Amorphous silica fiber matrix biomaterials:An analysis of material synthesis and characterization for tissue engineering

silica biomaterials including Bioglass offer great biocompatibility and bioactivity but fail to provide pore and degradation features needed for tissue *** we report on the synthesis and characterization of novel amorphous silica fiber matrices to overcome these *** silica fibers were fused by sintering to produce porous *** effects of sacrificial polymer additives such as polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and cellulose fibers(CF)on the sintering process were also *** resulting matrices formed between sintering temperatures of 1,350-1,550◦C retained their fiber *** matrices presented pores in the range of 50-200μm while higher sintering temperatures resulted in increased pore *** addition to silica significantly reduced the pore diameter and porosity compared with silica matrices with or without the addition of *** PVA additive morphologically appeared to fuse the silica fibers to a greater extent and resulted in significantly higher compressive modulus and strength than the rest of the matrices *** matrices lost roughly 30%of their original mass in an in vitro degradation study over 40 *** matrices absorbed 500 wt%of water and did not change in their overall morphology,size,or shape with *** fiber matrices supported human mesenchymal stem cell adhesion,proliferation,and mineralized matrix *** silica fiber biomaterials/matrices reported here are biodegradable and porous and closely resemble the native extracellular matrix structure and water absorption *** the methodology reported here to alter matrix properties may lead to a variety of tissue engineering,implant,and drug delivery applications.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization in recurrent unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma after orthotopic liver transplantation

Aim: To investigate the survivals and efficacy of the doxorubicin drug eluting beads transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) status post orthotopic liver transplantation. Methods: Consecutive patients with HCC who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation from 2005 to 2012 were reviewed. Patients who developed recurrent HCC after orthotopic liver transplantation and received doxorubicin drug eluting beads TACE therapy were identified and included in the study. survivals were calculated from the time of 1st doxorubicin drug eluting beads TACE of recurrent HCC. Kaplan Meier estimator with log rank test was used for survival analysis. Results: Eight patients had recurrent HCC after orthotopic liver transplantation and received doxorubicin drug eluting beads TACE. The overall median survival of these patients was 15.6 months. Two patients had significantly poorer overall median survival from doxorubicin drug eluting beads TACE (3.4 months) and both showed elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein levels (> 400 ng/mL) and extra-hepatic metastases (P = 0.03). Patients with poorly differentiated HCC in explant liver had the poor median overall survival (3.6 months) compared to the patients with well-to-moderately differentiated HCC (21.7 months, P = 0.004). Conclusion:Doxorubicin drug eluting beads TACE appears to be an effective treatment option for patients with recurrent HCC after orthotopic liver transplantation.

Machine learning empowers efficient design of ternary organic solar cells with PM6 donor

Organic solar cells(OsCs) hold great potential as a photovoltaic technology for practical ***, the traditional experimental trial-and-error method for designing and engineering OsCs can be complex, expensive, and time-consuming. Machine learning(ML) techniques enable the proficient extraction of information from datasets, allowing the development of realistic models that are capable of predicting the efficacy of materials with commendable accuracy. The PM6 donor has great potential for high-performance OsCs. However, it is crucial for the rational design of a ternary blend to accurately forecast the power conversion efficiency(PCE) of ternary OsCs(TOsCs) based on a PM6 ***, we collected the device parameters of PM6-based TOsCs and evaluated the feature importance of their molecule descriptors to develop predictive models. In this study, we used five different ML algorithms for analysis and prediction. For the analysis, the classification and regression tree provided different rules, heuristics, and patterns from the heterogeneous dataset. The random forest algorithm outperforms other prediction ML algorithms in predicting the output performance of PM6-based TOsCs. Finally, we validated the ML outcomes by fabricating PM6-based TOsCs. Our study presents a rapid strategy for assessing a high PCE while elucidating the substantial influence of diverse descriptors.

Constraining the Temperature-density Relation of the Inter-galactic Medium from Analytically Modeling LyαForest Absorbers

High-mobility group box 1 was first discovered in the calf thymus as a DNA-binding nuclear protein and has been widely studied in diverse fields,including neurology and ***-mobility group box 1 in the extracellular space functions as a pro-inflammatory damage-associated molecular pattern,which has been proven to play an important role in a wide variety of central nervous system disorders such as ischemic stroke,Alzheimer’s disease,frontotemporal dementia,Parkinson’s disease,multiple sclerosis,epilepsy,and traumatic brain *** drugs that inhibit high-mobility group box 1 as a damage-associated molecular pattern,such as glycyrrhizin,ethyl pyruvate,and neutralizing anti-high-mobility group box 1 antibodies,are commonly used to target high-mobility group box 1 activity in central nervous system *** it is commonly known for its detrimental inflammatory effect,high-mobility group box 1 has also been shown to have beneficial pro-regenerative roles in central nervous system *** this narrative review,we provide a brief summary of the history of high-mobility group box 1 research and its characterization as a damage-associated molecular pattern,its downstream receptors,and intracellular signaling pathways,how high-mobility group box 1 exerts the repair-favoring roles in general and in the central nervous system,and clues on how to differentiate the pro-regenerative from the pro-inflammatory *** targeting high-mobility group box 1 in the central nervous system may benefit from differentiating between the two functions rather than overall suppression of high-mobility group box 1.
