved metals in the aqueous phase was obtained using measured concentrations and the software MiNEQL+ (4.5);metal partition coefficients was also obtained using dissolved and particulate concentrations of metals. Hydraulic behavior of the studied water bodies was investigated and the fate of Cu and Pb ions was simulated. The simulation results indicate that the Lerma River provides the majority of organic matter and metal contaminants as a result of a poor oxygen saturation velocity, and showed a slight improvement when the Lerma River is subjected to its tributaries Tejalapa and Temoaya Rivers. Under the reducing conditions predominating along the dam and from the results of aqueous phase chemical speciation, it was found that sulfide metal-associated species are the ones that predominate. it was demonstrated that in general, the rivers Tejalapa and Temoaya presented the best water quality. The Lerma River oxygen saturation improves after the rainy season, but it worsens during the dry season. Due to irregular topography, the small slope prevailing in the Lerma River, and the almost nonexisting water flow, zones with different characteristics are formed within the dam. The sedimentation contributes in the generation of local eddies causing the existence of a small diffusive flow. The order of partition coefficient was Pb > Cu. Cu presented the highest risk levels in the dissolved phase.

Holistic Evaluation of the Morbidity Due to Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and its Main Risk Factors in the State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Objective: To evaluate the morbidity due to diabetes mellitus type 2 within the State of San Luis Potosí, México, through a strong methodology, through which the multivariate relations were identified of the main social and environmental determiners in the disease, thus managing to quantify their respective levels of responsibility. Material and Methods: This evaluation began as a hypothesis of a multicasual theoretical model on diabetes mellitus and its main determining factors, which was analyzed through the application of multivariate exploratory statistical methodologies and confirmed as it is the case of the principal components analysis and the structural equation models. Results: Three components were extracted that explain the 96% of the total variance of the indicators;the main risk factors which were identified in the first component were, the use of the car, age, homes with TV use, urban life and feminine population;the indicators from the second and third component have little influence in the impact of the disease. Conclusions: the study shows the usefulness of the model for the analysis and prioritization of the environmental and social determiners of the disease, information that could sustain the design of public guidelines for the prevention and control of the analyzed disease.

in this research we studied the feasibility of applying phytoremediation in the mine tailings at La Concha site. The extraction efficiency of heavy metals was studied, as well as the tolerance to high pollution and biomass generation of Lolium multiflorum, known as italian ryegrass, in the aggressive soils composed almost entirely by mine wastes. Ryegrass seeds were grown in mine tailings containing Cu, Mn, Zn, and Pb concentrations of around 800, 4600, 3200, and 5400 ppm respectively. Triplicate analyses of soils without treatment and with treatments consisting in organic matter(OM) additions were carried out during 90 days. italian ryegrass has a high tolerance to polluted mine tailings, although the addition of small quantities of organic matter improves the extraction of metals. The highest metals uptake from tailings was achieved through treatment with 20 % OM additions, with varying efficiencies of around 50% for Zn and Pb in 90 days, although for Cu and Mn these were smaller, namely of 28 and 14% respectively. These results show that phytoremediation of mine tailings is possible through grass planting that was able to remove the heavy metals.

Besides their possible effects on the development of inflammatory bowel disease(iBD),some environmental factors can modulate the clinical course of both ulcerative colitis(UC) and Crohn's disease(CD).This review is mainly devoted to describing the current knowledge of the impact of some of these factors on the outcome of iBD,with special emphasis on smoking and *** the impact of smoking on the susceptibility to develop CD and UC is firmly established,its influence on the clinical course of both diseases is still *** CD,active smoking is a risk factor for postoperative *** this clinical setting,smoking cessation seems to be advantageous in those CD patients who were smokers at disease diagnosis,while smoking resumption may be of benefit in ex-smokers with resistant *** role of dietary habits on the development of iBD is far from being well ***,food intolerances are very frequent,but usually inconsistent among iBD patients,and therefore no general dietary recommendations can be made in these *** general,iBD patients should eat a diet as varied as *** the possible therapeutic role of some dietary components in iBD,lessons should be drawn from the investigation of the primary therapeutic effect of enteral nutrition in ***-fat diets seem to be particularly ***,some lipid sources,such as olive oil,medium-chain triglycerides,and perhaps omega-3 fatty acids,might have a therapeutic *** fiber may have a role in preventing relapses in inactive UC.

The Collapse of Culverts-Arch in Several Cities around the World, Technical Arguments for Their Maintenance and a Legal Proposal for Prohibiting Their Construction in Mexico

Construction underground pipes and underground culvertsarch (UCA) in order to transport the flow natural rivers and city’s sewage at the same time, is a practice that should be prohibited by the Mexico National Water Law (NWL). When UCA collapse, it causes severe damage to surrounding infrastructure, public and private property, and puts citizens’ lives at risk. This work presents some examples of UCA collapse incidents in several cities around the world, emphasizes how important preventive maintenance of these structures is, highlights the need to classify risk areas, and stresses the need to formulate norms and civil defense plans as article 83 of the NWL suggests. We also propose an addition to Fraction i, article 100 of the National Water Law, to protect the animal and plant life of its banks and safety of their natural runoff.

Postoperative Crohn’s disease recurrence: A practical approach

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that may involve any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. Although several drugs have proven efficacy in inducing and maintaining disease in remission, resectional surgery remains as a cornerstone in the management of the disease, mainly for the treatment of its stenosing and penetrating complications. However, the occurrence of new mucosal (endoscopic) lesions in the neoterminal ileum early after surgery is almost constant, it is followed in the mid-term by clinical symptoms and, in a proportion of patients, repeated intestinal resections are required. Pathogenesis of postoperative recurrence (POR) is not fully understood, but luminal factors (commensal microbes, dietary antigens) seem to play an important role, and environmental and genetic factors may also have a relevant influence. Many studies tried to identify clinical predictors for POR with heterogeneous results, and only smoking has repeatedly been associated with a higher risk of POR. ileocolonoscopy remains as the gold standard for the assessment of appearance and severity of POR, although the real usefulness of the available endoscopic score needs to be revisited and alternative techniques are emerging. Several drugs have been evaluated to prevent POR with limited success. Smoking cessation seems to be one of the more beneficial therapeutic measures. Aminosalicylates have only proved to be of marginal benefit, and they are only used in low-risk patients. Nitroimidazolic antibiotics, although efficient, are associated with a high rate of intolerance and might induce irreversible side effects when used for a long-term. Biodiversity in Chestnut Woodlots: Management Regimen vs Woodlot Size

This paper analyzes the effect of woodlot size and land-use intensity on the species richness of vascular plants, birds, beetles, and ants in Castanea sativa (chestnut) woodlots of the northwestern iberian Peninsula included in the category “9260 Castanea sativa woodland”, “Annex i, DC 92/43/European Community”. The results show that the surface area of the woodlot did not affect the richness of vascular plants and ants but did affect birds and beetles. The level of abandonment of the woodlot affected only the richness of vascular plants, while the use level had no significant impact on species richness of any of the groups. The degree of maturity of the woodlot, estimated by the tree-trunk circumference, determined only the richness of plants but not that of different groups of animals. in conclusion: 1) Plants and animals responded differently to woodlot size, abandonment, and the degree of maturity of the woodlots;2) Traditional agricultural practices do not negatively affect the biodiversity of the chestnut woodlots of the northwestern iberian Peninsula or favor plant diversity;and 3) A traditional use of these woodlots may continue to play an important role in maintaining the diversity of plant species in the area.

Evaluation of Growth Area Foliar Red Tomato Crop Using Markov Chains

The importance of evaluating the leaf area in red tomato plants aims to determine the growth and development of crops established two production cycles, spring-summer and autumn-winter to compare the influence of temperature on the growth of leaf area. Repeated, weekly samples were taken by identifying the week and determining the growth and leaf area development using Markov chains, using an array of transition to describe and represent in a flowchart the finite number of physiological States. With the analysis in the steady state process and applying the equations of odds, we get that leaf area growth is established from the seventh week shown in the first cycle (C1) with the chance of 0.266, 0.264 and 0.263, in the last two weeks. it was observed an increase of 6% in the cycle autumn-winter cycle compared spring-summer.
