NaF-FeF2 nanocomposite： New type of Na-ion battery cathode material

Na-ion batteries （NIBs） are considered one of the most attractive alternatives for Li-ion batteries （LIBs） because of the natural abundance of Na and the similarities between the NIB technology and the well-established LIB technology. However, the discovery of high-performance electrode materials remains a key factor in the success of NIBs. Herein, we propose a new type of cathode material for NIBs based on a nanocomposite of an alkali metal fluoride （NaF） and a transition metal fluoride （FeF2）. Although neither of these components is electrochemically active with Na, the nanoscale mixture of the two can deliver a reversible capacity of -125 mAh/g in the voltage range of 1.2--4.8 V vs. Na/Na＋ via an Fe2＋/Fe3＋ redox couple. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that the reversible Na storage is aided by the F-ions due to the decomposition of NaF, which are absorbed on the surface of FeF2, promoting the redox reaction of Fe and triggering the gradual transformation of the mother structure （FeF2） into a new （FeFB-like） host structure for the Na ions. This unique Na-ion storage phenomenon, which is reported for the first time, will introduce an avenue for designing novel cathode materials for NIBs.

Axial strain enhances osteotomy repair with a concomitant increase in connexin43 expression

The mechanical environment is known to influence fracture healing. We speculated that connexin43 （Cx43） gap junctions, which impact skeletal homeostasis, fracture healing and the osteogenic response to mechanical load, may play a role in mediating the response of the healing bone to mechanical strain. Here, we used an established rat fracture model, which uses a 2 mm osteotomy gap stabilized by an external fixator, to examine the impact of various cyclical axial loading protocols （2%, 10%, and 30% strain） on osteotomy healing. We examined the presence of Cx43 in the osteotomy-healing environment and assessed how mechanical strain modulates Cx43 expression patterns in the callus. We demonstrated that increased cyclical axial strain results in increased radiographic and histologic bone formation. In addition, we show by immunohistochemistry that Cx43 is abundantly expressed in the healing callus, with the expression most robust in samples exposed to increased cyclical axial strain. These data are consistent with the concept that an increase in Cx43 expression by mechanical load may be part of the mechanisms by which mechanical forces enhances fracture healing.

A Mathematical Model for the Deficiency-Excess Mechanism of Yin-Yang in Five Viscera

To raise traditional medicine to a higher level of scientific research, a mathematical model has been proposed using symbolic notations and operators to describe several disease symptoms generally recognized in traditional medicine. Even though this model to a certain degree offers a mathematical approach to identify the relationships between yin-yang and the five viscera, it is not an efficient means of explaining the pathology in traditional medicine due to its use of superfluous notations and definitions. In this paper, we introduce two concise operators, a self-development operator and an action operator： the former describes the effect of a viscus in the unbalanced state on other viscera： the latter explains the engendering and restraining relationships between the two viscera. These tools are useful to elucidate the interactions among the states of the five viscera based on yin-yang and the five elements theory. Our mathematical model with these two operators facilitates description for the scheme of deficiency-excess of yin-yang in the five viscera. Accordingly, we have mathematically refined the existing results and shown clinical applications as well.

Effective Task Scheduling for Embedded Systems Using Iterative Cluster Slack Optimization

To solve computationally expensive problems, multiple processor SoCs (MPSoCs) are frequently used. Mapping of applications to MPSoC architectures and scheduling of tasks are key problems in system level design of embedded systems. In this paper, a cluster slack optimization algorithm is described, in which the tasks in a cluster are simultaneously mapped and scheduled for heterogeneous MPSoC architectures. In our approach, the tasks are iteratively clustered and each cluster is optimized by using the branch and bound technique to capitalize on slack distribution. The proposed static task mapping and scheduling method is applied to pipelined data stream processing as well as for batch processing. In pipelined processing, the tradeoff between throughput and memory cost can be exploited by adjusting a weighting parameter. Furthermore, an energy-aware task mapping and scheduling algorithm based on our cluster slack optimization is developed. Experimental results show improvement in latency, throughput and energy.

Hepatic resection vs percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma abutting right diaphragm

BACKGROUND It is usually difficult to adequately conduct percutaneous ultrasound-guided radiofrequency(RF) ablation for hepatocellular carcinomas(HCCs) abutting the diaphragm. Our hypothesis was that the subphrenic location of HCC could have an effect on the long-term therapeutic outcomes after hepatic resection and RF *** To compare the long-term therapeutic outcomes of hepatic resection and percutaneous RF ablation for HCCs abutting the *** A total of 143 Child-Pugh class A patients who had undergone hepatic resection(n = 80) or percutaneous ultrasound-guided RF ablation(n = 63) for an HCC(≤ 3 cm) abutting the right diaphragm were included. Cumulative local tumor progression(LTP), cumulative intrahepatic distant recurrence(IDR), disease-free survival(DFS), and overall survival(OS) rates were estimated. Prognostic factors for DFS and OS were analyzed. Complications were *** The cumulative IDR rate, DFS rate, and OS rate for the hepatic resection group and RF ablation group at 5 years were "35.9% vs 65.8%", "64.1% vs 18.3%", and"88.4% vs 68.7%", respectively. Hepatic resection was an independent prognostic factor for DFS(P ≤ 0.001; hazard ratio, 0.352; 95%CI: 0.205, 0.605; with RF ablation as the reference category); however, treatment modality was not an independent prognostic factor for OS. The LTP rate was 46.6% at 5 years for the RF ablation group. The major complication rate was not significantly different between the groups(P = 0.630). The rate of occurrence of peritoneal seeding was higher in the RF ablation group(1.3% vs 9.5%, P = 0.044).CONCLUSION Although OS was not significantly different between patients who had gone hepatic resection or percutaneous RF ablation for HCCs abutting the diaphragm,DFS was better in the hepatic resection group.

There are many approaches to discovering significant pathways in expression profiling. Our objective is to develop a robust approach to capturing differentially expressed pathways in disease expression profiling using pathways that have a transcription factor（TF）. After collecting TF target gene, the TF target gene activity information in pathway and the pathway activity information are calculated using a t test. The p values from two analyses are integrated by the Chi-square inverse method. We evaluated our method using two cancer microarray data sets and comparing our results with those from two other pathway analysis methods. Our approach finds differentially expressed pathways that are directly associated with essential thrombocythemia, as well as general pathways that reflect cancer type-nonspecific traits and cancer type-specific pathways in breast cancer data. To test the robustness of our approach, we analyzed two lung data sets. Our approach also provides consistent and biologically reliable results. This study shows that it is better to find significant pathways in expression profiling where the TF target information is integrated within the pathway activity information. Our proposed approach is robust, and can also find cancer type-specific differentially expressed pathways.

AIM:To evaluate the long-term results of radiofrequency ablation(RFA)compared to left lateral sectionectomy(LLS)in patients with Child-Pugh class A disease for the treatment of single and small hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)in the left lateral ***:We retrospectively reviewed the data of133 patients with single HCC(≤3 cm)in their left lateral segments who underwent curative LLS(n=66)or RFA(n=67)between 2006 and ***:The median follow-up period was 33.5mo in the LLS group and 29 mo in the RFA group(P=0.060).Most patients had hepatitis B virus-related *** hospital stay was longer in the LLS group than in the RFA group(8 d vs 2 d,P<0.001).The 1-,2-,and 3-year disease-free survival and overall survival rates were 80.0%,68.2%,and 60.0%,and 95.4%,92.3%,and 92.3%,respectively,for the LLS group;and 80.8%,59.9%,and 39.6%,and 98.2%,92.0%,and 74.4%,respectively,for the RFA *** disease-free survival curve and overall survival curve were higher in the LLS group than in the RFA group(P=0.012 and P=0.013,respectively).Increased PIVKA-Ⅱlevels and small tumor size were associated with HCC recurrence in multivariate ***:Liver resection is suitable for single HCC≤3 cm in the left lateral segments.
