Polyethylene glycol fusion repair of severed sciatic nerves accelerates recovery of nociceptive sensory perceptions in male and female rats of different strains

Successful polyethylene glycol fusion(PEG-fusion)of severed axons following peripheral nerve injuries for PEG-fused axons has been reported to:(1)rapidly restore electrophysiological continuity;(2)prevent distal Wallerian Degeneration and maintain their myelin sheaths;(3)promote primarily motor,voluntary behavioral recoveries as assessed by the Sciatic Functional index;and,(4)rapidly produce correct and incorrect connections in many possible combinations that produce rapid and extensive recovery of functional peripheral nervous system/central nervous system connections and reflex(e.g.,toe twitch)or voluntary *** preceding companion paper describes sensory terminal field reo rganization following PEG-fusion repair of sciatic nerve transections or ablations;howeve r,sensory behavioral recovery has not been explicitly explored following PEG-fusion *** the current study,we confirmed the success of PEG-fusion surgeries according to criteria(1-3)above and more extensively investigated whether PEG-fusion enhanced mechanical nociceptive recovery following sciatic transection in male and female outbred Sprague-Dawley and inbred Lewis *** nociceptive responses were assessed by measuring withdrawal thresholds using von Frey filaments on the dorsal and midplantar regions of the *** von Frey filament tests were a more reliable method than plantar von Frey filament tests to assess mechanical nociceptive sensitivity following sciatic nerve *** withdrawal thresholds of the sciatic-mediated lateral dorsal region differed significantly across strain but not *** thresholds did not change significantly from baseline in chronic Unoperated and Sham-operated *** sciatic transection,all rats exhibited severe hyposensitivity to stimuli at the lateral dorsal region of the hindpaw ipsilateral to the ***,PEG-fused rats exhibited significantly earlier return to baseline withdrawal thresholds than Negative

Modeling the effect of traffic regimes on safety of urban arterials： The case study of Athens

This study aims to divide traffic into meaningful clusters （regimes） and to investigate their impact on accident likelihood and accident severity. Furthermore, the likelihood of pow- ered-two-wheelers （PTWs） involvement in an accident is examined. To achieve the aims of the study, traffic and accident data during the period 2006-2011 from two major arterials in Athens were collected and processed. Firstly, a finite mixture cluster analysis was imple- mented to classify traffic into clusters. Afterwards, discriminant analysis was carried out in order to correctly assign new cases to the existing regimes by using a training and a testing set. Lastly, Bayesian logistic regression models were developed to investigate the impact of traffic regimes on accident likelihood and severity. The findings of this study suggest that urban traffic can be divided into different regimes by using average traffic occupancy and its standard deviation, measured by nearby upstream and downstream loop detectors. The results revealed potential hazardous traffic conditions, which are discussed in the paper. in general, high occupancy values increase accident likelihood, but tend to lead slight acci- dents, while PTWs are more likely to be involved in an accident, when traffic occupancy is high. Transitions from high to low occupancy also increase accident likelihood.

Effects of interlayer spacing and applied pressure on the lanthanide transport in MoS_(2)-based two-dimensional channels

Rare-earth elements(REEs)are critical to modern industry but difficult to separate due to their subtle and monotonic changes in physico-chemical ***2-based two-dimensional(2D)materials offer novel opportunities for enhancing REE separation,exhibiting a distinct volcano-shaped transport performance distribution that peaks at Sm3+.However,the specific contributions of thermodynamic and kinetic factors to ion transport within 2D confinement remain *** this study,we conducted a series of non-equilibrium all-atom molecular dynamics(MD)simulations to explore the effects of interlayer spacing and external pressure on the transport of lanthanide ions inÅ-scale acetate functionalized 2D MoS2(MoS2-cOOH)*** examined ion entry and permeation rates,water flux,dehydration,and binding *** simulation results reveal that the transport trends of lanthanide ions are jointly driven by the dehydration degree and the relative-binding strengths of ions to water and to the acetate within the 2D ***,the dehydration pattern of lanthanide ions during permeation is closely linked to kinetic ***,this study provides a detailed atomistic understanding of the mechanisms under-lying lanthanide ion transport under *** findings point to the significant potential for tuning confinement and chemical functionalization withinÅ-scale channels for more efficient REE separation.

Male courtship signal modality and female mate preference in the wolf spider Schizocosa ocreata: results of digital multimodal playback studies

Experimental study of hollow rectangular bridge column performance under vertical and cyclically bilateral loads

To investigate the seismic performance of hollow reinforced concrete （Rc） bridge columns of rectangular cross section under constant axial load and cyclically biaxial bending, five specimens were tested. A parametric study is carried out for different axial load ratios, longitudinal reinforcement ratios and lateral reinforcement ratios. The experimental results showed that all tested specimens failed in the flexural failure mode and their ultimate performance was dominated by flexural capacity, which is represented by the rupture/buckling of tensile longitudinal rebars at the bottom of the bridge columns. Biaxial force and displacement hysteresis loops showed significant stiffness and strength degradations, and the pinching effect and coupling interaction effect of both directions severely decrease the structural seismic resistance. However, the measured ductility coefficient varying from 3.5 to 5.7 and the equivalent viscous damping ratio varying from 0.19 and 0.26 can meet the requirements of the seismic design. The hollow Rc rectangular bridge columns with configurations of lateral reinforcement in this study have excellent performance under bidirectional earthquake excitations, and may be considered as a substitute for current hollow Rc rectangular section configurations described in the Guideline for Seismic Design of Highway Bridges （JTG/T B02-01-2008）. The length of the plastic hinge region was found to approach one sixth of the hollow Rc rectangular bridge column height for all specimen columns, and it was much less than those specified in the current JTG/T. Thus, the length of the plastic hinge region is more concentrated for Rc rectangular hollow bridge columns.

Developing Skin Analogues for a Robotic Octopus

in order to fabricate a biomimetic skin for an octopus inspired robot, a new process was developed based on mechanical properties measured from real octopus skin. Various knitted nylon textiles were tested and the one of 10-denier nylon was chosen as reinforcement. A combination of Ecoflex 0030 and 0010 silicone rubbers was used as matrix of the composite to obtain the right stiffness for the skin-analogue system. The open mould fabrication process developed allows air bubble to escape easily and the artificial skin produced was thin and waterproof. Material properties of the biomimetic skin were char- acterised using static tensile and instrumented scissors cutting tests. The Young＇s moduli of the artificial skin are 0.08 MPa and 0.13 MPa in the longitudinal and transverse directions, which are much lower than those of the octopus skin. The strength and fracture toughness of the artificial skin, on the other hand are higher than those of real octopus skins. conically-shaped skin prototypes to be used to cover the robotic arm unit were manufactured and tested. The biomimetic skin prototype was stiff enough to maintain it conical shape when filled with water. The driving force for elongation was reduced significantly compared with previous prototypes.

in order to develop skin artefact for an octopus-inspired robot arm, which is designed to be able to elongate 60% of its original length, silicone nlbber and knitted nylon sheet were selected to manufacture an artificial skin, due to their higher elastic strain and high flexibility. Tensile and scissors cutting tests were conducted to characterise the matrix and reinforcing materials and the skin artefact. Material properties of the individual and the composite materials were compared with the measured properties of real octopus skin presented ill Part i. The Young＇s modulus of the skin should be below 20 MPa and the elastic strain range should be over 60%. The fracture toughness should be at least 0.9 kJ.m 2. Tubes made of the skin artefact filled with liquid were tested to study volume change under deformation. Finite element analysis model was developed to simulate the material and arm structure under tensile loading. Results show that the skin artefact developed has similar mechanical properties as the real octopus skin and satisfies all the design specifications of the OcTOPUS robot.

Octopus skin samples were tested under quasi-static and scissor cutting conditions to measure the in-plane material prop- erties and fracture toughness. Samples from all eight arms of one octopus were tested statically to investigate how properties vary from arm to arm. Another nine octopus skins were measured to study the influence of body mass on skin properties. in- fluence of specimen location on skin mechanical properties was also studied. Material properties of skin, i.e. the Young＇s modulus, ultimate stress, failure strain and fracture toughness have been plotted against the position of skin along the length of arm or body. Statistical studies were carried out to help analyzing experimental data obtained. Results of this work will be used as guidelines for the design and development of artificial skins for an octopus-inspired robot.

AiM:The pathogenesis of delayed gastric emptying in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia(NUD)remains unclear. We aimed to examine whether gastric emptying rate in NUD patients was associated with Helicobacter pylori(Hpylori) infection and whether it was affected by eradication of the infection. METHODS:Gastric emptying rate of a mixed solid-liquid meal was assessed by the paracetamol absorption method in NUD patients and asymptomatic controls(n=17).Hpylori status was assessed by serology and biopsy urease test. H pylori-positive NUD patients(n=23)received 10-day triple eradication *** was re-assessed by biopsy urease test four weeks later,and if eradication was confirmed,gastric emptying rate was re-evaluated. RESULTS:Thirty-three NUD patients and 17 controls were *** patients had significantly delayed gastric emptying compared with *** mean maximum plasma paracetamol concentration divided by body mass (cmax/BM)was 0.173 and 0.224 mg/*** respectively (P=0.02),the mean area under plasma paracetamol concentration-time curve divided by body mass(AUc/BM) was 18.42 and 24.39 ***/*** respectively(P=0.01). Gastric emptying rate did not differ significantly between H pylori-positive and H pylori-negative NUD *** mean cmax/BM was 0.172 and 0.177 mg/L·kg respectively (P=0.58),the mean AUc/BM was 18.43 and 18.38 mg·min/ L·kg respectively(P=0.91).Among 14 NUD patients who were initially H pylori-positive,confirmed eradication of the infection did not significantly alter gastric emptying rate. The mean cmax/BM was 0.171 and 0.160 mg/*** before and after Hp eradication,respectively(P=0.64),the mean AUc/BM was 17.41 and 18.02 ***/*** before and after eradication,respectively(P=0.93). cONcLUSiON:Although gastric emptying is delayed in NUD patients compared with controls,gastric emptying rate is not associated with H pylori status nor it is affected by eradication of the infection.
