Typhoi. fever remai.s endemi. i. most developi.g countri.s wi.h large scale transmi.si.n through contami.ated food and dri.ki.g water. Si.ce 2000s, ani.al and thei. products have been found to be a common food source for Typhoi.al i.fecti.ns. A total of 90 blood speci.ens, 45 samples each were collected from abattoi. and non-abattoi. workers i. Akwa i.om State and were screened for Salmonella speci.s usi.g standard cultural and serologi.al techni.ues. The overall prevalence rate was 12 (13.3%). Salmonella speci.s were di.tri.uted i. all the three senatori.l di.tri.ts of the State. Percentage di.tri.uti.n of Salmonella i.olates was 3 (3.3%) for Uyo, 4 (4.4%) for Eket and 5 (5.6%) were i.olated from i.ot Ekpene di.tri.ts. Out of 90 human subjects screened, 12 (13.3%) were posi.i.e and 5 (5.6%) were i.olated from non-abattoi. whi.e 7 (7.7%) were i.olated from abattoi. workers. i. thi. study, serologi.al si.ni.i.ant ti.re of ≥160 of Typhoi. fever cases was confi.med by blood culture. Accordi.g to sero-groupi.g and source of sample collecti.n 4.4% S. typhi.was i.olated from abattoi. workers followed by S. paratyphi.A (3.3%) whi.e S. typhi.uri.m and S. galli.arum (2.2%) and S. enteri.i.i. (1.1%). i.crease prevalence of Salmonella serovars such as S. galli.ari.m, S. typhi. S. Typhi.uri.m and S. enteri.i.i. wi.h regular consumpti.n of slaughter meat and other product wi.hout proper di.i.fecti.n and appropri.te boi.i.g, represent a seri.us publi. health ri.k i. Akwa i.om State. Demographi. data obtai.ed i. thi. study showed that majori.y of the abattoi. workers across the three di.tri.ts were wi.hi. the ages of 21 to 30 (33%), 39% were none graduate whi.e 30.4% were secondary school leavers. Fever was recorded as the hi.hest cli.i.al si.ns and symptoms followed by headache, abdomi.al cramps, di.rrhoea and vomi.i.g. Background: Rubella i. an i.fecti.us di.ease of publi. health i.portance because i.fecti.n ac-qui.ed duri.g early pregnancy often results i. foetal abnormali.i.s that are classi.i.d as con-geni.al rubella syndrome (CRS). The burden of rubella i.fecti.n i. most developi.g countri.s i. however not well documented because of li.-i.ed epi.emi.logi.al data. Methods: Between 2006 and 2009, 781i.di.i.uals wi.h febri.e rash i.lness seen i. cli.i.s i. Akwa i.om State were screened for rubella speci.i. i.M anti.odi.s usi.g the ELi.A techni.ue. Stati.ti.al analysi. was done usi.g Graph pri.e versi.n 5.3 stati.-ti.al package at 95% confi.ence i.terval. The level of si.ni.i.ance was establi.hed at P = 0.05 usi.g Fi.her’s exact two-tai.ed values. Results: Of 781 i.di.i.uals screened for rubella speci.i. i.M anti.odi.s, 94 (12%) were found to be posi.ti.e. i.ci.ence of 8.7% recorded i. 2006 gradu-ally rose to 9.3% i. 2007, 11.6% i. 2008 and 14.3% i. 2009. Those i. the reproducti.e age group (> 16 years) were most affected (51.7%). However, thi. was not stati.ti.ally si.ni.i.ant (P = 0.228). Females (17.4%) were more suscepti.ble than males (6.2%) (P i.le than urban dwellers (10.5%) (P = 0.416). Conclusi.n: The study shows that the i.ci.ence of rubella i. Akwa i.om State, Ni.eri. i. hi.h. The lowest i.ci.ence was however found among i.di.i.u-als below the reproducti.e age. The acti.i.y concentrati.ns of radi.nucli.es, absorbed dose rate, excess li.eti.e cancer ri.k, and soi.-to-plant transfer factor have been evaluated i. soi. and crop samples from Jali.go and Wukari.Local Government Area of Taraba State, Ni.eri.. The acti.i.y concentrati.ns were determi.ed wi.h the ai. of Hi.h Puri.y Germani.m detector. The absorbed dose and excess li.eti.e cancer ri.k were evaluated and forecasted for 60 years usi.g the ResRad off-si.e model. The average acti.i.y concentrati.n of 40K, 232Th, and 238U i. the soi. samples were 633.13, 141.15, and 71.20 Bq·kg-1 respecti.ely, for the Jali.go study area, and whi.e that of the Wukari.study area was;199.21, 87.23, and 25.37 Bq·kg-1 respecti.ely. The average soi.-to-plant transfer factors for 40K, 232Th, and 238U were 0.51, 0.10, and 0.27 respecti.ely for the Jali.go study area whi.e that of Wukari.are 0.40, 0.57, and 0.74 respecti.ely. The mean annual effecti.e dose equi.alent for the study area i. hi.her than the world average of 0.07 mS·vy-1. The excess li.eti.e cancer ri.k for the study areas has values that are hi.her than the safety li.i.. The ResRed model showed that di.ect radi.ti.n from the crops i. the major contri.utor to excess cancer ri.k among other pathways. The radi.logi.al hazard i.di.es reveal health ri.ks to farmers, especi.lly i. the Jali.go area.

Thi. study assumes that on flood days the movement of customers and sellers tends to be hi.dered, thus resulti.g i. the retardati.n of transacti.ns and the reducti.n of dai.y i.come earned. The study compared the si.uati.n of female traders wi.h that of male traders. Both pri.ary and secondary data were used i. thi. study. Pri.ary data were collected usi.g an open-ended questi.nnai.e. A total of 83 questi.nnai.es were randomly di.tri.uted to members of four communi.i.s, whi.h were selected through strati.i.d random sampli.g procedures. Background: Chroni. ki.ney di.ease (CKD) i. usually progressi.e, often resulti.g i. end-stage renal di.ease (ESRD). The two most common causes of renal di.ease, hypertensi.n and di.betes melli.us contri.ute greatly to the mobi.i.y and mortali.y associ.ted wi.h CKD. i. has been found that loweri.g BP i. effecti.e i. reduci.g cardi.vascular events i. pati.nt wi.h a moderate reducti.n i. GFR and i. those wi.h ESRD on di.lysi.. The ai. of thi. study was to assess blood pressure control among adult Afri.an CKD pati.nts. Method: The case notes of chroni. ki.ney pati.nts who assess care i. the renal uni. of our Teachi.g Hospi.al were retri.ved for the study after obtai.i.g i.formed consent from the ethi.al uni. of the hospi.al. To be eli.i.le for the study, the pati.nt, must have been attendi.g the renal cli.i. and on anti.hypertensi.es for a mi.i.um peri.d of 6 months. Results: Ei.hty-seven CKD pati.nts (46 males and 41 females) wi.h a mean age of 50.9 ± 13.3 years. The proporti.n of pati.nts who achi.ved blood pressure control was 13.79% (95% Ci.7.34% - 22.85%). Among the pre-di.lysi. pati.nts, BP control was achi.ved i. 13.64% compared to 14.29% among the pati.nts on di.lysi.. Ni.eteen (21.84%) of the pati.nts were on one blood pressure loweri.g agent;26 (29.89%) on two;33 (37.93%) on three;7 (8.05%) on four and 2 (2.30%) on fi.e. Conclusi.n: Blood pressure control among Afri.an adult CKD pati.nts i. di.fi.ult wi.h many of them requi.i.g more than two anti.ypertensi.e drugs.

An experi.ent was conducted to determi.e the i.fluence of ai.-borne parti.ulates exuded from gas flare chambers and rai.fall/rai. water pH i. the rusti.g of metalli. bui.di.g materi.ls, parti.ularly the galvani.ed i.on roofi.g sheets, i. the Ni.er Delta Regi.n of Ni.eri.. Gas flari.g and rai. fall i. thi. regi.n are rated to be amongst the hi.hest i. the world. i. thi. experi.ent, speci.ens of the metal (galvani.ed i.on) were exposed i. the atmosphere for one year, across four si.es wi.hi. the regi.n. The monthly readi.gs of concentrati.ns of parti.ulate matter (aerosol) and rai.fall at the si.es were recorded. Equally, the average pH values of the collected rai.water were determi.ed and recorded correspondi.gly. Multi.le li.ear regressi.n, analysi. of vari.nce (ANOVA) and Pearson Product Moment Correlati.n stati.ti.al analyses were performed on the obtai.ed data and the outcome i.di.ated that, wi.h an R2 = 0.678, there was si.ni.i.ant i.fluence of i.dustri.l aerosol concentrati.n, preci.i.ati.n and pH on the degradati.n of galvani.ed i.on roofi.g materi.l i. the regi.n. i. was also establi.hed that thei. i.di.i.ual i.fluences were less than thei. joi.t i.pact, suggesti.g synergi.m. The ANOVA test further i.di.ated that corrosi.n was severe i. the i.dustri.l si.es of i.eno and Ebocha whi.e Ekuri.(the control stati.n) recorded the least i.pact. Thi. study recommends a di.conti.uati.n of gas flari.g i. the regi.n whi.e research on envi.onmentally resi.i.nt, relati.ely cheap and sustai.able alternati.e materi.ls should be encouraged.
