Precise control of surface oxygen vacancies in ZnO nanoparticles for extremely high acetone sensing response

ZnO has been studied intensely for chemical sensors due to its high sensitivity and fast response.Here,we present a simple approach to precisely control oxygen vacancy contents to provide significantly enhanced acetone sensing performance of commercial ZnO nanopowders.A combination of H_(2)O_(2)treatment and thermal annealing produces optimal surface defects with oxygen vacancies on the ZnO nanoparticles(NPs).The highest response of~27,562 was achieved for 10 ppm acetone in 0.125 MH_(2)O_(2)treated/annealed ZnO NPs at the optimal working temperature of 400℃,which is significantly higher than that of reported so far in various acetone sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors(MOSs).Furthermore,first-principles calculations indicate that pre-adsorbed O formed on the surface of H_(2)O_(2)treated ZnO NPs can provide favorable adsorption energy,especially for acetone detection,due to strong bidentate bonding between carbonyl C atom of acetone molecules and pre-adsorbed O on the ZnO surface.Our study demonstrates that controlling surface oxygen vacancies by H_(2)O_(2)treatment and re-annealing at optimal temperature is an effective method to improve the sensing properties of commercial MOS materials.

Glycosylation is a process that involves the addition of sugar moieties or glycans to different types of molecules,including proteins,lipids,and nucleic acids.Among these,protein glycosylation is one of the most prevalent forms of post-translational modification,playing a crucial role in biological complexity.With more than ten monosaccharides identified within mammalian brain cells and more than 1×1012 possible combinations,the heterogeneity of glycosylation is extensive(Conroy et al.,2021).The diversity of glycans and the complexity of their structures allow for a wide range of protein functions.N-glycans are one of the most abundant forms of glycans and are involved in various cellular functions.N-glycans can be added to proteins at specific sequons,Asn-X-Ser/Thr,and are classified into three main types in mature glycoproteins:high mannose,complex,and hybrid.High mannose N-glycans consist of 5-9 mannose residues linked to a chitobiose core and undergo processing into complex or hybrid forms in the Golgi apparatus(Varki et al.,2017).Complex N-glycans are more diverse and contain various branched structures such as antennae with fucose,galactose,and sialic acid residues.Hybrid N-glycans contain one or more complex branches in conjunction with an oligomannose branch(Fisher and Ungar,2016).Understanding the specific functions of these different types of N-glycans in protein regulation,folding,and function is an active area of research in the life sciences,including glycobiology.

The diverse members of the genus Daphne are prized for their fragrant flowers.Despite being promising ornamental plants in many countries,genetic information of Daphne is scarce.In this study,the plastomes of four species and one variety of Daphne were sequenced and analyzed.The plastomes were typical and contained a pair of inverted repeat(IR)regions that separated the large single-copy(LSC)region from the small single-copy(SSC)region.With a length ranging from 132,869 bp(D.genkwa)to 174,773 bp(D.championii),106 to 141 genes were predicted.Comparative plastome analysis of the newly sequenced plastomes with four publicly available Daphne plastomes identified an expansion of the IRs,sequence variations,and mutational hotspots.Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the genus Daphne in its current circumscription is polyphyletic.Daphne genkwa was nested within the genus Wikstroemia,while D.championii was well resolved as sister to Edgeworthia.These findings concurred with results from our study that used nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequence data.The conflicts on the molecular placement of D.championii and D.genkwa and the present taxonomic classification in Daphne suggest that a new intergeneric classification system of Daphneae warrants consideration.

Novel Rifle Number Recognition Based on Improved YOLO in Military Environment

Deep neural networks perform well in image recognition,object recognition,pattern analysis,and speech recog-nition.In military applications,deep neural networks can detect equipment and recognize objects.In military equipment,it is necessary to detect and recognize rifle management,which is an important piece of equipment,using deep neural networks.There have been no previous studies on the detection of real rifle numbers using real rifle image datasets.In this study,we propose a method for detecting and recognizing rifle numbers when rifle image data are insufficient.The proposed method was designed to improve the recognition rate of a specific dataset using data fusion and transfer learningmethods.In the proposed method,real rifle images and existing digit images are fusedas trainingdata,andthe final layer is transferredto theYolov5 algorithmmodel.The detectionand recognition performance of rifle numbers was improved and analyzed using rifle image and numerical datasets.We used actual rifle image data(K-2 rifle)and numeric image datasets,as an experimental environment.TensorFlow was used as the machine learning library.Experimental results show that the proposed method maintains 84.42% accuracy,73.54% precision,81.81% recall,and 77.46% F1-score in detecting and recognizing rifle numbers.The proposed method is effective in detecting rifle numbers.

BACKGROUND Bone marrow(BM)suppression is one of the most common side effects of radiotherapy and the primary cause of death following exposure to irradiation.Despite concerted efforts,there is no definitive treatment method available.Recent studies have reported using mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs),but their therapeutic effects are contested.AIM We administered and examined the effects of various amounts of adipose-derived MSCs(ADSCs)in mice with radiation-induced BM suppression.METHODS Mice were divided into three groups:Normal control group,irradiated(RT)group,and stem cell-treated group following whole-body irradiation(WBI).Mouse ADSCs(mADSCs)were transplanted into the peritoneal cavity either once or three times at 5×10^(5) cells/200μL.The white blood cell count and the levels of,plasma cytokines,BM mRNA,and BM surface markers were compared between the three groups.Human BM-derived CD34+hematopoietic progenitor cells were co-cultured with human ADSCs(hADSCs)or incubated in the presence of hADSCs conditioned media to investigate the effect on human cells in vitro.RESULTS The survival rate of mice that received one transplant of mADSCs was higher than that of mice that received three transplants.Multiple transplantations of ADSCs delayed the repopulation of BM hematopoietic stem cells.Anti-inflammatory effects and M2 polarization by intraperitoneal ADSCs might suppress erythropoiesis and induce myelopoiesis in sub-lethally RT mice.CONCLUSION The results suggested that an optimal amount of MSCs could improve survival rates post-WBI.

Association of low muscle strength with metabolic dysfunctionassociated fatty liver disease:A nationwide study

BACKGROUND There is limited evidence regarding the association between muscle strength and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD).AIM To investigate the association between muscle strength and MAFLD in the general population in Korea.METHODS This nationwide representative cross-sectional study included 31649 individuals aged≥19 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2015 and 2018.Odds ratios(ORs)and 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)for MAFLD according to sex-specific quartiles of muscle strength,defined by relative handgrip strength,were calculated using multivariable logistic regression analysis.Additionally,multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between muscle strength and probable liver fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.RESULTS Of all the participants,29.3%had MAFLD.The prevalence of MAFLD was significantly higher in the lower muscle strength quartile groups for all participants,sexes,and age groups(P<0.001).A 1.92-fold(OR=1.92,95%CI:1.70–2.16)and 3.12-fold(OR=3.12,95%CI:2.64–3.69)higher risk of MAFLD was observed in the lowest quartile(Q1)group than in the other groups(Q2–Q4)and the highest quartile(Q4)group,respectively.The ORs of MAFLD were significantly increased in the lower muscle strength quartile groups in a dose-dependent manner(P for trend<0.001).These associations persisted in both sexes.An inverse association between muscle strength and the risk of MAFLD was observed in all subgroups according to age,obesity,and diabetes mellitus.In patients with MAFLD,the odds of severe liver fibrosis were higher in Q1(OR=1.83,95%CI:1.25–2.69)than in other groups(Q2–Q4).CONCLUSION Among Korean adults,low muscle strength was associated with an increased risk of MAFLD and liver fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.

Background Ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA),statins,and ezetimibe(EZE)have demonstrated beneficial effects against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).We investigated the efficacy of the combination of UDCA and the mix of rosuvastatin(RSV)/EZE in the treatment of NAFLD.Methods NAFLD mouse models were developed by injecting thioacetamide,fasting,and high-carbohydrate refeeding,highfat diet,and choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined high-fat diet(CDAHFD).Low-dose UDCA(L-UDCA;15 mg/kg)or highdose UDCA(H-UDCA;30 mg/kg)was administered with RSV/EZE.We also employed an in vitro model of NAFLD developed using palmitic acid-treated Hepa1c1c7 cells.Results Co-administration of RSV/EZE with UDCA significantly decreased the collagen accumulation,serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT)levels,and mRNA levels of fibrosis-related markers than those observed in the vehicle group in thioacetamide-treated mice(all P<0.01).In addition,in the group fasted and refed with a high-carbohydrate diet,UDCA/RSV/EZE treatment decreased the number of apoptotic cells and serum ALT levels compared with those observed in the vehicle group(all P<0.05).Subsequently,H-UDCA/RSV/EZE treatment decreased the number of ballooned hepatocytes and stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1(SCD-1)mRNA levels(P=0.027)in the liver of high-fat diet-fed mice compared with those observed in the vehicle group.In the CDAHFD-fed mouse model,UDCA/RSV/EZE significantly attenuated collagen accumulation and fibrosis-related markers compared to those observed in the vehicle group(all P<0.05).In addition,UDCA/RSV/EZE treatment significantly restored cell survival and decreased the protein levels of apoptosis-related markers compared to RSV/EZE treatment in palmitic acid-treated Hepa1c1c7 cells(all P<0.05).Conclusion Combination therapy involving UDCA and RSV/EZE may be a novel strategy for potent inhibition of NAFLD progression.

Enhancing Identity Protection in Metaverse-Based Psychological Counseling System

Non-face-to-face psychological counseling systems rely on network technologies to anonymize information regard-ing client identity.However,these systems often face challenges concerning voice data leaks and the suboptimal communication of the client’s non-verbal expressions,such as facial cues,to the counselor.This study proposes a metaverse-based psychological counseling system designed to enhance client identity protection while ensuring efficient information delivery to counselors during non-face-to-face counseling.The proposed systemincorporates a voicemodulation function that instantlymodifies/masks the client’s voice to safeguard their identity.Additionally,it employs real-time client facial expression recognition using an ensemble of decision trees to mirror the client’s non-verbal expressions through their avatar in the metaverse environment.The system is adaptable for use on personal computers and smartphones,offering users the flexibility to access metaverse-based psychological counseling across diverse environments.The performance evaluation of the proposed system confirmed that the voice modulation and real-time facial expression replication consistently achieve an average speed of 48.32 frames per second or higher,even when tested on the least powerful smartphone configurations.Moreover,a total of 550 actual psychological counseling sessions were conducted,and the average satisfaction rating reached 4.46 on a 5-point scale.This indicates that clients experienced improved identity protection compared to conventional non-face-to-face metaverse counseling approaches.Additionally,the counselor successfully addressed the challenge of conveying non-verbal cues from clients who typically struggled with non-face-to-face psychological counseling.The proposed systemholds significant potential for applications in interactive discussions and educational activities in the metaverse.

为了设计一种有效且适用于功率器件的烧结结合工艺,提出一种两步工艺,使用约200 nm的铜颗粒基浆料形成具有高温可持续性和优越导热性的粘结层。该工艺涉及在空气中快速压力辅助烧结和在氮气气氛中连续无压退火。当使用20%(质量分数)的羟基丁二酸和80%(质量分数)的乙二醇混合物浆料时,在300°C、5 MPa烧结30 s后的剪切强度为23.1 MPa。辅助无压烧结30 min后,剪切强度显著提高至69.6 MPa。因此,两步烧结结合工艺有望作为下一代烧结结合工艺具有极高的生产效率。
