Efficacy and safety of tadalafil taken as needed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in Asian men： results of an integrated analysis

We evaluated the efficacy and safety of as-needed tadalafil in a diverse clinical population （with varying patient demographics, disease severity, and comorbid medical conditions） of Asian men with erectile dysfunction （ED）. An integrated analysis of five double-blind, placebo-controlled trials （N = 1 046） was performed. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 10 mg tadalafil （N = 185）, 20 mg tadalafil （N = 510）, or placebo （N = 351）. Efficacy assessments included the International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF）, Sexual Encounter Profile （SEP） diary and Global Assessment Question （GAQ）. Patients receiving 10 mg or 20 mg tadalafil showed significant improvement from baseline-to-end point on the Erectile Function domain of the International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF-EF） domain score in all clinical sub-populations analyzed, compared with patients receiving placebo （P 〈 0.001）. The 10-mg and 20-mg tadalafil groups showed a mean success rate of 64.1% and 70.5% for sexual intercourse attempts （SEP3, successful intercourse）, respectively, compared with 33.4% in the placebo group （P 〈 0.001）, and 85.5% and 85.4% reported improved erections at end point GAQ, respectively, versus 43.5% in the placebo group （P 〈 0.001）. Tadalafil was well tolerated across all groups studied. Headache and back pain were the most frequently reported adverse events. Overall, tadalafil was effective and well tolerated across a diverse clinical spectrum of Asian men with ED.

Plasma transforming growth factor-β_1 levels in patients with erectile dysfunction

Aim: To evaluate the plasma TGF-β1 level in erectile dysfunction (ED) patients of various causes. Methods: Sixty-two patients with ED and 26 potent men were subjected to the study. Based on multidisciplinary work-ups, including medical history, physical examinations, blood tests with lipid profile and hormones, penile duplex Doppler ultrasonogram and neurophysiological tests, causes for ED were classified as psychogenic (n=15), neurogenic (n=16) and vasculogenic (n=31). The plasma TGF-β1 level was measured by the ELISA method. Results: The plasma TGF-β1 level was significantly increased in the ED group (6.7 ± 4.9 ng/mL), compared to the control (4.0±2.1 ng/mL) (P king (7.5 ± 4.7 ng/mL) and dyslipidemia groups (7.4 ± 4.4 ng/mL) showed significantly increased plasma TGF-β1 levels, compared to the non-smokers (5.5 ± 2.8 ng/mL), and those without dyslipidemia (4.8 ?2.8 ng/mL) (P<0.05). Conclusion: Vascular risk factors are associated with an elevated plasma TGF-β1 level, which may contribute to cavernous fibrosis and ED.

Aim： To evaluate the efficacy and safety of SK3530, a newly developed type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitor （PDE5I）, in Korean men with erectile dysfunction （ED）. Methods： A total of 119 patients were randomized at 10 centers in Korea to receive either SK3530 （50, 100, or 150 mg; n = 89） or placebo （n = 30） taken 1 h before anticipated sexual activity for an 8-week period. The patients were evaluated at baseline and 4 and 8 weeks after beginning therapy. Efficacy was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF）, Sexual Encounter Profile （SEP）, and the Global Assessment Question （GAQ）. Safety was analyzed by adverse events, laboratory values and vital signs. Results： At the end of the study, all the primary and secondary efficacy end-points were statistically significantly improved by SK3530 compared with placebo （P 〈 0.05）. Of the 89 patients in the treatment arm, 36 （42.3 %） achieved normal erectile function after treatment, including six patients with severe ED. Treatment-related adverse events occurred in 32 patients. The most common adverse events were flushing, headache, dizziness and eye redness （10.9%, 7.6%, 2.5% and 2.5%, respectively）, and most were mild. Only two patients discontinued treatment during the study period because of adverse events. Conclusion： The results of our phase Ⅱ study have confirmed the efficacy and safety of SK3530 in a broad population of men with ED of various etiologies and severity. The optimal doses in terms of efficacy and safety were determined to be 50 mg and 100 mg, respectively.

Na superionic conductor (NASICON)-type Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) has been regarded as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, NVP suffers from poor cyclability and rate capability because of its intrinsically low electronic conductivity. Herein, we successfully syn thesized N-doped carb on-wrapped Na3V2(PO4)3 (NC@NVP) through the carb on izati on of polydopami ne, which is rich in nitrogen species. The strong adhesion properties of the polydopamine lead to effective and homogeneous wrapping of NVP particles, and it I is further turned into a con ductive N-doped carb on n etwork itself, providi ng facile diffusi on of electr ons and Na+ i ons duri ng battery operation. NC@NVP displays remarkable electrochemical performanee, even under harsh operating conditions, such as a high rate capability (discharge capacity of 70.88, 49.21 mA·h·g^-1 at 50 and 100 C), long-term cycling stability (capacity retention of 94.77% over 1,000 cycles at 20 C), and high-temperature cycling (capacity retention of 92.0% after 500 cycles at 60 ℃).

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties According to Nb Content of High Strength Steel Manufactured in VIM

As the aircraft and aerospace industry and the automobile industry are developed, the demand of reliable materials with high strength and high toughness is steadily increased. The grain miniature method which improves the ductility and the toughness simultaneously under high strength is the miniature of the casting microstructure. In this paper, the Nb which affects the austenite grain miniature is added by 0.00%, 0.03% and 0.06% in this steel and the ingot is manufactured in a vacuum induction melting furnace （VIM）. The casting microstructure and the mechanical property of the maraging steel according to Nb contents are analyzed by conducting the solution annealing and the age hardening after hot rolling. In this result, a specimen containing 0.03% Nb is most miniature. When it does the long time age hardening, the precipitation estimated as the carbide is appeared. The mechanical properties are excellent if a specimen containing 0.06% Nb does the age hardening during 8 h in 482℃.

Prediction of nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin combination chemotherapy in gastric cancer patients

AIM:To evaluate the treatment options for nephrotoxicity due to cisplatin combination ***:We retrospectively reviewed patients who had received cisplatin combination chemotherapy for gastric cancer between January 2002 and December *** investigated patients who had shown acute renal failure(ARF),and examined their clinical characteristics,laboratory data,use of preventive measures,treatment cycles,the amount of cisplatin administered,recovery period,subsequent treatments,and renal status between the recovered and unrecovered ***:Forty-one of the 552 patients had serum creatinine(SCR)levels greater than 1.5 mg/*** found that pre-ARF SCR,ARF SCR,and ARF glomerular filtration rates were significantly associated with renal status postARF between the two groups(P=0.008,0.026,0.026,respectively).On the receiver operating characteristic curve of these values,a 1.75 mg/dL ARF SCR value had 87.5%sensitivity and 84.8%specificity(P=0.011).CONCLUSION:Cessation or reduction of chemotherapy should be considered for patients who have an elevation of SCR levels during cisplatin combination chemotherapy.

Electrodeposited copper oxides with a suppressed interfacial amorphous phase using mixed-crystalline ITO and their enhanced photoelectrochemical performances

The effectiveness of photoelectrochemical(PEC)water splitting is significantly restricted by insufficient light harvesting,rapid charge recombination,and slow water reduction *** the presence of amorphous phases in the interfaces hinders the overcome of these inherent limitations,a photoelectrode must be built ***,we artificially controlled the crystallographic orientation of indium tin oxide(ITO)to determine the orientation with the smallest lattice mismatch at the Cu_(2)O interface,thus significantly reducing the amorphous phase in the early stage of electrodeposition ***[222]/[400]mixed orientation ITO primarily exposed the{400}surface planes and accelerated charge transfer by forming an optimal interface with preferentially grown(111)oriented Cu_(2)O and minimized amorphous *** addition,the ITO surface energy was calculated using density functional theory to theoretically verify which plane is more active for growing the photoactivation *** rationally designed ITO/Cu_(2)O/Al-dope Zn O/TiO_(2)/Rh-P device,with each layer serving a specific purpose,achieved a photocurrent density of 8.23 mA cm^(-2)at 0 VRHEunder AM 1.5 G illumination,providing a standard method for effective solar-to-hydrogen conversion photocathodes.

BACKGROUND： Thyroid hormones modulate proliferation of astrocytes and microglia depending on maturation stage and localization. Studies have demonstrated that triiodothyronine treatment or thyroidectomy during developmental stages results in morphological alterations and changes in the number of astrocytes and microglia. Little is known about the effects of hypothyroidism on astrocytes and microglia in adults. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the effects of hypothyroidism on morphology and number of astrocytes and microglia in the adult rat hippocampus. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, neuroendocrinological, animal study was performed at the College of Medicine, Hallym University, South Korea between May 2008 and April 2009. MATERIALS： Methimazole, rabbit anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） antiserum, and rabbit anti-lba-1 antiserum were purchased from Sigma, USA. Rabbit anti-GFAP polyclonal antibody was provided by Chemicon, USA. Rabbit anti-lba-1 polyclonal antibody was purchased from Wako, Japan. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP-biotin nick-end-labeling （TUNEL） kit was provided by Roche Molecular Biochemicals, Mannheim, Germany. METHODS： Hypothyroidism was induced in Wistar rats via methimazole administration （0.025%） in drinking water for 5 weeks, starting at 6 months of age. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Following methimazole treatment, hippocampai neuronal death was determined using TUNEL staining. The morphology and number of GFAP and lba-1 immunoreactive cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. Hippocampal GFAP and lba-1 protein levels were detected by Western blot analysis. Serum-free triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels were quantified. RESULTS： TUNEL-positive neurons were not observed in the hippocampus of euthyroid and hypothyroid rats. Compared with the euthyroid rats, the number of GFAP immunoreactive astrocytes was decreased, and serum triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels were significantly decreased. In contrast, the numb

Two climate factors in May that affect Korean rainfall in September

This study revealed a high positive correlation between rainfall in Korea during September and the trade wind （TW）/Arctic Oscillation （AO） index in May that combines two climate factors, low-level TWs and the AO. This correlation was identified on the basis of the difference in the 850 hPa streamline analysis between the positive and negative phases selected using the combined TW/AO index. In May, the spatial pattern of the anomalous pressure systems is similar to that in the positive AO phase. These anomalous pressure sys- tems continue in June to August （JJA） and September, but the overall spatial distribution shifts a little to the south. Particularly in September, a huge anomalous anticyclone centered over the southeast seas of Japan strengthens in most of the western north Pacific region and supplies a large volume of warm and humid air to the region near Korea. This characteristic is confirmed by the facts that during the positive TW/AO phase, the subtropical western north Pacific high （SWNPH） is more developed to the north and that the continu- ous positioning of the upper troposphere jet over Korea from May to September strengthens the anomalous upward flow, bringing warm and humid air to all layers. These factors contribute to increasing September rainfall in Korea during the positive TW/AO phase. Because the SWNPH develops more to the north in the positive phase, tropical cyclones tend to make landfall in Korea frequently, which also plays a positive role in increasing September rainfall in *** above features are also reflected by the differences in average rainfall between the six years that had the highest May Nifio 3.4 indices （El Niflo phase） and the six years that had the lowest May Niflo 3.4 indices （La Nifia phase）.
