Boro-germanate glasses containing copper, i.e., xCuO(1-x)[GeO2·B2O3] subjected to gamma irradiation, were studied by means of EPR. Comparisons were made with the xCuO·(1-x)[Na2B4O7] system. irradiation induced centers were detected. These are: electron trapped at a hydrogen compensated germanium ion centers; boron oxygen hole centers and electron trapped at an oxygen vacancy centers. Strong dependence of the paramagnetic irradiation-induced centers concentration on the CuO content of the sample was evidenced.

iron ions were used as probes to explore the structural and magnetic properties of 70TeO2'25B2O3' 5SrF2 vitreous matrix. The distribution of Fe3+ ions on different structural aggregates was revealed by means of EPR, as depending on Fe2O3 concentration. Strongly distorted octahedral sites were detected for the isolated paramagnetic ions, and also clusters of Fe ions especially at high Fe2O3 content of samples. Magnetic susceptibility measurements evidenced both dipoledipole and superexchange type interactions involving iron ions. Mixed valence states of iron ions were also detected

The xMnO(100-x)[***] glasses were prepared with MnO concentration being in the range of 0≤x≤50 mole fraction and were investigated by EPR spectroscopy and magneticsusceptibility measurements. Octahedral symmetric sites tetragonally distorted were detected for x≤5 mole fraction MnO. Only Mn2+ ions were identified in these glasses, involved in dipoledipole interactions

By using EPR and magnetic susceptibility measurements, the Cr ion distribution in the xCr2O3.(1-x)[70TeO2·25B2O3·5PbO] glasses with 0＜x≤20 mol% was studied. EPR investigation evidencedthe presence of Cr3+ ions in agreement with the experimentally obtained atomic magnetic moment values. For concentrations x≤3 mol%, the isolated Cr3+ ions coexist with those coupledby dipole-dipole interactions. For x＞3 mol%, the Cr3+ ions participate in superexchange interactions and are predominantly antiferromagnetically coupled.

Glasses of xFe2O3 (l-x) Na2B4O7 for 0.3≤x≤5 mol% have been studied by means of EPR. The distribution of Fe3+ ions in the vitreous network. as isolated and connected in clusters. depends on the impurity contents in the glass. A thermal treatment inducing the Fe3+ -rich phase separation ends at the sample crystallization, when performed at about 550℃, Weathering of glasses causes a Superficial alteration of their optical properties. it enters the bulk of the glass for powdered samples. As a result of gamma irradiation pararnagnetic hole centers were detected:the BOHC. the peroxy radical and the iron hole centers

The peripheral blood is a major source of hematopoietic stem cells. Almost for two decades the peripheral blood has been mobilized, in order to enhance the CD34+ concentration. The isolated stem cells from the mobilized peripheral blood are used as an alternative, or in addition to bone marrow derived stem cells. in this paper, a new perspective is being discussed;the use of non-mobilized peripheral blood as an alternative source for hematopoietic progenitor cells. The number of isolated hematopoietic stem cells is evaluated using flow cytometry. The viability can be evaluated using the trypan blue exclusion test, the flow cytometry or automated assays. The isolated hematopoietic stem cells could be used for ex vivo expansion either in static systems or in proper bioreactor systems, prior to cryopreservation and/or transplantation.

The small bowel represents one of the main sites for cutaneous melanoma metastasis;however, numerous cases of primary intestinal melanoma have recently been described. in view of this, we present the case of a 39-year-old woman admitted for nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, change in bowel habits and weight loss. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a small bowel mass. Surgical resection of a 6 cm ileal tumour with regional mesenteric lymphadenectomy and end-to-end anastomosis was performed. Histopathological findings indicated the presence of an ileal melanoma metastasis. Subsequent dermatological examination identified a cutaneous lesion on the right forearm, however no malignant cells were found at the histopathological exam. Whole body PET CT with FDG identified multiple frontal and parietal lesions. Genetic testing was positive for BRAF gene V600 E mutation. The patient underwent multiple neurosurgical procedures for the resection of cerebral metastases. Palliative external radiation and chemotherapy was also attempted. After approximately 2 years after the diagnosis, the patient died following multiple episodes of intracranial hypertension.
