Modulation properties of solitary and optically injected phased-array semiconductor lasers

We study modulation properties of two-element phased-array semiconductor lasers that can be described by coupled mode theory. We consider four different waveguide structures and modulate the array either in phase or out of phase within the phase-locked regions, guided by stability diagrams obtained from direct numerical simulations. Specifically, we find that out-of-phase modulation allows for bandwidth enhancement if the waveguide structure is properly chosen; for example, for a combination of index antiguiding and gain-guiding, the achievable modulation bandwidth in the case of out-of-phase modulation could be much higher than the one when they are modulated in phase. Proper array design of the coupling, controllable in terms of the laser separation and the frequency offset between the two lasers, is shown to be beneficial to slightly improve the bandwidth but not the resonance frequency, while the inclusion of the frequency offset leads to the appearance of double peak response curves. For comparison, we explore the case of modulating only one element of the phased array and find that double peak response curves are found. To improve the resonance frequency and the modulation bandwidth, we introduce simultaneous external injection into the phased array and modulate the phased array or its master light within the injection locking region. We observe a significant improvement of the modulation properties, and in some cases, by modulating the amplitude of the master light before injection,the resulting 3 dB bandwidths could be enhanced up to 160 GHz. Such a record bandwidth for phased-array modulation could pave the way for various applications, notably optical communications that require high-speed integrated photonic devices.

MYB34, MYB51, and MYB 122 distinctly Regulate indolic Glucosinolate Biosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana

The MYB34, MYB51, and MYB122 transcription factors are known to regulate indolic glucosinolate （iG） biosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana. To determine the distinct regulatory potential of MYB34, MYB51, and MYB122, the accumulation of iGs in different parts of plants and upon treatment with plant hormones were analyzed in A. thaliana seedlings. it was shown that MYB34, MYB51, and MYB122 act together to control the biosynthesis of 13M in shoots and roots, with MYB34 controlling biosynthesis of iGs mainly in the roots, MYB51 regulating biosynthesis in shoots, and MYB122 having an accessory role in the biosynthesis of iGs. Analysis of glucosinolate levels in seedlings of myb34, myb51, myb122, myb34 myb51 double, and myb34 myb51 myb122 triple knockout mutants grown in the presence of abscisic acid （ABA）, salicylic acid （SA）, jasmonate （JA）, or ethylene （ET） revealed that：（1） MYB51 is the central regulator of iG synthesis upon SA and ET signaling, （2） MYB34 is the key regulator upon ABA and JA signaling, and （3） MYB122 plays only a minor role in JA/ET-induced glucosinolate biosynthesis. The myb34 myb51 myb122 triple mutant is devoid of iGs, indicating that these three MYB factors are indispensable for iG production under standard growth conditions.

Chemically induced and Light-independent Cryptochrome Photoreceptor Activation

The cryptochrome photoreceptors of higher plants are dimeric proteins. Their N-terminal photosensory domain mediates dimerization, and the unique C-terminal extension （CCT） mediates signaling. We made use of the human FK506binding protein （FKBP） that binds with high affinity to rapamycin or rapamycin analogs （rapalogs）. The FKBP-rapamycin complex is recognized by another protein, FRB, thus allowing rapamycin-induced dimerization of two target proteins. Here we demonstrate by bioluminescence resonance energy transfer （BRET） assays the applicability of this regulated dimer- ization system to plants. Furthermore, we show that fusion proteins consisting of the C-terminal domain of Arabidopsis cryptochrome 2 fused to FKBP and FRB and coexpressed in Arabidopsis cells specifically induce the expression of cryptochrome-controlled reporter and endogenous genes in darkness upon incubation with the rapalog. These results demonstrate that the activation of cryptochrome signal transduction can be chemically induced in a dose-dependent fashion and uncoupled from the light signal, and provide the groundwork for gain-of-function experiments to study specifically the role of photoreceptors in darkness or in signaling cross-talk even under light conditions that activate members of all photoreceptor families.

More than five years ago,the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection was revolutionized with the introduction of all-oral direct-acting antiviral(dAA)*** proved highly efficient in curing patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC),including patients with *** new dAA treatments were alleged to induce significant improvements in clinical outcome and prognosis,but the exact cause of the expected benefit was ***,little was known about how the underlying liver disease would be affected during and after viral *** this review,we describe and discuss the liver-related effects of the new treatments in regards to both pathophysiological aspects,such as macrophage activation,and the time-dependent effects of therapy,with specific emphasis on inflammation,structural liver changes,and liver function,as these factors are all related to morbidity and mortality in CHC *** seems clear that antiviral therapy,especially the achievement of a sustained virologic response has several beneficial effects on liver-related parameters in CHC patients with advanced liver fibrosis or *** seems to be a timedependent effect of dAA therapy with viral clearance and the resolution of liver inflammation followed by more discrete changes in structural liver *** improvements lead to favorable effects on liver function,followed by an improvement in cognitive dysfunction and portal ***,the data provide knowledge on the several beneficial effects of dAA therapy on liverrelated parameters in CHC patients suggesting short-and long-term improvements in the underlying disease with the promise of an improved longterm prognosis.

Approximation Algorithms for 3d Orthogonal Knapsack

We study non-overlapping axis-parallel packings of 3d boxes with profits into a dedicated bigger box where rotation is either forbidden or permitted, and we wish to maximize the total profit. Since this optimization problem is NP-hard, we focus on approximation algorithms. We obtain fast and simple algorithms for the non-rotational scenario with approximation ratios 9 ＋ ε and 8 ＋ ε, as well as an algorithm with approximation ratio 7 ＋ ε that uses more sophisticated techniques; these are the smallest approximation ratios known for this problem. Furthermore, we show how the used techniques can be adapted to the case where rotation by 90° either around the z-axis or around all axes is permitted, where we obtain algorithms with approximation ratios 6 ＋ ε and 5 ＋ ε, respectively. Finally our methods yield a 3d generalization of a packability criterion and a strip packing algorithm with absolute approximation ratio 29/4, improving the previously best known result of 45/4.

Complications of newborn enterostomies

AiM To evaluate the occurrence and severity of enterostomy complications in newborns suffering from different intestinal *** A 10-year retrospective cohort study(2008-2017) investigated newborns that underwent enterostomy formation and reversal for different intestinal disorders. Only infants less than 28 d old at the time of enterostomy creation were included in the study(corrected age was applied in the cases of preterm neonates). The patients were divided into two groups according to their underlying diseases. Group 1 included infants suffering from necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC), whereas Group 2 included newborns diagnosed with intestinal disorders other than NEC, such as meconium obstruction, anorectal malformation, focal intestinal perforation, ileus, intestinal atresia and volvulus. The primary outcome measure was enterostomy-related morbidity. The data were analyzed statistically using Pearson's χ2 test or Fisher's exact test for categorical variables and the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U-Test for continuous variables. RESULTS in total, 76 infants met the inclusion criteria and were evaluated for enterostomy-related complications. Neither group showed significant differences regarding gender, gestational age, weight at birth or weight at enterostomy formation. infants suffering from NEC(Group 1) were significantly older at enterostomy for-mation than the neonates of Group 2 [median(range), 11(2-75) d vs 4(1-101) d, P = 0.004)]. Significantly more ileostomies were created in Group 1 [47(92.2%) vs 16(64.0%), P = 0.007], whereas colostomies were performed significantly more often in Group 2 [2(3.9%) vs 8(32.0%), P = 0.002]. The initiation of enteral nutrition after enterostomy was significantly later in Group 1 infants than in Group 2 infants [median(range), 5(3-13) vs 3(1-9), P ications in patients of both groups after enterostomy formation was 80.3%, with rates of 86.3% in Group 1 and 68.0% in Group 2(P =
