Chemical expansion of solid oxide fuel cell materials: A brief overview

The importance of oxygen non-stoichiometry induced expansion, known as chemical expansion, for the mechanical properties of solid oxide fuel cells （SOFCs） is discussed. The methods used to measure chemical expansion and the defects responsible for its existence are introduced. Recent work demonstrating the origin of chemical expansion in fluorite structured oxides for SOFCs is presented. Models used to predict stress induced by chemical expansion in SOFCs, highlighting the necessity of considering electro-chemo-mechanical coupling relationships, are discussed.

Why did China Benefit from a Joint Venture Policy? A Case Study of Shanghai

Mandatory joint venture requirements have played an important role in many developing countries ＇foreign investment policies. However, such policies have been criticized in some of the economic literatures on the grounds that they deter investment and lead to the development of inefficient industries. A significant amount of foreign direct investment in Shanghai has been in the form of joint ventures. Yet, by many measures, Shanghai has benefited enormously. This article argues that there are three reasons to explain Shanghai＇s successful use of the joint venture for its industrial development. First, local firms and industries have had the capability and willingness to learn from joint ventures and other foreign invested firms. Second, the joint venture policy has been more likely than not to have ＂crowded in ＂ local investment rather than crowd it out. Third, investment authorities in Shanghai have had sufficient bureaucratic capacity and political insulation to prevent the joint venture policy from being manipulated by rent seekers.

Terrestrial laser scanning(TLS) is a useful technology for rock mass characterization. A laser scanner produces a massive point cloud of a scanned area, such as an exposed rock surface in an underground tunnel,with millimeter precision. The density of the point cloud depends on several parameters from both the TLS operational conditions and the specifications of the project, such as the resolution and the quality of the laser scan, the section of the tunnel, the distance between scanning stations, and the purpose of the scans. One purpose of the scan can be to characterize the rock mass and statistically analyze the discontinuities that compose it for further discontinuous modeling. in these instances, additional data processing and a detailed analysis should be performed on the point cloud to extract the parameters to define a discrete fracture network(DFN) for each discontinuity set. i-site studio is a point cloud processing software that allows users to edit and process laser scans. This software contains a set of geotechnical analysis tools that assist engineers during the structural mapping process, allowing for greater and more representative data regarding the structural information of the rock mass, which may be used for generating DFNs. This paper presents the procedures used during a laser scan for characterizing discontinuities in an underground limestone mine and the results of the scan as applied to the generation of DFNs for further discontinuous modeling.

Adsorption isotherms for SF cellulase from Trichoderma pssudokoningii on cotton, flax and viscose yarns were investigated to provide information about cellulase-cellulose binding on different types of cellulosic fibres. The half-saturation constants and maximum adsorption constants suggest that SF cellulase has greater affinity for viscose than for cotton and greater affinity for cotton than for flax. it is suggested that this is related to the different crystallinities and microporous structures of these fibre types. The fraction of adsorbable protein in the total cellulase was found to be the same for each of the three cellulase substrates.

Potential of the Random Forest Model on mapping of different desertification processes was studied in Muttuma watershed of mid-Murrumbidgee river region of New South Wales,*** vulnerability index was developed using climate,terrain,vegetation,soil and land quality indices to identify environmentally sensitive areas for *** Forest Model(RFM)was used to predict the different desertification processes such as soil erosion,salinization and waterlogging in the watershed and the information needed to train classification algorithms was obtained from satellite imagery interpretation and ground truth *** factors(evaporation,rainfall,temperature),terrain factors(aspect,slope,slope length,steepness,and wetness index),soil properties(pH,organic carbon,clay and sand content)and vulnerability indices were used as an explanatory *** accuracy and kappa index were calculated for training and testing *** recorded an overall accuracy rate of 87.7%and 72.1%for training and testing sites,*** found larger discrepancies between overall accuracy rate and kappa index for testing datasets(72.2%and 27.5%,respectively)suggesting that all the classes are not predicted *** prediction of soil erosion and no desertification process was good and poor for salinization and water-logging ***,the results observed give a new idea of using the knowledge of desertification process in training areas that can be used to predict the desertification processes at unvisited areas.

Sex determination(SD)involves mechanisms that determine whether an individual will develop into a male,female,or in rare cases,*** harbor extremely diverse SD systems,including hermaphroditism,environmental sex determination(ESD),genetic sex determination(GSD),and cytoplasmic sex determination(e.g.,Wolbachia controlled SD systems).Such diversity lays the groundwork for researching the evolution of SD in crustaceans,i.e.,transitions among different SD ***,most previous research has focused on understanding the mechanism of SD within a sin-gle lineage or species,overlooking the transition across different SD *** help bridge this gap,we summarize the understanding of SD in various clades of crustaceans,and discuss how different SD systems might evolve from one ***,we review the genetic basis for transitions between different SD systems(i.e.,Dmrt genes)and propose the microcrustacean Daphnia(clade Branchiopoda)as a model to study the transition from ESD to GSD.

Prolonged extra-oral period in dental avulsion is often associated with loss of viability of Periodontal fibroblasts (PDLF) and increased risk of ankylosis. Root surface treatment with bioactive agents to reduce the risk of ankylosis can be a potential strategy. The objective of the study was to investigate the impact of an engineered chitosan nanoparticles (CSNP), photosensitizer Rose Bengal (RB) functionalized CSNP (CSRB) and sustained dexamethasone (CSDEX) releasing CSNP for application in management of delayed replantation of avulsed teeth. The 3D PDLF-macrophage (Mϕ) collagen model was developed and exposed to LPS, MCSF, RANKL with and without CSDEX/CSNP. immunofluorescence and cytokine analysis was done at 2 and 7 days to assess cellular interactions. Maxillary right incisors in male Wistar rats were extracted, exposed to extraoral dry or LPS for 1 h and treated with or without CSDEX/CSRB for 1 min before replantation. Rats were euthanized after 21 days for micro-CT, TRAP, and immunofluorescence analysis. CSDEX/CSNP treatment in 3D model significantly reduced CD80, NFATc1, STAT6 and increased CD206 and periostin expression (p iL10, TGFβ1, MMP2 upregulated with CSDEX/CSNP (p in animal study significantly reduced resorption, ankylosis, TRAP activity and osteocalcin expression and increased periostin (pigher anti-inflammatory activity by downregulating TNFα, while CSNP upregulated TGFβ1, periostin, and downregulated MMP9. The combination of matrix stabilization with CSRB with periostin upregulation and sustained releasing CSDEX showed potential for hampering root resorption and ankylosis in dental avulsion.

Abstract Lagoon-based municipal wastewater treatment plants （WWTPs） are facing difficulties meeting the needs of rapid population growth as well as the more stringent requirements of discharge permits. Three municipal WWTPs were modified using a high surface area media with upgraded fine-bubble aeration systems. Performance data collected showed very promising results in terms of five-day biochemical oxygen demand （BOD5）, ammonia （NH3） and total suspended solids （TSS） removal. Two-year average ammonia effluents were 4.1 mg. L-1 for Columbia WWTP, 4 mg. L-1 for Larchmont WWTP and 2.1 mg. L-1 for Laurelville WWTE respectively. Two- year average BOD5 effluents were 6.8, 4.9 and 2.7 ***, and TSS effluents were 15.0, 9.6 and 7.5 mg.L-L The systems also showed low fecal coliform （FC） levels in their effluents.
