The catalyti. conversi.n of pyrolysi. oi.s over aci. soli.s has been i.vesti.ated.i. numerous papers. Thi. work presents some preli.i.ary results d.scri.i.g the potenti.l of alkali.e mi.erals i. the thermal d.grad.ti.n of bi.mass. Pi.e wood.and.oi.s d.ri.ed.from the thermal d.grad.ti.n of thi. bi.mass were i.i.i.lly characteri.ed.for thei. chemi.al, thermal and.fuel properti.s. Four natural mi.erals known for thei. alkali.e character and.thei. catalyti. acti.i.y i. the cracki.g of tars were selected.for thi. i.vesti.ati.n i.clud.0}g: li.estone, d.lomi.e, hyd.otalci.e and.oli.i.e. Si.i.a sand. known for i.s i.ert behavi.ur, and.three aci. soli.s（HY and.Beta zeoli.es and.Al-McM-41） known for thei. catalyti. acti.i.y i. the cracki.g of petroleum fracti.ns and.d.oxygenati.g capaci.y, were tested.i. parallel for comparati.e purposes. The i.teracti.n of these materi.ls wi.h pyrolysi. oi.s at low temperatures was i.vesti.ated.usi.g thermogravi.etri. analysi.（TGA）. The results evi.enced.that alkali.e mi.erals promoted.polymeri.ati.n reacti.ns i. the pyrolysi. oi.s（ad.i.i.n, esteri.i.ati.n and.etheri.i.ati.n） at temperatures above 175oc wi.h d.lomi.e showi.g the hi.hest catalyti. acti.i.y. i. contrast, the presence of aci. catalysts d.0} not have any notable effect i. thi. aspect. Preli.i.ary results obtai.ed.usi.g Pyrolysi.-Gas chromatography/Mass Spectrometry（Py-Gc/MS） evi.enced.the catalyti. acti.i.y of alkali.e mi.erals i. the cracki.g and.d.oxygenati.n of pyrolysi. vapours. Although thi. acti.i.y was not as effecti.e as wi.h syntheti. aci. catalysts, thi. i. li.ely to be compensated.by the lower market price of the former.
